Similarly, if you’re truly looking to have art make an impact, select pieces that can stand proudly upfront in your living areas. If it’s shunted to the corners, the impact of any piece is often lost. Sculpture has a different set of requirements. If you have a lot of knick-knacks in your home, the impact of a sculpture can be diminished. You should display your large, single pieces on a pedestal or elevated surface, and savvy art people often use a mirror behind the piece to provide depth and dimension. Whatever you do, don’t place delicate pieces in heavy traffi c areas. Great art needs to be preserved, and accidents happen even to those with the best of intentions. –continued from page 21 You don’t need ridiculously high walls or whitespace for paintings or other collages. Colors, patterns and even exposed brick can serve as a backdrop to your art. Do keep your wall in mind when selecting what to hang - the wall should amplify the art, not compete with it. Just as you wouldn’t wear plaid on plaid, so, too, should you consider the contrasts when you’re creating your vision. Art should also complement your living space. If you live in HANG ‘EM HIGH Don’t make your art placement decisions based on where the wall studs are located. While those do provide a strong surface for hanging, you can also use anchor bolts to secure the work, easily found at most bigger hardware stores. All pieces should be at eye level of a person who standing height is about fi ve feet, 8 inches (note - the average male American), no matter the size of the piece. The key is to be able to drink in the art without having to look up at it. And please, please, please - keep your artwork away from direct sunlight, which can cause it to fade.
