Timeline to resolve District Plan issues • By Matt Salmons A RESOLUTION to the issues Redcliffs residents are facing with building or renovating could possibly be found in time for Christmas. Residents’ groups and community boards had sought to get an enabling clause added to the District Plan since 2016. The money has been moved from the balance of funding for safety improvements from the Buckleys Rd, Linwood Ave and Aldwins Rd intersection following the release of the Linwood- Eastgate Area Integrated Transport Study. City councillor Sara Templeton said people heading Yani Johanson through the bus stop “deserve better” than its current state when the plan was approved during Thursday’s council meeting. “For many years we have heard from the Linwood community that the bus facilities on Buckleys Rd are not appropriate. It is the third busiest suburban bus interchange in the city.” However, Peter Jasper told the city council residents along the stretch of Buckleys Rd near the bus stop found accessing to their properties difficult due to frequency of buses. “It would be irresponsible to spend ratepayer money on more,” he said. Mr Jasper said putting in a de facto bus hub lacked “any shred of commonsense and common decency” towards home owners and residents. The bus stops in front of Eastgate cater up to 30 buses per hour and board up to 1500 passengers per day, rivalling Northlands Shopping Centre. Linwood Ward city councillor Yani Johanson also questioned whether taking the funding from the intersection safety improvement was the right thing to do. “The issue here is that we are robbing a safety intersection improvement that we publicly consulted on during out LTP to pay for a public transport hub where there is still not a clear idea about what that public transport hub will look like.” However, city council staff said the safety improvements had been completed and the $1.1 million was leftover. Cr Johanson would not support moving the funding without public consultation or before Environment SAFETY: $1.1 million has been set aside for a new bus hub outside Eastgate Mall. •From page 1 Canterbury’s Regional Public Transport Plan had been released as it could impact the Eastgate area. Staff said there was work that could be done that “would not be undone” following the plan’s release and other construction would not be done before the plan was finalised. “There is still a need for the pedestrian crossing and other safety measures to be undertaken like tactiles, etc.” First on the upgrade schedule is a signalised crossing between bus stops on Buckleys Rd, staff said. The weeds were then removed by a mechanical harvester six weeks after the spraying. The free Take a Kid Fishing event will be held from 9am on Sunday. Skilled anglers from fishing clubs will be there to help at all four lakes. One lake is reserved for children eight years, where an expert angler will assist for a limited time, tackle supplied.
