Volvo hooks up with Krone 

for City trailer trials 

Volvo Trucks, United Kingdom 

and Ireland, has been 

trialling a Krone City Liner 

in urban areas, including 

inner London, to re-open the 

debate regarding the use of 

articulated vehicles, where 

currently the London 

Lorry Control Scheme (LLCS) 

restricts the movement of HGVs over 

18 tonnes but does not apply to 

‘rigid’ or 8-wheel vehicles. 

Nicknamed ‘Lorry Ban’ the scheme 

controls where HGVs over 18 tonnes 

can drive at night and weekends and 

requires permission to be granted 

by London Councils - who manage 

the Traffic Order on behalf of 31 

London boroughs, the City of 

London and on the Transport for 

London Road Network. 

The Krone City Liner trailer is 

designed specifically for use in urban 

environments where ‘conventional’ 

semitrailers are less able to 

manoeuvre, owing to restricted 

space and overall vehicle length. 

Its compact box body rides on an 

11.025m chassis with twin axles, both 

rated at 9000kg and has a wheel 

base (king pin to second axle) of 

7.40m. Furthermore, the front axle 

can be raised and lowered while the 

rear axle is force-steering - at up to 

25 degrees.

explains Martin Tomlinson, Volvo’s 

Head of Product Demonstration. 

“Also, it clearly demonstrates 

that an articulated vehicle of this 

specification is equally suitable 

as an 8-wheeler when it comes to 

operating in urban areas.” 

The LLCS has been in place since 

1985, under the Greater London 

(Restriction of Goods Vehicles) 

Traffic Order 1985, but now, says 

Volvo and many other players in the 

UK commercial transport industry, it 

is time to review the scheme. 

“Quite simply” adds Martin, “over 

the last 30 or so years, technology 

has moved on: vehicle and trailer 

designs are now more sophisticated 

than ever and by using this latest 

‘City solution’ from Krone and 

Volvo, we feel it’s time to put the 

discussion regarding the restriction 

of articulated vehicles in urban areas 

back on the table.”

Services celebrate 25 

years as more Krone 

Dry Liners join the fleet 

ACME Production Services, 

the event and entertainment 

transport specialists have 

added a further two Krone 

Dry Liner box trailers to their 

fleet which, says the company, 

will provide maximum load 

protection and secure 

carriage for their UK and 

European customers. 

Now in their 25th year, working mainly 

for production, sound and lighting 

companies, ACME require secure 

loading to safeguard against potential 

theft and damage during transit. 

Director Lance Lovell explains: 

“For 25 years we’ve been providing 

specialised transport and 

storage services to the event and 

entertainment industries; trucking 

everything from a single flight 

case, all the way up to a complete 

music tour production. Our trailers 

therefore, need to be built to the 

highest standard to ensure safe and 

secure transport. These Dry Liners 

from Krone are virtually impregnable 

and are internally equipped to suit 

our specific loading needs.” 

To achieve the specification best 

suited to ACME, Krone’s sales team 

proposed a bespoke combination 

of design features including steel 

‘container-type’ barn doors with 

flush fit and integrated double 

locking which is easily operated from 

underneath the doors. Drum brakes 

were also specified. 

The body is constructed from 

galvanised steel cassette panels, 

including the front bulkhead, which 

has horizontal internal reinforcement 

and a 250mm fork lift protection 

strip. A modified keyhole garment 

system accepts universal loading 

beams - ideal for mixed loads - while 

the internal walls are reinforced with 

a 350mm kick-strip strip. Also, an 

impressive internal load height 

of 2.915m is achieved within the 

4m limit. 

“We’ve been with Krone since 

2014” adds Lance, “and I can 

truly say it’s been 100% positive.

delivery service along with a 

diverse range of specialist storage

capacity since adding 

a further 10 Krone trailers 

to its fleet.

Now in its 20th year Ray Moran, 

incorporating Moran and Boxwell 

International, runs a multi-national 

haulage operation via all major 

Irish and UK sea ports throughout 

Europe, including Germany, The 

Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, 

France and Spain. 

“We started with one Krone trailer 

to see how things were” says Ray 

Moran, “and soon realised that the 

combination of build quality and 

loading flexibility were good reasons 

to add some more. Accordingly, 

we now have one Cool Liner 

‘Duoplex’ refrigerated trailer, 4 Dry 

Liner box trailers and 5 Profi Liner 

curtainsiders. All of which come 

into their own for specific aspects 

of our operation.” 

The Cool Liner, manufactured at 

Krone’s Lubtheen plant in Germany, 

is fitted with Krone’s new ISOWALL 

moveable bulkhead, which is ideal 

for mixed temperature loads. 

A newly designed balancer 

system combined with a locking 

lever positioned at the top of the 

bulkhead, makes the ISOWALL 

easy to open, close and slide along 

the trailer. Also, due to the vertical 

movement of the bulkhead when 

opening and closing, no additional 

components are required for 

vacuum ventilation. 

