44 | October 11, 2018 | The glenview lantern sports glenviewlantern.com Football Glenbrook South falls to Maine South in two-day game Casey Bannon Freelance Reporter More than 16 hours after kickoff in Glenbrook South’s game against Maine South, the Titans dropped their fifth game of the season Saturday, Oct. 6. After shutting out GBS 24-0 in Friday night’s first half, Maine South extended its lead Saturday morning, coming out on top 44-7. A coin toss on the Titan’s lightning bolt at midfield started the game on Friday night, and a lightning bolt in the sky ended it. GBS (2-5) struggled to keep pace with a highpowered Maine South (6- 1) offense during the first half, as the Titans trailed 24-0 going into the break before severe storms postponed the remainder of the game. Despite maintaining a decent completion percentage through the elements, senior South quarterback Evan Whetstone struggled to move the ball against the Hawks’ defense during both halves, completing 6-of-11 passes for 72 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Senior running back Jack Jerfita found similar results against Maine South’s front seven — managing 27 yards on nine carries in the first half and 18 yards on nine carries in the second half. “That front seven is hard to replicate in practice, that’s the hardest part of it,” Glenbrook South head coach Dave Schoenwetter said. “If you can’t run the ball, it’s really hard to pass the ball — for us.” Maine South versus Glenbrook South 1 2 3 4 F Maine South 10 14 13 7 44 GBS 0 0 0 7 7 Top Performers 1. With 12 seconds left in the first quarter, senior defensive end Ryan O’Hara shrugged off a blocker and soared in the air to intercept a quick screen from Maine South quarterback Bobby Inserra. It was only Inserra’s third play from scrimmage since going down with an injury in Week 2. After a Titans turnover on downs, Maine South starting quarterback Cole Dow threw a dart down the left side that bounced straight up off the facemask of his unassuming target Michael Velazquez and into the hands of Titans’ cornerback Jacob Wolf. “I was really happy with what the defense did,” Schoenwetter said. “I know we gave up a deep throw towards the end of the half, but we stopped them multiple times and forced them to kick a field goal. So I felt bad our offense didn’t take advantage of it. “ As the Titans failed to convert either turnover into points, the Hawks found some running room. With 4:51 to go in the half, Daniel Wolf bounced an inside handoff to the outside and tight-roped down the right sideline for an 82-yard touchdown. He would finish the first half with four carries for 105 yards and two scores, before tacking on another 29 yards in Saturday’s second half. After a GBS interception on the following drive, Dow pumped right and threw down the left seam to a wideopen Ryan Kilburg for a 35-yard touchdown. The two-play, 55-yard drive took only 14 seconds off the clock and sent the Hawks into the locker room with a comfortable 24-point lead. As the teams came back out for the second half, the heavy rain and lightning began. Players and fans were asked to leave the stadium well before the official announcement was made just before 10 p.m. Both teams came into Friday night tied atop the Central Suburban League South at 2-0, and despite the early wake-up call on Saturday, Schoenwetter said he was still looking forward to the battle. “I mean, how often do you get to make midgame adjustments while watching film and doing all that?“ he said. “Yeah, I’m excited to come back and play the second half. That’s for sure.” The one-sided nature of the game continued Saturday morning after halftime, though Glenbrook South kept the game closer in the second half than the night before. Glenbrook South finished the game with 77 rushing yards from 44 attempts, while Maine South posted 300 rushing yards from 27 attempts, including four rushing touchdowns. Maine South also outgained Glenbrook South through the air, with Inserra and two others combining to complete 10 of 20 passes for a total of 174 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Not only have the Trevians beaten every team in Illinois, they’ve done so relatively easily. They looked to continue that streak when they faced off with Glenbrook South on Oct. 2 in Northfield. The Titans looked to pick up their 13th win when they faced off in a Central Suburban League battle. Like all of their previous in-state games, however, the Trevians came out on top, picking up a 6-0 win.
