POLICE HAVE noticed a 

significant improvement in the 

number of motorists drinking and 

driving in the district over the last 

week. 

Around 100 drivers in Lincoln 

and Leeston were pulled over during 

mobile patrols at the weekend 

and only one was over the limit. 

The female driver, in her early 

20s, recorded 600mcg/L on Saturday 

night in Lincoln, 350mcg/L 

over the limit of 250mcg/L. 

There have been 124 alcoholrelated 

car crashes in the district 

since 2013, 27 of them being either 

serious or fatal. 

Three drink drivers were stopped 

by police last week and four were 

stopped the week before that. 

Sergeant Phil Bayne said there 

was still a lot of work to be done in 

spite of a clear improvement. 

“It’s very difficult to tell over one 

weekend whether things have actually 

improved, for all we know it 

could increase next weekend.” 

Sergeant Bayne said police would 

continue to have a high visibility 

throughout the community to 

ensure drink driving remained 

low.

CHECKPOINTS, random stopping, 

publicity and word of mouth. 

It looks like all have combined to work 

the oracle when it comes to the police 

drink driving campaign in the district, or 

more specifically, in Lincoln and Leeston. 

As we report on page 1 today, the number of motorists 

caught over the limit dropped off significantly at the weekend. 

A number of motorists were being picked up in that 6-9pm 

time frame. 

But the only one caught at the weekend was a woman in her 

early 20s and that was very late at night. 

She was well over the limit, so it was a good job she was 

taken off the road. 

The moral of the story: Don’t slip back into bad habits.

Water stoush brewing 

between council and Government

say Selwyn is well-placed to 

continue maintaining its own 

water. 

Their comments come as 

the Government reviews how 

drinking water, 

wastewater and 

stormwater services 

are being managed.

district council’s 

audit and risk subcommittee 

meeting 

last week. 

Cr Watson said 

there is a “shared 

concern around 

the lack of real 

pathways and decision-making 

by the Government at this 

stage.” 

“We’re looking for definitive 

measures that we need to meet 

but also local solutions,” he said. 

DECISION: A Government review into how water services are 

managed could see a more centralised system put in place 

but district councillors say Selwyn should continue to maintain 

its own water.

expected there will be greater 

certainty and clarity within the 

next month. 

“Once Cabinet has considered 

the report on recommendations 

and options,” he said. 

Cr Miller said there has been 

an “in-depth” study of Selwyn 

water standards and believes 

the district council is supplying 

“very high-quality water” to 

residents at a low cost. 

“It doesn’t take a rocket 

scientist to work out that if you 

become aggregated or part of a 

larger scheme, potentially the 

cost to ratepayers for supply of 

water could be increased,” Cr 

Miller said. 

Mr Ward said research “indicates 

many smaller councils 

face acute costs upgrading infrastructure” 

to meet standards. 

He said cost is an important 

factor and will be a “major

consideration in future policy 

work on how to deliver a strong 

and sustainable three waters 

system.” 

Cr Miller said the district 

council is open to looking at 

suggestions to make its water 

supply better and safer, but 

also wants what is best for 

ratepayers. 

He said its next step is 

to discuss the issue with 

neighbouring councillors, 

such as the Ashburton and 

Waimakariri district councils. 

“They’re a similar size and 

have similar size infrastructure. 

Whether there are any synergies 

or any benefits from looking at 

some sort of amalgamation or 

shared services,” Cr Miller said. 

Mr Ward said the 

Government will make the final 

decision on the management of 

water, and the time frame will 

depend on the expected Cabinet 

decision over the next month. 

“But it is likely this will 

include a number of high-level 

options identified for further 

work,” Mr Ward said 

These will then be further 

discussed with councils and 

worked on through 2019.”

TRAIN CAUSES BLAZE 

A malfunction in the brakes of a 

train caused a fire which covered 

a 5km area at about 7.30pm last 

Tuesday. Firefighters were called 

to extinguish the scrub fire near 

the train tracks on West Coast 

Rd. Kirwee chief fire officer 

Stuart Jones said crews from 

Kirwee, Darfield, West Melton 

and Rolleston attended the blaze 

which took about an hour to put 

out. 