Furthermore, when stowed to the 

roof, magnets hold the bulkhead in 

place, so there is no requirement for 

secondary locking or risk of fork lift 

obstruction. 

“Plus” says Ray, “when in use, the 

ISOWALL can be positioned hard-up 

against the load for added security 

and better use of load space. It’s 

lightweight and very easy to move 

along the trailer.” 

The Dry Liners, meanwhile, are 

manufactured at Krone’s Herzlake 

factory in Germany and are designed 

to work in both the UK and European 

markets: The slim, 100mm neck 

affords additional load volume and 

with a fifth wheel height of 1,250mm, 

a total height of 4,000mm allows an 

internal height of 2,615mm. 

“These box trailers are 

lighter and give us greater 

internal height” adds 

Ray. “34 Europallets is no 

problem and the strong 

construction is an asset 

when transporting high 

value and sensitive loads.” 

“For fast and flexible loading” 

continues Ray, “the Profi Liners are 

built for the job. Easy to open and 

close and with the strapping points 

all the way along each side rave, 

we can position mixed loads 

securely anywhere along the trailer 

bed. Also, the drivers can get to the 

straps from the inside, which is 

a plus for comfort and safety.” 

Each of the Krone trailers is built 

to European Code XL (en12642xl) 

standard which, says Ray Moran, is 

an important quality badge for their 

customers throughout the continent.

Monahans Transport 

brings the Krone 

Box Liner to 

Southampton Port 

Monahans Transport, the 

specialist container logistics 

operator has taken delivery 

of two Box Liner container 

carriers from Krone which, 

reports the company, are 

the first to operate from 

Southampton Port. 

Joining Monahan’s vehicle fleet of 

26 Euro 6 tractors and accompanying 

container carriers, the new 

sliding- bogie skeletal trailers are 

manufactured by Krone in Europe 

and designed in Germany with close 

involvement from the UK sales team 

to ensure compatibility with the UK 

and Irish market. 

The Box Liner combines features 

which have been tried and tested 

over several decades with the latest 

(KTL) paint application technology 

and is designed for loading flexibility, 

hard work and a long working life.

Opex Logistics take on new Krone 

trailers for aerospace work 

Opex Logistics, the transport 

and freight-handling specialists 

have added 5 Krone Profi Liner 

curtainsiders to their UK and 

European fleet. 

Based in Bristol, Opex are using 

the new trailers for aerospace 

components handling on national 

and international routes and 

according to General Manager, 

Stephen Kempton, the Profi Liners’ 

loading flexibility is an asset to this 

type of specialist work. 

“These curtainsiders are fitted with 

sliding roofs which is ideal for fast 

and secure loading of outsized 

loads and particularly for the sort of 

items we handle for our aerospace 

contracts. They are fitted with the 

standard Krone Multi Lock loading 

system which has around 130 

lashing points along each side rave. 

This provides virtually unlimited 

strapping options and means that the 

cargo is firmly secured at any point 

along the trailer bed.” 

Also,” adds Stephen “the

accessed from outside and 

inside the trailer, which is a

for European work.

Evyan Transport chooses Krone 

for lightweight versatility 

Evyan Transport, the 

Chelmsford-based general 

haulier has taken delivery of a 

Krone Profi Liner which, says 

the company, will cope with 

a greater variety of loads and 

trim fuel costs compared to 

heavier trailers on the fleet 

With sliding roof, Krone’s Multi 

Lock loading system, Krone axles 

and Krone ‘EasyRider’ tyres, all 

assembled at the company’s 

Werlte manufacturing facility in 

NW Germany, the trailer is a fine 

example of Krone’s integrated trailer 

design and production capability. 

“This is always a competitive 

business,” remarks Evyan Operation 

Director, Andrei Brasoveanu. “So, 

it makes sense to operate trailers 

which are economic to run and 

easily adapted to suit a wide variety 

of cargo.” 

In this respect, the Profi Liner is 

equipped as standard with Multi 

Lock strapping points every 100 mm 

along each side rave, which enables 

Evyan to securely strap virtually any 

type of load along the trailer length. 

Each point has a loading tolerance 

of two tonnes and can be accessed 

from inside and outside the curtain - 

good for speed and driver safety. 

“The weight makes a difference 

too”, adds Andrei. “We carry mixed 

loads of scaffold bundles, palletised 

food, boxes of clothes - whatever - 

and having around 900kg less tare 

weight means fuel and wear costs

Code EN 12642 XL the Profi Liner 

comes with a 30mm-thick phenoliccoated 

plywood floor rated at 

7,000kg forklift axle loading, a bolted 

steel front bulkhead and Krone’s 

steel, container-type barn doors with 

integrated locks for added security.

we have a versatile trailer 

which combines quality with
