Canty stars train with Harewood School pupils Young road CBHS take out team time trial CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High upset their rivals to claim the prestigious Sir Bernard Fegusson Trophy at the New Zealand road cycling championships. The CBHS team took out the trophy by winning the under 20 national time trial at Loburn. The 51st edition of the championships drew 601 riders from 100 schools over the threeday competition, which finished last Monday. As well as the team time trial, it included road and points races. It was the first time the event has been staged in the South Island. CBHS’s Laurence Pithie, Griffyn Spencer, Josh Rivett, Logan Currie and Guy Yarrell crossed the finish line 11sec ahead of Palmerston North Boys’ High School, with defending champions Auckland Grammar School in third. CBHS teacher and team manager Gary McNaughton said the team were motivated to do well in their home region. “We went out and rode the course two weeks ago and felt confident we could do well. The guys have given it everything in their last few training sessions,” he said. “We have a few guys peaking for this as their final preparation before representing New Zealand at the Oceania track championships in Adelaide in a couple of weeks time.” • By Ashleigh Monk YOUNG RUGBY fans got the chance to meet some Canterbury rugby players. Chris King, Phil Burleigh and Hamish Dalzell met and practiced with the pupils from Harewood School. The players greeted the pupils for a chat and answered their questions before putting them through some training drills and having a game. Burleigh said it was nice to spend time with the young fans. “It was great to meet the next generation of enthusiastic young rugby players, to run through some skills training with them, and answer questions they have about what we do,” Burleigh said. “This group was really engaged and keen to learn, so we enjoyed taking the time out to connect with them. I hope the knowledge we passed on will help them get the most out of their rugby in the future.” The players put the boys through some training drills, finishing with a mock game in which three boys were each put into a team with a Canterbury player, while the third player was the referee. NOR’WEST NEWS Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday October 9 2018 17 cyclists claim national titles Papanui rider wins his age group • By Jacob Page RYAN MACLEOD pedalled past his rivals to win the under-16 boys title at the national road cycling championships at Loburn last week. The talented 15-year-old from Papanui High School made four attack attempts before finally securing the break he needed to go on and win the event. “It didn’t bother me that I came back to the pack so often,” he said. “The first time I just wanted to see what would happen and who Ryan Macleod would come with me if I made a break.” His time of 52min 53sec was more than 1sec clear of Westlake Boys’ High School’s Marcus Bycroft. “I’d ridden the track a few times in the week before the race just to see where the best places to attack were and it worked out,” he said. He splits his time between mountain biking, the track and road cycling. He will compete at the South Island mountain bike championships in Dunedin, which start on Friday, before embarking on his summer track campaign based at Denton Park. Ryan’s coach Hamish Ferguson described him as “an incredibly motivated kid”. Ryan has won medals on the track for Canterbury and continues to excel across the three disciplines. “We took Ryan away to track nationals last year as a bit of development experiment, and he did so well that he ended up being in the Canterbury A team pursuit and winning golf there,” Ferguson said. “For someone who only took up track cycling last year, he’s produced some great results,” Ryan said he loved all three disciplines but one day would like to race professionally overseas and compete on some of the big European tours. Rangi student comes out on top of under-16 event • By Jacob Page RANGI RURU cyclist Charlotte Spurway’s one-time weakness has turned into a national titlewinning strength. The 15-year-old, who lives in Fendalton, won the under-16 girls title at the national road cycling championships. She has competed in triathlons regularly but when she was out injured two years ago her focus changed. “Out of the swim, bike and run the bike was always my weakest area, but when I was injured, that was the only thing I could do regularly.” Charlotte said she was thrilled to claim her first national title in a sprint finish. She won in a time of 1hr 21sec with a sprint finish at the end of the 35km race. “I’d had a few training rides on it leading up to the race and because it was so flat, I knew that creating a breakaway would be tough so I just gave it everything I had in that final sprint.” Charlotte went away with the New Zealand under-17 road team to Adelaide in April for the Australian nationals in a WINNER: Charlotte Spurway won the under-16 title at the national road cycling championships. She also hopes to continue competing in triathlons over summer, as well as take a more active role in track cycling. “I think the road cycling has started to gain more of my focus though,” she said. “I don’t have any big goals, I just want to see how far I can go.”
