A retired farmer, Mr Moore 

has lived in the Halswell area 

since 1978. 

Mr Moore helped transform 

the Halswell Quarry into the 

park that it is today throughout

over a controversial Fulton 

Hogan quarry near Templeton 

has been labelled a publicity 

stunt. 

People living close to the proposed 

170ha say they have heard 

little from the company. 

Fulton Hogan says it regularly 

consults with businesses, 

neighbours and residents since 

forming a seven-member 

community advisory group in 

May. 

A member of the advisory 

group told a quarry neighbour it 

met fortnightly for eight sessions, 

but has stopped meeting since 

August 30. 

But a Fulton Hogan 

spokeswoman says it has other 

forms of consultation, such as 

an information centre at the 

proposed quarry site at Curraghs, 

Dawsons, Jones and Maddisons

about one of life’s battlers. 

Cameron Young has struggled with 

Crohn’s Disease for years but that hasn’t 

stopped from having the courage – and 

presumably fitness – to take on a very, very tough endurance 

race – the Coast to Coast. 

Cameron will do the bike leg of the event in a team that 

comprises some mates and colleagues. 

And the bike leg won’t be easy. When you ride towards 

Christchurch there is usually one big obstacle in your way: The 

easterly wind. 

On page 5 residents are arching up over a pool hall wanting a 

liquor licence. But what kind of a pool hall would it be without a 

liquor licence?

Growth puts pressure on advice bureau 


A COMMUNITY service group 

in Hornby says it’s increasingly 

under pressure due to a 

population boom. 

The Citizen’s Advice Bureau 

Christchurch area manager 

Mollie Howarth wants more 

volunteers and donations to cope 

with demand. 

The bureau is a voluntary 

group providing free legal, 

justice of the peace and social 

services. 

The demand for services at 

the Hornby branch is being 

fuelled by more people moving 

to Wigram and Rolleston, Mrs 

Howarth said. 

She said the population 

growth in the area started after 

the September 2010 and February 

2011 earthquakes. 

“It’s perhaps because there’s 

the perceived psychological feeling 

of [the west] being the safer 

side of town,” Mrs Howarth said. 

“A lot of people from Selwyn 

are stopping off in Hornby, 

working in Hornby, doing their 

groceries, and I’m primarily 

talking about Rolleston,” she 

said. 

The Selwyn District Council 

estimated Rolleston’s population 

to be at about 13,000 in 2016, an 

increase from 9500 in 2013. 

Out of 8811 clients contacted 

by the branch in the 2017/18 

financial year, 10 per cent are 

from Selwyn. 

Most of the demand is for Justice 

of the Peace services, which 

made up 2346 clients in 2017/18. 

The clients are dealt with by 

52 volunteers in the Hornby 

branch. 

But there are not enough volunteers 

to open a new branch in 

Selwyn, Mrs Howarth said. 

It also needed more donations 

to meet the increased population 

growth. 

Volunteers often have to get 

clients to open up about their 

issues, she said. 

“For example we might get a 

phone call from someone saying 

‘I need a food parcel,” Mrs Howarth 

said. 

“So our volunteers will ask 

why. Some people might say 

they’ve been drinking heavily 

after breaking up with their girlfriend 

and spent all their money 

on alcohol.”

“That is one aspect of what we 

do,” Mrs Howarth said. 

“We’ll be looking for more 

volunteers in March next year, so 

there will be opportunities.” 

There are currently no advice 

bureaus in the Selwyn District. 

Mrs Howarth says with more 

funding, that could be possible.

Harry’s Story 

Harry Taylor is a Masters of Management graduate, who 

studied changes in workplaces and societies around the 

globe. ”When I realised the dominating role tech plays in 

these changes, I knew I had to be a part of the future.

Information Technology behind her, Sakinah decided

“During my project I completed business analysis to 

help the team at Orbica select the right solution for 

their Agile Management. I also helped to automate 

some office processes to improve their workflow, and 

worked alongside the software development team on 

Orbica’s new product, making it ready for production 

by testing, diagnosing and fixing bugs”. Sakinah is 

now enjoying her new role as a full stack developer 

at Orbica, a fast growing tech company specialising 

in location data to create effective business solutions.

“We certainly haven’t heard 

anything from the community 

advisory group,” she said. 

“If there have been any discussions, 

they have been very secretive 

about it.” 

Mrs Curtin said her family’s 

55-year horse training business 

will be lost because quarry 

trucks will pose a danger to the 

horses which race on a track 

next to Dawsons Rd. 

