Senior Constable Bombay said he has always liked the east side of the city and there are good people in New Brighton, which is why he has stayed there so long. “Why do Garry Bombay people keep the same old cars? It is what you are comfortable with. You know the issues, you know the people, you make your contacts, it is good,” he said. But Senior Constable Bombay doesn’t think much has changed in the suburb since he first started out. “Same crime, different time, is what I say . . . every area has its own characters who come to your attention on a regular basis. New Brighton has their share but they are good people at heart,” he said. CHALLENGING: Senior Constable Garry Bombay’s career has included the 1981 Springbok tour and searching for murdered Ashburton teenager Kirsty Bentley. He said the most important part of his role is to “treat others how you would like to be treated.” “It doesn’t matter if they are on the other side of the law or not,” he said. After 41 years in the police, Senior Constable Bombay has seen significant events. He had been in the job four years when he worked in crowd control as part of the 1981 Springbok tour – where New Zealand police were armed with batons and helmets for the first time in the country’s history to control protesters. “I don’t really hold any strong political views myself. I had to do what my job was and uphold the law as directed at the time . . . you protected the supporters of the tour as well as the protesters,” Senior Constable Bombay said. He said he did not think there would be anywhere else in the world where the country’s whole police got together and worked as one. “We were just transported from one part of the country to the next for every sort of protest that was going on . . . it was quite an experience for a young policeman in those days.” THe February 22, 2011, earthquake “was a big moment’’ for Senior Constable Bombay. He had to deal with his own home in Dallington destroyed, and the grim police work that followed the deadly quake. For three months following the earthquake he was involved in body recovery and victim identification. “It was a big moment in our lives . . . but that is part of our job, you get conditioned to that over the years,” he said. Not only has Senior Constable Bombay worked in community policing, about a year ago he retired from his role of a logistics manager for the police’s search and rescue squad. He was involved in the squad for about 30 years and assisted the CIB on homicides including searching for murdered Ashburton teenager Kirsty Bentley. Senior Constable Bombay said although it has been a high demanding job, there has been some cases where people have gone missing and been found alive and well. “THat is always a great success story,” he said. Senior Constable Bombay has also used his role in the police to help the wider community. In 2009, he arranged for New Brighton police to cycle from the West Coast to the city to help the former Central New Brighton School raise about $15,000 to keep its swimming pool open. “THat made the pool very financial, they had money to spare but then the earthquake came along and kicked us in the guts. It is gone now,” he said. PEGASUS POST Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday October 9 2018 7 News Woolston Fire Station opened THE NEW Woolston Fire Station has been officially opened, it is the third of six stations to be rebuilt. Fire and Emergency chairman Paul Swain, who opened the station, said the February 22, 2011, earthquake devastated the city’s fire stations. “This modern station is another step in redeveloping the metropolitan city’s entire network of fire stations.” The new Woolston station was built on the site of the former station at a total cost of $6.9 million. More than 900 piles were driven in to strengthen the site, which is 1.2m higher than it was before. It features two appliance bays, six single bedrooms, a gym, kitchen and lounge and purpose-built dirty-to-clean zones. There, firefighters could bag smoke-contaminated gear in a negative pressure environment before showering to prevent carcinogen transfer into clean living and work areas. The station also has a vehicle fume management system, a hose that connects to vehicle exhausts, so the appliance bay would not fill with fumes from appliances coming and going. The Woolston crew moved back to the station in mid-June, before work was completed. Local News Now Fire rages, homes at risk Help out a penguin on Southshore • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding SOUTHSHORE families will come together to build new nests for penguins. The Southshore Residents’ Association is organising the event on October 20, which aims to teach families about penguin habitats in the area. Last week the Coastal-Burwood Community Board granted $1000 from its discretionary response fund to go towards the project. The building of the nests will be led by city council coastal rangers, while New Brighton Menz Shed members will pre-cut the wood. Residents’ association chairwoman Lynda Burdekin hopes it will encourage more penguins to nest in the area. The event will be held from 10am-2pm at the South Brighton Community Centre on Beatty St and will include a community picnic. Older children will be involved in building the nesting boxes, while there will be a range of penguin-focused activities for younger children. JOIN US NOW!
