Local artist, Jamie Primrose, has his latest exhibition ‘Sparkling 

Hues’ 2-10th November with over 50 beautiful new oil paintings, 

including many views of the Meadows (p18-19). See his

The Eric Liddell Centre at Holy Corner is looking for your help

well-known artist 

walks, capturing atmospheric moments at 

different times of the day and year. 

From superb works depicting fleeting 

spring-time flourishes of delicate pink cherry 

blossom in the late afternoon (see pic to the 

left) and towards twilight, he effortlessly 

evolves to exuberant verdant tones of 

autumn in a glorious warm, impressionistic 

haze (see pic below). Then onto glistening 

snow on the parklands – bathing in crisp, 

clear winter light creating a subtle, soft 

pastel-shaded palette for his alluring oils

Having achieved past sell-out solo shows of 

his stunning artworks and over 30 highly 

successful new collections in Edinburgh and 

London since 2003, the acclaimed artist‟s 

investment original paintings and exclusive 

limited edition prints are continually in 

demand by a discerning, loyal and 

expanding clientele in the UK and abroad. 

Primrose is always captivated by the 

ever-changing nature of light, especially in 

the early morning and late afternoon when 

the light, atmosphere and colours in the sky 

change rapidly. As he lives locally (in 

Marchmont), he often draws inspiration from 

the visually stunning seasonal changes in 

the Meadows and on Bruntsfield Links, 

which we know and love (with a perceptive 

flair for beautifully capturing local 

architecture, including Barclay Church).

Thriving Reputation 

Jamie Primrose is one of Scotland‟s most 

prominent, sought-after contemporary 

painters. Having attended The Edinburgh 

Academy (1977-90), he gained a Fine Art 

degree at Newcastle University (1990-94) 

and then remarkably travelled the world and 

worked in London for almost a decade 

without lifting a paintbrush. In 2003, he 

returned home to the capital to become a 

professional artist and has since then 

achieved outstanding success and critical 

acclaim.

PLUM JAM RECIPE 

Ingredients 

900g dessert plums (weight without stones) 

4 tbsp water 

900g sugar 

2 tbsp lemon juice 

1 knob butter approx 1 tsp 

Instructions 

Halve the fruit and remove the stones. 

Wash your jars and place in a low oven (see notes). 

Put into a large pan with the water and cook gently until the plums are soft but not disintegrated. 

Add the sugar and lemon juice and stir until the sugar has dissolved. 

Bring to the boil and boil rapidly, remove from the heat after 5 minutes and test for set (see notes). 

When setting point has been reached, skim off the most of the froth (scum) into a bowl (you can still eat 

this, it's not dirty just frothy) then add the knob of butter which will disperse the remaining scum. 

Let it cook for about 15 minutes so the fruit settles and doesn't sink to the bottom of the jars. 

Ladle into sterilised jars and leave to cool before sealing. 

Recipe Notes 

To Sterilise jars: thoroughly wash the jars, rinse in cold water, then turn upside down on a baking tray. 

Place in the oven and turn the heat on very low leave for about 15 minutes, remove just before filling. 

To Test for Set: 

After about 5 mins, spoon a little jam onto a cold saucer. Place it back in the fridge for 2 minutes then 

push the jam with your fingertip. If it wrinkles, the jam is ready. If not, cook for a few mins more and test 

again, with another cold saucer. If you have a sugar thermometer, it will read 105C when ready.

Marchmont & Sciennes Community Council meet 

on the 4th Wednesday of every month at 

7.30pm at St Catherine's of Argyle Church hall, 

ie. Wed 24th October and Wed 28th November. 

Everyone is welcome to attend. 

The Christmas Tree community carol singing will 

be on Saturday 24th November at 4pm at the 

Christmas tree outside ScotMid Coop, 

Marchmont Crescent/Roseneath Street. 

...The Royal Hospital for Sick Children moves later 

this year to Little France and the site has been sold 

to developers. They have submitted plans to the 

Council Planning Dept who are considering them 

now. The MSCC has been monitoring events from