BEACH FIRE 

Southbridge firefighters took two 

hours to extinguish a blaze on the 

beach at the end of Smiths Rd just 

before 5pm last Monday. Chief 

fire officer Donald McMillan said 

it started with people burning 

driftwood on the beach. The fire 

caused no damage or injuries.

world of fashion, she owned the

for a decade, selling it last year. 

She’s also the head of the 

wardrobe team for CentreStage 

Rolleston and she’s about to finish 

her diploma in floristry. 

Her Touchy Feely design is 

entered in the Sow’s Ear category 

of the competition, where 

designers are given the same 

materials to use. 

“I really like it because it 

means you all start from the 

same place and you all have the 

same stuff and you all use your 

own creativity to make something 

completely different,” Mrs 

Hollands said. 

Co-organiser Kim Strange 

said this year’s competition will 

be “that much more of a step-up 

from last year.” 

“We’re all really excited about 

it. The amount of tickets sold is 

huge so it’s been nice to see it’s 

providing an event that’s met a 

need,” Mrs Strange said. 

She said Saturday’s show is 

different to last year’s as it will 

have a raised stage, more lighting 

and sound and gold and 

silver tables. 

Those set to hit the catwalk 

range in age from six-years-old 

to models in their 70s. 

Mrs Strange said there will be 

a range of food and drinks for 

sale at the event including wine 

from company 27 Seconds. 27 

Seconds gives 100 per cent of its 

profits to Hagar, a charity which

Mine noise prompts concerns

NOISE AT night from a large 

mine in Coalgate has prompted 

concerns from nearby residents. 

A Malvern Community 

Board report said that residents 

have noticed the Canterbury 

Coal Mine, located on Bush 

Gully Rd, is 

getting louder 

at night. 

But in the 

past year the 

district council 

has only 

received three

investigated and no breaches 

identified. 

Whitecliffs Township Committee 

chairwoman Jodie 

Thompson said a lot of residents 

have expressed concern and it 

has been contacting noise control 

at the district council. 

She said she doesn’t mind 

the noise in the day but at 

night time she “hears crashing 

sounds.” 

“It disturbs the peaceful 

atmosphere of the place which 

is why most people move out 

here,” she said.

the township and needs to be 

addressed. 

One resident cannot sleep at 

night as a result of the noise, he 

said. 

It comes as a resource application 

from Bathurst Resources to 

increase its heavy vehicle movements 

is currently on hold. 

It lodged a resource consent 

to increase its coal truck and 

trailer movements to an average 

of 225 per week, with a maximum 

of up to 320 movements 

in January. 

District council planning 

manager Jesse Burgess said it is 

currently discussing the scope 

of the application with Bathurst 

representatives.

manager Damian Spring said 

the application is a result of 

increased demand in the Canterbury 

region. 

It is required to meet projected 

sales demand for coal, 

including to supply to milk 

processing sites owned and operated

with affected parties on Bush 

Gully Rd and Malvern Hills Rd. 

“The feedback we have got 

is from neutral to happy with 

what we are proposing,” he said.

bit more than just a Spitfire 

pilot who served in 

World War 2. 

His father was 

Alan McGregor

He died on September 5,

a vast improvement since police 

spoke to patrons at The Famous 

Grouse Hotel last week. The club 

operates the hotel. 

Mr Townsend said he had also 

noticed an increase in the demand 

for the hotel’s two courtesy vans. 

Senior Constable Andy Williamson 

received a loud round of 

applause recently after warning 

patrons of the dangers of drink 

driving. 

“This hotel and others in 

the district will continue to be 

targeted by police. Police don’t 

want to apprehend and prosecute 

drunk drivers. We would rather 

prevent them from driving. However, 

we will do whatever we can 

to prevent unnecessary death and 

trauma on our roads. We make no 

apology for this.”

Miss Bell underwent six 

months of chemotherapy and 

radiation treatment before being 

given a clean bill of health. 

“That’s had an impact on who 

I am,” she said. 

Miss Bell says it was a “shock” 

losing her long hair and something 

her pupils also had to get 

used to. 

A learn to skate session last 

year saw the then 37-year-old 

take her first ride in the ambulance 

after she fell and broke her 

back. 

“I had watched lots of people 

hit the ground and get back up 

. . . I was finding it really hard 

to breathe and I started getting 

numbness in my hands and the 

pain wasn’t going,” she said. 

Miss Bell had “very limited” 

movement for six weeks and 

had to take a term-and-a-half 

off teaching to recover from the 

accident. 