The Weedons Residents’ Association 

is part of the advisory 

group, but the Templeton Residents’ 

Association declined to 

join, Mr Stewart said. 

Weedons Residents’ Association 

secretary Gary Doyle said 

Fulton Hogan left many questions 

unanswered. 

“They were not exactly the 

most forthcoming. They have 

not put up any details that are 

concrete,” Mr Doyle said. 

“But until they make the 

[resource consent] application, 

there’s not much anyone can do.” 

Templeton Residents’ Association 

chairman Garry Kilday said 

Fulton Hogan wanted to meet 

the six-member No Quarry 

sub-committee, not the wider 

community. 

“The reason we declined to 

attend was we didn’t believe the 

sub-committee could speak for 

2500 Templeton residents. 

“If [Fulton Hogan] inform the 

community as a group about 

what’s going on, we will look at 

it,” Mr Kilday said. 

Curraghs Rd resident Simon 

Moore had not heard from the 

advisory group either. 

“I’m half a kilometre away 

and they certainly haven’t 

[contacted] me, none of my 

neighbours have been contacted 

either.” 


RICCARTON RESIDENTS are 

trying to sink a pool hall’s bid to 

get a liquor licence. 

The Common Room on Riccarton 

Rd has applied to sell alcohol 

at the premises from 8-2am daily. 

Residents nearby believe this 

could cause a return to anti-social 

behaviour that marred the Riccarton 

bus lounges. 

The pool hall is located opposite 

the eastbound Riccarton Rd 

bus lounge and about 50m from 

the westbound bus lounge. 

The Common Room is owned 

by fast-food restaurant Arcadia 

owner Matthew Glanville. 

It was previously known as 

More Pool. 

Mr Glanville could not be 

reached for comment. 

Riccarton Bush-Kilmarnock 

Residents’ Association chairman 

Tony Simons said the residents 

are against the proposed hours. 

The residents submitted their 

objection to the city council’s 

district licencing committee. 

“The bus lounges and Division 

St are previously known trouble 

spots and the flow on effect of 

delinquent behaviour has been 

felt by the surrounding businesses 

and residential areas,” the

Aaron Thorn did not believe 

the new license will increase 

drunken behaviour. 

“You’ve got liquor agencies 

around that immediate areas, so 

I don’t know if one more is really 

going to terribly make a much of 

difference,” Constable Thorn said. 

The behaviour at the bus lounges 

has also improved. Should 

drunken behaviour increase, 

police will intervene, Constable 

Thorn said. 

Ms Broughton expects a 

licencing committee decision in 

the next two to three weeks.

It’s been a week of mixed emotions for the team here at 

Ravensdown. 

Disappointed a fire occurred last Tuesday. Thankful nobody was 

hurt. Grateful to the Fire Service. 

Proud of the team for bouncing back. Committed to rebuild, 

listen and improve. 

We are sorry and apologise to the residents of our wonderful 

city for the inconvenience and concern the fire caused. 

Our Hornby site has been part of the Christchurch community 

for nearly 100 years. We take our role and responsibilities 

seriously and front up when things go wrong. This experience 

has made us more determined than ever to do the region proud. 

We’ll be looking closely at the causes of the fire. At the moment, 

we believe a rubber conveyor belt caused it to spread to 

fibreglass roofs of four of our 13 buildings. This resulted in the 

extensive black smoke that could be seen for some distance. 

The fire involved building materials only - no fertiliser was 

combusting. In fact, we don’t store nitrate or other 

“explosive-risk” fertilisers at any of our manufacturing plants. 

The team here pulled out all the stops and within 48 hours; we 

were again open for business. Food-creating nutrients were able 

to be picked up by farmers for the busy spring season.

Hornby’s Cameron Young 

has had Crohn’s disease 

for the past 25 years. 

To raise awareness of 

the inflammatory bowel 

disease, he is taking part 

in the Coast to Coast next 

year. Anan Zaki reports 

TWENTY-FIVE years ago, 

Cameron Young had a stomach 

ache. 

A teenager at the time, he 

didn’t think much of it and 

brushed it off as just another bug 

or the result of a poor diet. 

But he spent the next decade in 

and out of hospital, searching for 

answers to what was wrong with 

him. 

He was in pain and suffering 

long-term diarrhoea. 

“I was in and out of hospital 

for years on end. I had to take so 

much time off work,” Mr Young 

said. 

Ten years after his first stomach 

pain, doctors diagnosed him 

with Crohn’s disease. 

