Longtime Glenview resident hopes to notch world record
Chris Pullam
Freelance Reporter
Glenview is no stranger
to fame.
Over the years, the Chicago
suburb has produced
household names like Patrick
Stump and Emily Bergl
and cultural icons like
Helen Brach and Robert
Kennicott, but it has never
graced the pages of the
Guinness Book of World
Records.
Until now – possibly.
The village may finally
claim that mantle courtesy
of 99-year-old John Lawrence
“Larry” Donoghue, a
64-year Glenview resident
vying for the title of “Oldest
Person to Receive Porcelain
Veneers.”
Dr. Earl Schneider, of
Schneider Dental Associates,
1775 Glenview Road,
performed the procedure
free of charge in order to
set the record, while helping
his longtime client fix a few
chipped teeth. Schneider
has since submitted Donoghue
for consideration, but
he doesn’t expect to hear
back for a few more weeks.
“I would have to say I
am very pleased with [the
porcelain veneers],” Donoghue
said. “He gave me a
plaque that says ‘World’s
Best Smile,’ and I would
have to say it’s a very handsome
smile.
“I told him I’ve been
walking up and down Central
Street (in Evanston)
with the sign hanging from
my shoulders and that he’s
going to have to give me
a thousand of his business
cards because everyone
wants one.”
Even if Donoghue
doesn’t make the record
book, he’s still lived a life
worth celebrating.
The Chicago native graduated
from Loyola Academy
in 1937, back when
the high school was still
adjacent to Loyola University,
and then studied civil
engineering at the Illinois
Institute of Technology.
In December 1942, as
BLOOMINGDALE ELMHURST
a 23-year-old only a few
months removed from college,
he joined the Navy for
four years, serving on an
aircraft carrier in the Pacific
Ocean during World War
II before retiring as captain
of a fighter squadron.
After returning to civilian
life, Donoghue worked
for engineering firm Ralph
H. Burke Associates, which
was responsible for almost
all of the planning and early
construction of O’Hare
International Airport.
After Ralph Burke died
in 1956, Donoghue took
over the practice until
1994, when his wife, Colleen,
asked when they’d
be able to spend more time
together.
“My wife got to me,” he
said. “So I spent a couple
weeks thinking about that.
At the time, I was working
60 hours a week and was on
the road 60 percent of the
time, and I ended up cutting
it back to 35 hours a week
with less time on the road
with my private practice.”
From 1994 until 2016,
the now-99 year old
worked “only” 35 hours
each week as a parking
consultant, traveling across
the United States and Canada
to show municipalities
