VOTE
2018
PROJECT
Alarmed by the decrease in voter turnout
amongst black and Latino men in the 2016
election, Jeffrey Feliz-Ybes curated an idea
focusing our efforts of reversing this trend
and bringing awareness to the political
damage that has affected our community.
Our plan was simple: create images of
beautiful men to allure the viewer and
combine them with links and text to
encourage participation in the upcoming
midterm election. While conceptualizing
the approach to the photography, campaign
photographer Dick Mitchell recalled a
riveting image of a young African American
man at a civil rights march in the 1960s. He
was simply staring down the camera with
the word “VOTE” painted crudely on his
forehead. This image became the inspiration
for this series of portraits. From here, some
of the best models in the New York City area
enthusiastically jumped on board, showed up
and painted their bodies to pose a message—
simply, “Vote,” not only in this upcoming
midterm election, but every election moving
forward.
Nov. 6, 2018, will be the midterm election
leading up to the 2020 presidential election,
and we are encouraging everyone to go
out and vote. Before you head out to vote,
everyone must first register. Registration
is an easy, two-minute process. You can
either visit your closest Department of
Motor Vehicles (DMV) or go online using
any phone, tablet or computer at www.vote.
org. Once you’re registered to vote, you will
then have to find your voting station. Finding
your voting station is also easy and can
be found at www.vote.org or https://nyc.
pollsitelocator.com/search.
We are not here to persuade you who to
vote for. We are just simply here telling
you to GET OUT AND VOTE! Change the
stigma that black and brown people are not
aware of politics—we do, and we will have
our voices heard. Having your voices heard
starts at registering to vote and researching
what political issues are most relatable to.
To further spark this movement, follow the
social media hashtag #IWillVote2018

Kathy Griffin is officially on the A List—
period. An army of fans around the world
rejoice seeing Griffin overcome and
conquer the onslaught of overreaction,
aggression and bullying by Donald
Trump, his administration and the Federal
Government. We love her as a comedian,
a courageous public figure, a badass who
tells it like it is at the pinnacle of her career.
We first tuned in to “Suddenly Susan” to
watch Kathy’s character, Vicki Groener,
because she was the most interesting
person to watch, and because we knew she
was headed up Hollywood’s alphabetical
pecking order. Now, she has earned two
Emmy Awards for her hit show on the Bravo
network’s “My Life on the D List,” a Golden
Globe Award and in 2013 she attained
the Guinness World Records title for
most televised stand-up specials with the
premiere of her 20th show on HBO. We live
vicariously through her victory as she leaves
the small D behind and steps into the big
A, while laughing our heads off.
Modesty aside, how would you describe
yourself?
I’m a goddamn legend! Alright, I may
not be one until I’m dead, but oh, what
a legend I’ll be! I describe myself as
someone who lives to make people
laugh. Yes, I like to stir things up and push
boundaries, but hey, if you want to see
some nice, homespun, clean humor, watch
the “700 Club.”
How does it feel to receive the
Comedian of the Year Award from the
Palm Springs International Comedy
Festival?
What a difference a year makes! This award
is so meaningful to me, because I have
spent decades truly trying to hone my craft
and being the very best comedian, actress
and improviser I can be. After my Trump
mask scandal, I learned very quickly that I
simply had to up my game with my material
and be truly fearless about it.
You went through a tough, tumultuous
and controversial year and came out
victorious. Your world tour, Laugh Your
Head Off, is a smashing success, selling
out quicker than you can add dates. How
is the sweet smell of victory?
Like a brand new lavender-scented candle.
Honestly, it has been a slow and laborious
claw back, but completely worth every up
and down. I have enjoyed doing the Kathy
Griffin Laugh Your Head Off world tour
even though it has been the most difficult
tour of my life.

If nothing else, it is vital to me that anyone
who is interested and watching sees that
this president, or any other, should not
have the power to try and decimate a
single American citizen. I have actually
enjoyed fighting back, one joke at a time.