It is an inflammatory bowel 

disease, where the body attacks 

the digestive system. 

Mr Young didn’t contract the 

disease off anyone or anything. 

AWARENESS: Hornby’s Cameron Young will attempt to cycle in the Coast to Coast next year to 

raise awareness of Crohn’s disease.

He was just unlucky that he had 

the genes. 

Prior to developing Crohn’s, he 

was constantly active. He played 

football, cycled and played tennis 

regularly. 

But that all stopped once the 

disease took complete control of 

him. He had to quit his job as a 

security guard. 

“When it hit me real bad about 

five years ago, I had to give up 

work,” Mr Young said. 

“I was in constant pain, I was 

lying down all the time.” 

His employers also accused 

him of faking the illness, as on 

the outside, he looked healthy. 

“I lost three jobs because of it, 

they didn’t think it was real,” Mr 

Young said.

“I looked normal on the 

outside, everything was inside.” 

He tried getting compensation 

from one of the security firms, 

but they went bankrupt. 

“The other firms, I just decided 

it wasn’t worth the effort getting 

compensation. They didn’t 

understand what I was going 

through,” Mr Young said. 

The constant sickness took a 

major toll on Mr Young’s mental 

health. He soon spiralled down 

to “rock bottom”. 

“Being constantly in pain, not 

able to do things, not able to be 

with my kids, pick them up or 

anything like that affected me,” 

he said. 

“My wife is the one who helped 

me by telling me that I had to 

go see someone and I ended up 

seeing a counsellor.” 

Anger management was 

something he had to try hard to 

work on. 

“I was snapping it everything 

– my wife, my kids. I’ll snap at 

anyone. That’s what we want 

people not to do.” 

The affect of the disease on 

a person’s mental health is one 

message Mr Young wants to get 

out.

Hornby man’s race 

to raise awareness 


“We want people to reach out,” 

Mr Young said. 

As newer treatments, such as the 

injection Humira, became more 

available, Mr Young’s condition 

improved. 

He started taking the medication 

three years ago. 

“I call it the wonder drug. Before 

I started taking it, I couldn’t even 

lift up my kids or go outside and 

play with them, now I can,” Mr 

Young said. 

He is now in remission and his 

goal is to spread awareness about 

Crohn’s disease. 

To do that, he will take part in 

next year’s Coast to Coast and raise 

funds for Crohn’s, and Colitis New 

Zealand, a charitable trust which 

aims to provide support, advice, 

resources and information about 

Crohn’s. 

Mr Young decided to take on 

the Coast to Coast in March after 

being encouraged by a close friend, 

Tim Limmer. 

“I’ve always wanted to do it, and 

because I’m on Humira, now I can 

do it,” he said. 

“There’s not many people in New 

Zealand that know much about it 

[Crohn’s] and that’s another reason 

that we’re doing it.” 

He will team up with his friends 

– Mr Limmer, Ken Dunning and 

Josh Tabley – for the race. 

“Ken didn’t know but I had him 

eyed-up almost straight away, I 

wanted him to join because I used 

to be part of a soccer club with 

him,” Mr Young said. 

“And Josh, I didn’t know it when 

he signed up, but his dad actually 

has Crohn’s. So that’s the reason 

he’s doing it.” 

Family and friends reacted 

positively to the news that Mr 

Young had decided to take part. 

“My wife and two sons were 

supportive. They straight away got 

on board with the idea and said 

I’ve got to do it,” Mr Young said. 

He isn’t daunted by the challenge 

either, although he has plenty of 

fitness work to do. 

He has been doing regular gym 

work to get back into shape. He 

also cycles five times a week. 

Mr Young wants people to feel 

less ashamed about the symptoms 

of the disease and take action early. 

“If you’ve got symptoms, get 

checked out before it gets worse,” 

he said. 

He said competing in the event 

cost the four men $10,000 and he 

hoped to raise more to donate to 

charity.

Halswell’s history on show 


Mr Ridder lived in Halswell for 

81 years, until he passed away in 

2002, aged 85. 

“I got to know Doug very well 

and he had a wonderful collection 

of history of the Halswell Quarry, 

and the early settlers of Halswell,” 

Mr Moore said. 

“When he retired and went 

up to Napier to live, he gave me 

all his boxes of photographs and 

handwritten notes that he had,” 

he said. 

A lot of the history work 

focused on the Halswell Quarry, 

which opened in the 1860s and 

closed in 1990. 

