The problem of aerial navigation without the use of a balloon has been solved at last.<br />

Over the sand hills of the North Carolina coast yesterday, near Kitty Hawk, two Ohio<br />

men proved that they could soar through the air in a flying machine of their own<br />

construction, with the power to steer it and speed it at will.<br />

Wilbur Wright, the chief inventor of the machine, sat in the operator’s car and when all<br />

was ready his brother unfastened the catch which held the invention at the top of the<br />

slope.<br />

The big box began to move slowly at first, acquiring velocity as it went, and when half<br />

way down the hundred feet the engine was started.<br />

The propeller in the rear immediately began to revolve at a high rate of speed, and<br />

when the end of the incline was reached the machine shot out into space without a<br />

perceptible fall.<br />

By this time the elevating propeller was also in motion, and, keeping its altitude, the<br />

machine slowly began to go higher and higher until it finally soared sixty feet above the<br />

ground.<br />

Maintaining this height by the action of the under wheel, the navigator increased the<br />

revolutions of the rear propeller, and the forward speed of the huge affair increased<br />

until a velocity of eight miles an hour was attained.<br />

But the inventor waited. Not until he had accomplished three miles, putting the<br />

machine through all sorts of maneuvers en route, was he satisfied.


Then he selected a suitable place to land, and, gracefully circling, drew his invention<br />

slowly to the earth, where it settled, like some big bird, in the chosen spot.<br />

“Eureka,” he cried, as did the alchemist of old.<br />

I am alone. I can see nothing at all. For 10 minutes I am lost. It is a strange position to be<br />

alone, unguided, without a compass in the air over the middle of the channel. I touch<br />

nothing. My hands and feet rest lightly on the levers. I let the aeroplane take its own<br />

course. I care not whither it goes. For 10 minutes I continue, neither rising nor falling<br />

nor turning, and then 20 minutes after I have left the French coast I see the green hills of<br />

Dover, the castle, and away to the west the spot where I intended to land.<br />

What can I do? It is evident that the wind has taken me out of my course. I am almost<br />

west of Margaret’s Bay, and I am going in the direction of the Goodwin Sands. Now it is<br />

time to attend to steering. I press a lever with my foot and turn easily toward the west,<br />

reversing the direction in which I am now travelling. Now, indeed, I am in difficulties,<br />

for the wind here by the cliffs is much stronger and my speed is reduced as I fight<br />

against it, yet my beautiful aeroplane responds —


Once more I turn my aeroplane, and describing a half-circle I enter the opening and find<br />

myself again over dry land. Avoiding the red buildings on my right, I attempt a<br />

landing, but the wind catches me and whirls me around two or three times. At once I<br />

stop my motor, and instantly my machine falls upon the land from a height of 65 feet. In<br />

two or three seconds I am safe upon your shores. Soldiers in khaki run up, and a<br />

policeman and two of my compatriots are on the spot. They kiss my cheek. The<br />

conclusion of my flight overwhelms me. I have nothing to say, but accept the<br />

congratulations.<br />

An uninterrupted navigable ocean, that comes to the threshold of every man’s door,<br />

ought not to be neglected as a source of human gratification and advantage…I feel<br />

perfectly confident that this noble art of flying will soon be brought home to man’s<br />

personal convenience, and that we shall be able to transport ourselves and families, and<br />

their goods and chattels, more securely by air than by water, and with a velocity of from<br />

20 to 100 miles per hour…Aerial navigation will form a most prominent feature in the<br />

progress of civilisation.<br />

Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)<br />

On April 12 th 1911 Pierre Prier made the first non-stop flight from London to Paris, in 3<br />

hours and 56 minutes.<br />

In March 1914 the first commercial passenger service was launched, between St<br />

Petersburg and Tampa, Florida.<br />

On November 22 nd 1914 the first German aircraft was shot down in aerial combat.<br />

In June 1919 Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown made the first non-stop<br />

crossing of the Atlantic, winning the £10,000 Northcliffe Prize.


In 1922 the first purpose-built air passenger terminal was opened, in Königsberg-Devau.<br />

On October 26 th 1925 Jimmy Doolittle won the Schneider Trophy, setting a world speed<br />

record of 245 miles per hour.<br />

In May 1927 Charles Lindbergh made the first solo crossing of the Atlantic in his Spirit<br />

of St Louis.<br />

In May 1930 Amy Johnson became the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia.<br />

Amelia Earhart made only the second solo flight across the Atlantic, and the first by a<br />

female pilot, in May 1932.<br />

On February 3 rd 1934 the first transatlantic airmail service was established, from<br />

Stuttgart to Buenos Aires.<br />

In August 1938 a Lufthansa Focke Wulf Fw 200 made the first non-stop passenger flight<br />

from Berlin to New York.<br />

By the late 1930s Aeroflot, then the world’s largest airline, was operating around 3000<br />

aircraft.<br />
