East Maine District 63 Board of Education
BYU grad appointed to fill vacant seat
Submitted by District 63
The East Maine School
District 63 Board of Education
appointed Katie Anderson,
of Morton Grove,
to the board at its meeting
Oct. 4.
Anderson will fill the
seat left vacant by former
board member Angelo
Scarsella, who stepped
down in August. The appointment
runs through
April 2019, when the seat
will be filled through local
elections.
Anderson, a district resident
since 2015, has three
children — one who attends
the district’s Melzer
School. An active volunteer
at her church and a
past American Youth Soccer
Organization board
member, Anderson holds
Bachelor’s degrees in English
and marriage, family,
and human development
from Brigham Young University.
“We received applications
from four highlyqualified
candidates to
fill this vacancy,” Board
President
Alexandra Brook said.
“Each possessed unique
assets that would serve our
school community well.
It was a difficult decision.
After a great deal of discussion,
the board chose
to appoint Ms. Anderson.
Her passion for children’s
literacy and providing an
equitable education to all
D63 students resonated
deeply with us.”
“I’m truly honored and
excited to serve on the
D63 Board,” Anderson
said. “As the mother of a
district student, I’ve been
impressed with the enriched
educational experience
our schools offer —
and the way they celebrate
inclusiveness, family and
community participation,
and diversity. I look forward
to supporting the
district’s focus on student
success and on the growth
and development of every
child’s mind and future.”
East Maine School District
63 offers a rich learning
environment and multicultural
perspective to
more than
3,400 students in the
diverse communities of
Glenview, Des Plaines,
Niles, Park Ridge and
Morton Grove.
Committed to teaching
excellence that provides
all students with the specific
opportunities they
need to succeed and thrive,
District 63’s six elementary
schools (K-6), and
Gemini Junior High (7-8),
preschool, and
afterschool programs
foster each student’s academic,
social, emotional
and behavioral growth and
achievement. Visit www.