Mr Ridder’s research showed 

that much of the broken metal in 

the quarry’s early years was used 

to form roads replacing tracks that 

were prone to winter flooding. 

One of the tracks, that ran from 

the south to the then new city of 

Christchurch, was named Lincoln 

Rd, now known as Halswell Rd. 

The photographs will be 

displayed at the Halswell Quarry 

Information Centre on Saturday 

and Sunday from 9am to 5pm.

Charity rally that follows road rules 



MOTORISTS WILL have 

a chance to show off their 

driving skills for a rally on 

Sunday. 

It is organised by Countdown 

Church Corner, to raise money 

for Christchurch Hospital’s 

children’s ward. 

The rally is the brainchild of 

the store’s produce manager 

Murray Young, who came up 

with a concept of a car rally that 

follows road rules. 

Mr Young said the rally has 

been running for seven years. 

“We had to come up with ideas 

for fundraising and I’ve always 

had an interest for cars. 

“So it was natural for me to 

suggest a car rally or car trial,” 

Mr Young said. 

The rally begins at The Princess 

Margaret Hospital car park and 

participants are given a series of 

questions. 

The answers give drivers a clue 

as to what route the drivers have 

to follow. 

“We take note of the time when 

the driver leaves, their mileage 

when they start off and the mileage 

when they finish,” Mr Young 

said. 

“Who answers the questions

or passengers helping the drivers 

answer the questions and find the 

correct route. 

A barbecue will be held after 

rally.

– are they related?

physiotherapists Dinah Bradley and 

Tania Cliffton Smith, who specialise in 

hyperventilation and anxiety treatment. 

Their website notes one in 10 people 

experience some form of breathing pattern 

disorder or chronic over breathing at some 

time in their lives, resulting in a range 

of disturbing or frightening symptoms 

puzzling to you and your doctor. 

You feel unwell because of overbreathing, 

and overbreathing makes you feel unwell. 

A vicious cycle is established, which is a 

major stress all by itself. This is experienced 

currently by many Cantabrians, says Ietje 

van Stolk of Physical Sense Gym & Physio. 

As she explains, it is normal to breathe fast 

and in the upper chest when we are in danger 

and fight or flight is needed. We know all 

about that here, due to the earthquakes. 

Normally, once the danger is gone, our 

breathing should restore itself within a 

couple of days. We would then be using the 

diaphragm for our normal nonstressed 

breathing. We have been having a hard 

time restoring our breathing pattern 

here in Canterbury because every time 

our body tried to achieve that, the next 

aftershock came rolling in. Even though the 

aftershocks have significantly diminished, 

some people’s fight or flight mode 

breathing has become chronic, or habitual, 

Ietje says. And, as she points out, using the 

wrong muscles for breathing means these 

overworked muscles cause headaches, neck 

pain and jaw pain. 

With fast upper chest breathing, sighing 

and yawning, the resulting disturbance 

of our oxygen and carbon dioxide levels 

can give us the feeling we are not able to 

control our own body. One moment you 

are feeling fine, next moment your chest 

feels tight, you feel out of breath, your 

heart beats erratically and you may even 

experience dizziness and/or tingling. 

Very scary if you do not understand what 

is happening. No wonder this causes 

anxiety. Not being the boss over our own 

body makes us anxious, anxiety feeds the 

faulty breathing pattern, and so it goes on.

found was that protein foods thickened the 

blood and vinegar thinned it. As the blood 

thickens it cannot pass as easily and quickly 

through the blood vessels and capillaries. 

This poor blood flow would reduce cellular 

health by limiting nutrients to the cells as 

well as waste elimination from the cells. 

To prevent cell damage the body naturally 

increases blood pressure but this puts 

more stress on the blood vessels, organs 

and heart. Having ACV and H with meals 

will help prevent protein raising the blood 

pressure. It also contributes to a feeling 

of greater well-being because the thinner 

blood circulates quickly and more easily 

through the blood vessels. Dr. Jarvis found 

regular consumption of CV and H to be 

an excellent health tonic with numerous

readily accepted by the body. Good health

has been a staple on the local events

Following post-EQ tradition, the 

festival will once again been spread 

across a variety of pop-up locations 

through the streets of Christchurch’s 

CBD. Cafés on New Regent Street, the 

Art Gallery, the brand new Tūranga 

Central Library, are just some of the 

spots that will be alive with jazz, swing 

and blues this weekend. FIESTA and 

Latino Week events are also included in 

this year’s programme, as well as

Carter, voted best baritone saxophone 

player in Downbeat Magazine several
