Growing up, I wanted to
do all of the things. In my
early years, my passion for
Nancy Drew inspired a
desire to become a
detective . . . until I
realized that people don't
actually dress up as ghosts
and haunt ranches.
How depressing.
For a while I wanted to be
a ballerina, but I couldn't
afford a leotard so,
obviously, that dream had
to die.
Then I was convinced it
was my life calling to ride
horses. I wrote a letter to
my parents that was quite
melodramatic, pitching
the idea to them and
asking for an initial
investment in my future.
The endeavor failed.
(I have never recovered.)
I went through everything
from wanting to be a nurse
to starting a business called
"Little Brown's Playhouse."
Rachel and I still aren't
sure exactly what that
business did. I still find
notes written in journals
about all the things we'd
do with "LBP." It was
everything from a bakery
to a club to a treehouse.
Then came the fateful day
my mom asked me to
follow a simple design
tutorial she'd found online
for using Adobe Illustrator
to create a branch graphic.
I. Fell. In. Love.
After I was done with that
tutorial, I found another.