It was a “bit of a blow” for 

Miss Bell, who had recently 

completed two half marathons 

and was enjoying getting into 

running. 

“I could still do the pin-up 

stuff which is part of what got 

me through it too,” she said. 

Miss Bell started dressing in 

vintage-inspired clothing about 

two years ago and says it’s had a 

positive impact on her life. 

“I’ve made lots of friends, I’ve 

learnt to style myself, I love the 

fashion and I feel really good 

about who I am and I’ve come a 

long way and this [the competition] 

is kind of my next step, my

Although it’s her first time 

entering, Miss Bell watched the

3 and 4 as part 

of The Very Vintage Day Out.

elements of the early 1940s and 

late 1960s. 

The top 10 finalists will 

compete in four categories, 

day wear, beachwear, talent 

and evening wear, over the two 

days. 

Miss Bell plans to sing, 

accompanied by her partner 

John Wood on guitar, for the 

talent part of the competition. 

The top four finalists will then 

be selected and asked further 

questions before a winner is 

decided. 

Prizes, including vouchers 

and goody bags, will be given to 

the winner, runner-up, people’s 

choice and picture perfect.

Leeston teen ready 

to tackle issues in 

Youth Parliament 

LEESTON’S Katelyn 

Twiss has been selected 

as Selwyn’s Youth MP for 

next year. 

The 16-year-old was 

chosen from seven finalists 

by a panel including 

Selwyn MP Amy Adams, 

Mayor Sam Broughton 

and district councillor 

Craig Watson. 

The finalists had to give 

a 5min presentation on 

local and national issues 

and then answer questions 

from the judges. 

Ms Adams said she 

is looking forward to 

working with Katelyn 

during her term as a Youth 

MP, which runs from 

March 1 until August 31. 

“Katelyn will be 

representing Selwyn at 

the Youth Parliament in 

Wellington on July 16 and 

17, and I am sure she will 

do a fantastic job,” she 

said. 

Ms Adams praised all of 

the finalists for having the 

courage to put themselves 

forward and present their 

opinions to the panel. 

“I was thoroughly 

impressed by the 

passion and knowledge 

which all of the finalists 

demonstrated in their 

presentations,” she said. 

“These are all young 

people who are motivated 

to make a difference in 

their communities and I 

commend them for their 

efforts.” 

Katelyn, who is a 

year 12 student at 

Ellesmere College, said 

she was very excited to 

have been chosen and was 

looking forward to the 

experience. 

She is already active 

in the community as a 

member of the Selwyn 

Youth Council and 

is a national leader 

for Students Against 

Dangerous Driving.

Dreamcoat. 

The show will hit the 

stage next month at Rolleston 

School, which is set to 

be transformed into the 

land of Egypt, with a cast 

of 80 people. 

Joseph and the 

Amazing Technicolor 

Dreamcoat is celebrating 

its 50 th year so CentreStage 

Rolleston jumped at the 

chance to perform the 

well-known musical by 

Andrew Lloyd Webber and 

Tim Rice. 

Described as a rock disco, 

the show has won many 

awards over the years and 

audience members will 

delight in well known 

songs such as Any Dream 

Will Do and Close Every 

Door and even a surprise 

element of Elvis. 

Central to the vision of 

CentreStage Rolleston was 

the ability to offer quality 

theatre to the growing 

community of Rolleston. 

The creative team for the 

debut show consists of Phil 

Dean, Darren Weber and 

Anna Randall. The show 

includes many families, 

not just on stage, but also 

in the 15-piece orchestra, 

set design and build, 

costumes, lighting, sound, 

marketing, stage crew and 

general production. 

CentreStage Rolleston’s 

nine performances of the 

show will take place at the 

school on 11 Tennyson St, 

between November 15 and

Growth in the Selwyn District 

is proceeding at a rate which 

prior to the 2010 earthquake 

would have been thought to be 

the stuff of an over-imaginative 

mind. 

While the influx of all these 

people has helped to create an atmosphere 

of prosperity with the 

ability to provide local employment 

it does have a cost. 

To the majority of us the first 

easily seen downside is the massive 

jump in rates. 

More people means a greater 

demand for more public facilities, 

these in turn drive a 

demand for high maintenance 

costs. 