What have you learned in the last year,
having gone through what you did?
Would you do anything differently?
I would do many things differently! I think
it is hilarious when celebrities jump to
the “I wouldn’t change a thing” B.S. This
experience, which started with a photo
amplified on TMZ, to federal agencies
investigating me and being put on the “No
Fly List” as if I am a terrorist, is so over the
top. I had to make many missteps to try
to figure my own way out of this unique
and historic situation. Looking back, I am
probably most grateful that I ultimately
listened to my inner comedy gut and
decided to basically put my middle finger
in the air and get back on the road.
You volunteer your time and open the
drag pageant Best in Drag Show, which
is an annual fundraiser for Aid for AIDS.
Why is this cause important to you?
Best in Drag Show benefits a great
organization called Alliance for Housing
and Healing, formerly known as Aid
for AIDS. The event started out very
organically in the living room of Alexis
Pittman’s apartment. We lost Alexis to HIV,
and in his honor, the show gets bigger
and better every year. It is an over-the-top
drag show like you have never seen. The
evening is also wildly inappropriate when
it comes to the characters, costumes and
humor. And who doesn’t love that?
Do you feel pressure to be funny all the
time during your daily life? Is there an
expectation?
I’m pretty “on,” as they say. I would say
I am a little atypical compared to most
comedians I have known, in that I am
similar off stage to my incredibly delightful
persona on stage. Many comedians are
very shy and often pensive, bruting types
off stage. I like my quiet time, but I really
do try to make the people around me
laugh every day.
What does your average day look like?
When I’m on tour, I’m on a nighttime
schedule. Sleep in, have a healthy meal
three hours prior to show time, and it
usually takes me about three hours to
come down after the show. I watch a
lot of late-night cable. When I’m off the
road, I do a lot of writing, producing fun
little videos for my social media, and I’m
just now starting to be asked to do guest
appearances on television again. I was very
honored to play Kellyanne Conway twice
this season on Comedy Central’s “The
President Show.”
What’s new on your playlist?
I like to let my friends contribute to my
playlist. It is quite varied. If it were up
to me, it would pretty much be Céline,
Backstreet Boys, Britney…you get the
idea. But my more musically sophisticated
friends keep me in my place. Although
I wish I could get Josh Groban to stop
taking off all my Michael Bolton songs.
You have a massive army of fans around
the world—tell me about them.
Well, they sure showed up this year, didn’t
they? One thing that gave me a sliver of
hope days after the Trump photo was a
video on Twitter of a group of gay guys
dressed as I was in the photo (blue dress
and all), carrying Donald Trump masks
and parading around Fire Island. The
LGBT community is ahead of the curve,
once again. And yes, I know that is a pun.
I will admit, the photo that has caused
me so much angst is the photo that this
year has single-handedly turned me into
a global touring artist. Before North
America, I started this show in Auckland,
New Zealand, and ended up in Reykjavik,
Iceland, and everywhere in between.
Tell me a secret—a good one!
After the infamous Trump photo, Cher
sent me the following text that made me
laugh out loud: “You wanted to be famous,
bitch!”
I DROVE ALL NIGHT
I don’t often write about my life
before I moved to New York,
but I’ve been thinking about
October 2011.
The Ex Fiancé broke up with
me in June 2011, so it was my
first Halloween post breakup.
Since he moved back to
Minnesota for work, I wasn’t
worried about seeing him out
and about.
to pull in a younger audience,
so they got into the hearse
(which was really just a van with
the seats folded down in the
back), and I followed them in
my Ford Focus.
I hadn’t so much as ordered my
first drink at the bar when my
phone started buzzing. It was
him—The Ex Fiancé. I hadn’t
heard from him in a while.
her. Inside, I heard the dog we
adopted together barking.
The Ex Fiancé opened the
door in sweatpants, rubbing
the sleep from his eyes. “Ian-
Michael?”
“I miss you too,” I said,
standing there in Superman
underwear and an unbuttoned
shirt.
