BIKES IN SCHOOLS<br />
The aim of these workshops is to train the<br />
teachers to deliver cycling-based lessons. Three<br />
Primary Schools in the Harbour Region received<br />
Learn to Ride teacher workshops:<br />
- 25 teachers from Upper Harbour Primary<br />
School<br />
- 35 teachers from Whangaparaoa School<br />
- 28 teachers from Albany Primary school<br />
A range of activities and skill-based games were<br />
delivered and the teachers were thoroughly<br />
engaged throughout. 100% of participants felt<br />
confident to apply the skills/knowledge from the<br />
workshop.<br />
LEARN TO RIDE<br />
Albany Junior High School Cycle Delivery<br />
In November and December <strong>2017</strong> Harbour Sport<br />
delivered cycle skills training at Albany Junior<br />
High School to 342 year 8 students for the first<br />
time. 12 students learnt to ride a bike. Prior to<br />
delivery 42% of students rated themselves as<br />
?very confident?riding on-road and on completion<br />
of the delivery this number had risen to 85%,<br />
showing a significant increase by 43%.<br />
Northcote Intermediate Grade 1 and Grade 2 Cycle<br />
Skills Delivery<br />
In November <strong>2017</strong>, Harbour Sport partnered<br />
with Auckland Transport to deliver a successful<br />
Introduction to Road and Everyday Cycling<br />
Programme to the year 7 students at Northcote<br />
Intermediate. Harbour Sport has built a great<br />
relationship with this school over the last three<br />
years. To date over 500 year 7 and 8 students<br />
have received cycle skills training at Northcote<br />
Intermediate. This provides an excellent<br />
foundation for increasing cycling in this area<br />
coupled with the cycling infrastructure that is<br />
planned over the next few years.<br />
This delivery again provided further opportunity<br />
for Cycle Instructors to gain more experience in<br />
delivering on-road, grade 2 training with more<br />
experienced instructors and assessors.<br />
All students received a full day of training<br />
beginning with off-road skills before applying<br />
road knowledge and skills learnt on the road in<br />
the afternoon.<br />
195 year 7 students, with 5 beginner students,<br />
completed the programme.<br />
RIDE LEADER WORKSHOP<br />
In November 12 adults attended the Ride Leader<br />
workshop held at Harbour Sport. The purpose of<br />
these workshops is to encourage those<br />
passionate cyclists who are keen to engage new<br />
riders into starting up and leading their own<br />
group rides.<br />
ADULT GRADE 1 AND GRADE 2 CYCLE SKILLS<br />
TRAINING<br />
In August 17 Korean females took part in an<br />
introduction to grade 1 and 2 cycling training<br />
held at Albany Stadium. 4 adults were given the<br />
opportunity to learn to ride and can now<br />
consistently pedal by themselves.<br />
HOLIDAY PROGRAMME<br />
Overall, 625 people, mainly children aged 5 to 12,<br />
participated in this programme in 4 different<br />
areas around our region. Northcote, Whenuapai,<br />
Warkworth and Whangaparaoa.<br />
NEW NATIONAL CYCLING PROGRAMME<br />
Since 2015, Harbour Sport has been actively<br />
participating in the planning, development and<br />
activation of the new National Cycling Training<br />
Programme. After a number of meetings with<br />
important national organisations, the BikeReady<br />
cycling programme is about to be launched in<br />
October <strong>2018</strong>.<br />
