Home & Garden Don’t let your guard down as your Christmas Tree goes up Reports say that we spent £80 billion over Christmas 2016, and much of that was on-line. Cybercriminals target consumers who buy more than usual at this time of year, are very busy and probably stressed. Look out for scams and protect yourself this Christmas Charity Phishing – scammers target your Christmas goodwill by sending emails which appear to come from a legitimate charity. Links in their emails lead you to their scam website where they are waiting to take your money. If an email from a charity prompts you to want to donate, find the real website and donate directly. Fake Online Shops – aim to exploit our desire for a bargain or the search for an out of stock toy. Avoid poorly designed websites that don’t display a full address and telephone number and contact details if something were to go wrong. Phone the telephone number to check if it is real and only buy from a secure site (with the padlock symbol). Many goods ordered online should have a 14 day cancellation period – if the website does not offer this then that company may not abide by the law. Social Media Scams – tempt people with good deals on consumer items, like jewellery. Scammers share links to phishing sites and malware, so don’t click on suspicious looking links. Set up good security on your social media accounts. Be scam-aware and have a fantastic Christmas.