I was getting ready with my
best friend, E. E lived with his
older boyfriend (now husband)
in his boyfriend’s funeral
home—yes, E’s boyfriend was
a funeral home director, living
in the top floor of said funeral
home.
“What are you?” I asked,
eyeing his sporty black
underwear, but as soon as
he put on a pair of shoulder
pads I knew. “Ah, sexy football
player.”
“Yup. And you?”
“Sexy-Clark-Kent-Changing-
Into-Superman,” I said, proud
of my superman underwear,
hipster glasses and white
unbuttoned shirt.
We were, perhaps, not the
most creative costumers that
year.
There are very few gay bars
in Iowa, and only two within
a reasonable drive from the
funeral home: There was
Belle’s Basix, a gay bar just
down the street owned by the
drag queen Pretty Belle, and
Studio 13, where you could
see Sasha Belle every weekend
before she booked “RuPaul’s
Drag Race.” Studio 13 tended
It was a text. A simple text, just
three words.
I miss you.
I looked up at E, a full Long
Island iced tea in my hand.
“What?” he asked.
“I have to go.” I handed him
my drink: With his drink in
his other hand, he’d have no
hands to stop me.
“Why? What happened?”
“He texted me.” I didn’t
have to tell him who.
“This is a bad idea,” he
said, quietly.
“Probably,” I said, and
raced for my car.
Like the iconic Celine Dion
sang, “I drove all night to
get to you.” I was pulled
over by a cop for speeding:
When I started to tell him
the whole story about The
Ex Fiancé, he let me go
with just a warning.
It was past 2 a.m. when I
finally got to the duplex
his shared with his sister.
I rang the doorbell once,
quickly, hoping not to wake
The Ex Fiancé leaned forward
and kissed me. I can’t be sure,
but I bet that’s the night he
decided to start applying to
grad schools in New York. The
reason we both ended up here.
All because we were caught
up in love, caught up in a love
song that only Celine Dion
could sing right.
Happy Halloween! Now
everyone, take your
clothing off! I worked as
a bartender for almost
15 years, and I saw more
skin working Halloween
night than any night at a
strip club. The gays love
a good costume that
shows off their bodies,
and why shouldn’t they?
They’ve worked hard for
them. But, the creativity
is sometimes lacking. I
mean, how many shirtless
superheroes can there
really be? Someone give
me sexy John Wayne
Gacy, am I right?
Last Halloween, I feel in
love… with a vampire.
I was at an apartment
party on 18th Street
in Chelsea when this
beautiful guy showed
up: blue eyes, jet black
hair and dressed like
that Twilight guy. He
was in character the
entire night. I ended up
getting messed up, and
we eventually f*cked in
the stairwell (real classy,
I know). He disappeared
THOMAS
TALKS
ABOUT: MONSTER
after, and I haven’t seen
him since. I asked a few
people about him, but it
was packed, and no one
seemed to know. It was
the hottest sex, and I
can’t stop thinking about
him. This isn’t as much
a question as it’s me
hoping you’ll print this
and he’ll come looking
for me. Dramatic?
Tragic? Pathetic? - Male,
Gay, 23
There you go. I’m putting
it out into the universe.
I don’t know if this is
dramatic, tragic, pathetic,
weird or maybe fun?
Might be a fetish, an
attraction to vampires?
Are you a certified fang
banger? Seriously though,
this might be something
you want to explore, just
in case this guy doesn’t
come flying back around.
Fingers crossed you
meet him again this year,
but maybe try to get his
contact info too, instead
of just his vampire D.
I’ve been struggling
with my gender identity
for a while. I think I
might actually be a
woman. I’ve felt this
way for a really long
time, but always hid it
and thought maybe I
was just gay. I guess I
identify as bi though?
Lots of questioning
MASHING
going on. As a little
kid I remember telling
my mom that I was her
little girl, not boy, and
she would yell at me.
Eventually I stopped.
