ACTIVASIAN
The ActivAsian initiative has three key objectives:
- Improving sporting opportunities for Asian people, with a particular focus on school-aged children
- Improving access to information about sport and recreational opportunities for the Asian
community
- Encouraging more Asian people to participate in sport.
The following four strategic pillars serve to provide guidance on how we will achieve the above
outcomes, and build a robust programme, supporting the development of sport, recreational and
physical activity in the Asian communities:
1. Relationship Building
2. Participation
3. Education and Resources
4. Capability Building
In the past year, ActivAsian has been established and implemented across the Greater Auckland
region, with three full-time staff now employed by Sport Waitakere and Sport Auckland. We have also
experienced significant growth in our local ActivAsian initiative, with three full-time and three
part-time staff now a part of the team.
ACTIVASIAN VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME
The ActivAsian Volunteering Programme is an
initiative that many students have benefited and
are benefiting from. This year?s expansion to
Sport Auckland and Sport Waitakere meant more
young Asian New Zealanders in other regions
can be exposed to opportunities to be involved
in the sport and recreation community through
volunteering, developing social skills and
employability, being an active participant in
community events and many more.
The calendar year of 2018 has been statistically
proven to be the most successful year of the
ActivAsian Volunteering Programme since its
establishment. Below are some of the notable
achievements and statistics thus far:
- 255 more ActivAsian volunteer registrations in
2018 (180 registrations in 2017)
- 61.3% of all ActivAsian Volunteers are
between 16 to 22 years old
- Almost 100% of the total volunteers have
indicated an Asian nation as their country of
origin
- Over 25 volunteering opportunities were
promoted in 2018
New marketing engagement tools are being
adopted by the Regional Sports Trusts to
promote and achieve the programme?s
intermediate and final outcomes, while
long-established methods are being evaluated
and revamped. For example:
- ActivAsian WeChat groups
- ActivAsian Facebook groups and pages, e.g.
event pages and Facebook advert
- ActivAsian Volunteer MailChimp subscription
lists
- Organisations websites and social media
accounts
