Lily has changed!
From 1 July 2018, our Lily service expanded to
include everyone over 18, not just those in later
years. Lily provides a comprehensive range of
support in west Norfolk to combat loneliness and
social isolation in adults of all ages. The project
is linked to the 'No Lonely Day' initiative and
encourages our residents to develop friendships
and engage in their local communities.
The Lily online directory lists organisations, services
and activities that help people to live healthy, active
and independent lives. It includes information
relevant to adults of all ages. If you would like
your event or organisation to be included in the
directory, get in touch asklily.org.uk
Lily Advisors from local charities are available to
offer one-to-one support to people at home or in
community locations. Lily has a strong focus on
community development, by helping groups to
arrange activities and encouraging volunteering,
and by providing community events, onsite
information sessions, and support for employers,
schools, and colleges. If you, or anyone you know,
would like to know how Lily can help, call 01553
616200 and choose option 6.
Wissey U3A
At the last monthly meeting
on 4th October, our speaker,
Martin Lloyd, gave members
an extremely interesting presentation about Assassins,
Traitors and Spies. With no script to refer to and with no
slides, Martin set the scene and narrated the stories of
three historical assassination attempts which were only
made possible by the use of illegally obtained passports.
As a civil servant for over 22 years Martin had amassed
a collection of over 800 early and interesting passports
from around the world. Martin is also an accomplished
author and had copies of his 7 novels for sale at the end
of his presentation. At November’s meeting Sir Henry
Bedingfeld will give a presentation about Heraldry.
Wissey U3A members are still going to a series of reenactments
about the trial of Suffragette Miriam Pratt in
Norwich Castle. Members have reported how fantastic
the productions have been and members can look
forward to more re-enactments which will continue
through until early December.
Members were impressed by a U3A exhibition during
Kings Lynn’s ‘Heritage Week’ which focused on ‘Imports
and Exports through Kings Lynn in the 18th and 19th
centuries. If arrangements go to plan, members will also
be able to visit the Fakenham Museum of Gas and Local
History. The museum is housed in Fakenham’s former
gasworks which is now the only complete town gasworks
in the country. The Gasworks produced gas from the
heating of coal for 120 years before its closure in 1965.
The Croquet group has now closed for the winter period but
will hopefully restart in May 2019. The group was originally
started by Tony Evans in 1995 when the Wissey U3A was
formed. Although Jim Donald has been the group’s leader
since 1996, Jim decided to step down and hand over the
lead to another member. Many, many thanks to Jim for
leading the Wissey U3A Croquet group for over 22 years.
If you have a hobby or pastime which you would like to
share with others why not make enquires about joining the
Wissey U3A. Meetings are held at Holme Hale’s Pavilion on
the first Thursday of the month from 09.45 until mid-day.
For more information about the U3A movement, go
to www.u3a.org.uk or visit the Wissey Homepage at
www.u3asites.org.uk/wissey. Annual membership
of the Wissey U3A is usually £10 but from October
the membership fee for a period of 6 months will
only be £7.
