12 | selwyn gardening guide spring 2018 Organic bin tips To ensure your organics wheelie bin is fully emptied every time: Time for a spring clean Keep the bin weight reasonable. If you find it difficult to move the bin, then you may find it exceeds the truck lifting limits and could be left behind unemptied. Keep organic bin contents loose. Don’t compact your material by standing on it (it may not come out when tipped by the truck). Place weeds, branchy material or newspaper at the bottom of the bin before filling with grass clippings. This reduces the likelihood of the grass clippings getting stuck. Organics only! Absolutely NO plastic bags! No metals, glass, rocks or stones, bricks or rubbish please. These cause considerable damage to the organics shredder. Put flax and cabbage leaves in your rubbish. Make sure your bin is not over full – the lid must close. With spring arriving, it’s time to get out in the garden and tidy up the yard. Residents are already taking advantage of the warmer weather, filling their organic bins more regularly and with some of them even being over the weight restriction of 60kg – that’s a lot of garden waste! Organic bin services are available in Darfield, Kirwee, West Melton, Rolleston, Prebbleton, Lincoln, Springston, Leeston and Southbridge. You can request an organics bin by contacting the Council via our website or by calling us on, 347 2800. With the rapid growth of Selwyn over the past few years we have so many new residents in our communities. Many who are new to the district aren’t aware of the services the Council offers, in particular the Pines Resource Recovery Park located just two minutes South of Rolleston. The Recovery Park is the district’s main drop-off point for garden waste, rubbish, cleanfill and a wide range of recyclables including electronic waste and household hazardous waste. Most recyclables are free to drop off at the Recovery Park. Small fees apply for items like TVs and tyres. Friendly staff are on-site to answer any questions and will point you in the right direction. The Pines Resource Recovery Park is located at 183 Burnham School Road. It’s open seven days a week. For communities further away, Community Recycling Drop-off days are being held in Darfield and Ellesmere shortly. You can drop off garden waste, tyres, child car seats and electronic waste for a small charge, and scrap metal free of charge.