I was thinking that
maybe this year for
Halloween I’d go out in
public wearing women’s
clothing for the first
time and just tell my
friends it’s a joke. Test
the waters? Is this a
terrible idea? Or totally
offensive? I’m really
scared, but also really
excited. - Trans?, Bi, 21
I say go for it. Allow
yourself to really dive in
and see how you feel.
Remember, though,
being trans isn’t about
just dressing up and
going out for a night; it’s
more complicated. I’d
recommend you check
out some online forums
and get acquainted with
the trans community in
NYC. Luckily there are
tons of people here who
know what you’re going
through and can help you
make the best decisions
for yourself. I think it’s
awesome that you want
to explore and express
this side of yourself, and
even though it’s just one
night, I hope you have an
amazing time!
BIANCA
DEL RIO
HOSTS THE
GREATEST
SHOW ON
EARTH
This year’s 10th annual
“RuPaul’s Drag Race”
Halloween show is taking
place “Under the Big
Top” at Lincoln Center.
On Halloween night,
ringmaster Bianca Del
Rio will be joined by a
multitude of spooky and
deadly circus acts from
Big Apple Circus as well
as special guests Violet
Chachki and Kameron
Michaels.
“We are always looking
for the next big, unique
idea that will drop jaws
and leave people in
awe,” explains the show’s
producer, Brandon Voss.
“So when the idea of
uniting the Big Apple
Circus acts with our drag
talent was first presented,
our creative minds began
spinning.”

With three of the
most popular
performers in
drag right now
and a top-notch
group of circus
acts, “Under
the Big Top”
promises to be
the greatest show
on earth. Bianca
Del Rio explains
more.
He promises it
will be a show
not to be missed.
“Back in the old
days, going to
the circus was
a glamorous
experience,” he
continues. “We’ve
built a show that
will transport
audiences back to
that golden era of
spectacle while
also celebrating
Halloween.”

INTERVIEW
HAVE YOU
RINGMASTER-ED A
CIRCUS BEFORE?
YES, I CALLED IT
BEING ON “DRAG
RACE.”
WHAT DOES
THE JOB
ENTAIL?
HELL IF I
KNOW.
ISN’T IT
OBVIOUS
YET THAT I
SIMPLY MAKE
THIS SH*T UP
AS I GO
ALONG?

WILL VIOLET CHACHKI’S AERIAL
DEATH ACT BE HER FINAL
PERFORMANCE?
WE CAN ONLY HOPE.
MIGHT WE SEE YOU UP ON THE
TRAPEZE?
NO, YOU WILL NOT SEE ME UP
ON A TRAPEZE. WHAT, DO YOU
WANT ME TO BREAK A F***ING
HIP?
WHAT OTHER ACTS WILL
SHOCK AND AWE AUDIENCES
AT UNDER THE BIG TOP?
I THINK I MAY TRY TO HOLD A
CONVERSATION, OR MAYBE
EVEN SOME LIGHT BANTER
WITH KAMERON MICHAELS.
THAT WOULD SURE AS HELL
SHOCK ME.
WILL THERE BE ANY CLOWNS?
YOURS TRULY.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST
ABOUT HALLOWEEN, BIANCA?
YOU KNOW, IT USED TO BE THE
DRESSING UP PART, BUT WITH
MY CAREER, I DO THAT EVERY
DAY. NOW IT’S MORE ABOUT
THE DRUNK WHITE BITCHES
TRYING TO BE WOODLAND
CREATURES. I LOVE THEM.
WHO DO YOU PLAN TO DRESS
UP AS THIS YEAR?
SOMETHING YOU DON’T SEE
EVERY DAY: A DRAG
QUEEN WITH
TALENT.
“HALLOWEEN: UNDER THE
BIG TOP” TAKES PLACE
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31,
AT 8 P.M. AT LINCOLN CENTER’S
DAMROSCH PARK (62ND
STREET AND COLUMBUS AVE).
