Sporle Afternoon WI
Beauty is in the eye of the holder
so says Shakespeare, but he didn’t
know of the aids available to help
“beauty”. I wonder what he would have said if
he saw just some of the array of cosmetics that
greeted members at our September meeting. Our
beauty consultant explained the contents and
uses of just some and used members as models.
How many items I wonder do tv characters use
both to enhance their looks or disguise their
features for some of the ghouls etc. As the year's
end approaches November will be our AGM
and committee members elections take place.
Members have a chance to put forward ideas for
outings, speakers etc. Sporle WI meet every 3rd
Tuesday of the month, 1:45 - 4 pm.
Beachamwell & District WI
In October, Beachamwell WI
celebrated 100 years of women’s
suffrage, with a dramatic
presentation about the long campaign to get votes
for women. Written and performed by members
of the group and illustrated by a backdrop of
photos, pictures and cartoons from the time,
the presentation explored the story of these
remarkable women, using the testimony of both
ordinary and famous suffragists who bravely dared
to break free from the expectations of their times.
The audience even sang some of the suffragist
anthems, the last of which, sung for the first time
at a meeting in London to celebrate women over
30 getting the vote in 1918, was “Jerusalem”! We
were delighted to welcome a number of visitors,
who all enjoyed an entertaining and thoughtprovoking
evening.
In November, we have our Annual Meeting, but
it will not be all business, as first there will be
a talk from Tina Burdett about the East Anglian
Children’s Hospice.
Looking ahead, we are hoping that more visitors
will join us for a Christmas special event on 6th
December, as we will be entertained by the music
and comedy of the “West End Waiters”. More
details next month.
The WI’s popular Christmas Fayre will be held this
year on Saturday, 1st December, at the new times
of 11.30-2.00. As usual, there will be our pop up
café, with soups, rolls and mulled wine, plus many
items on sale: hand crafted gifts, decorations,
cakes and preserves.
Visitors are always welcome to come along to WI
meetings. Any enquiries to Maggie Mackenzie
Swaffham Voices
Greetings to all old and new choir members.
You may have heard the sad news that The Rainbow
Community Choir has now disbanded. However,
fear not, you'll be thrilled to learn that we
have risen again with a new name and a new
choir leader.
So, welcome to Swaffham Voices, a brand new
choir with an exciting new range of songs, including
folk, blues, country and western and maybe
a bit of gospel thrown into the mix!! We are so
looking forward to welcoming and working with
our very talented new choir leader.
Our new term commences on Tuesday 18th September
at 7.30 at our usual venue, The Swaffham
Community Centre.
There are 13 familiar faces in the new choir who
would love to see "the old faces and friends"
back amongst us and also any new comers. So,
do come along on the 18th September to see
what's on offer - it may be the kind of new choir
you are looking to join. It is a completely free session,
open to everyone and a great chance for us
all to meet up again.