So which is better, a lower population 

with fewer requirements 

and fewer job opportunities for 

the young and lower running 

costs or a larger population with 

higher costs but better facilities 

and job opportunities. 

PLANNING: Weedons Residents’ Association secretary Gary 

Doyle says small towns which were planned for the district 

changed following the September 4, 2010, earthquake. 

There is no easy solution, to 

make a thriving community you 

need people, this drives the need 

for providing the recreational/ 

education/employment opportunities 

for them. 

Currently the District Plan is 

coming under the microscope 

again, and this needs to be carefully 

worked through to try and 

arrive at a solution for today and 

for the future. 

In the past plans had been 

drawn up to do this, however, 

the unforeseen happened, earthquakes. 

The results are that small 

townships that had been planned 

for, with easily managed populations 

have been put under unforeseen 

pressures. 

Past plans with a very long 

term plan to gradually increase 

the facilities were overtaken in 

a virtual blink of an eye. Now 

is the time to down with a far 

better grasp of what is going to 

be required for the future and do 

the planning. 

However, there is a drawback, 

the massive increase in population 

has placed as I said earlier a 

strain on resources. 

This can be overcome very 

quickly with huge increases in 

rates, a quick fix some would say, 

but for many on fixed incomes 

the financial burden may just be 

too much. 

Any community to be 

successful needs a good crosssection 

of age groups, and some 

of proposed increases could well 

cause considerable hardship for 

the elderly. To be fair, the council 

is going to be damned if they do 

and damned if they don’t.

I see the district council is 

going to potentially review 

the lighting for the pedestrian 

crossing on Gerald St outside 

the Famous Grouse Hotel in 

Lincoln. 

What also needs to be 

urgently reviewed is the street 

car parking directly next to the 

crossing. The Famous Grouse 

courtesy van is usually parked 

right next to the crossing 

(west side) making it virtually 

impossible for motorists 

travelling along Gerald St 

from west to east to see anyone 

standing at the crossing. 

It is especially bad for kids 

coming home from school – I 

see kids all the time having to 

basically edge themselves out 

into the middle of the road past 

the van in order for motorists to 

see them. Not good.

its changed over time 

I ATTENDED CultureFest, 

along with my colleague 

Melissa Lee, the National 

Party spokeswoman for ethnic 

communities. 

This event was held at the 

Lincoln Event Centre, and 

was organised by the district 

council, in partnership with 

the Christchurch Multicultural 

Council. 

As has been the case in previous 

years, it was a very successful 

day, showcasing music and 

dance performances, arts and 

crafts and delicious food from a 

variety of different cultures. 

Over the past decade, Selwyn 

has been one of the fastest growing 

regions in New Zealand. 

Between 2008 and 2017 the 

population of Selwyn District 

grew by 55.2 per cent, which 

means an additional 21,100 people 

moved into the region. This is 

roughly the same as adding the 

population of the town of Ashburton, 

which is around 20,000, 

to Selwyn. 

While many of those people 

who have moved to Selwyn 

have come from suburban

regions of the South Island, we 

are also welcoming newcomers 

from around the globe. 

Historically, Selwyn has been 

less ethnically diverse than 

other regions around New 

Zealand, with over 90 per cent 

of our residents identifying as 

European, and this can make it 

more challenging for those from 

different backgrounds to feel at 

home here. 

However, we are seeing 

increasing diversity amongst 

our younger population with 

80 per cent of our school pupils 

here in Selwyn recorded as 

European, 10 per cent Maori, 

4.5 per cent Asian, 1.8 per cent 

Pacific Peoples and 1.2 per cent 

Middle Eastern, Latin American 

or African. 

For people coming to live in 

Selwyn from other countries and 

other cultural backgrounds, and 

for whom English is not a first 

language, I can only imagine 

how challenging it must be to 

adjust to life in a strange new 

place. 

However, I hope for those of 

you who have experienced this 

that you have felt warmly welcomed 

by the local community. 

From my own perspective it 

seems that here in Selwyn we 

do generally do a great job of 

welcoming newcomers from all 

backgrounds and helping people 

feel part of our communities. 

CultureFest is about celebrating 

our region’s growing 

diversity, learning about our 

neighbours and experiencing the 

amazing richness of culture in its 

broadest sense. 

This is one of my favourite 

events on the Selwyn calendar 

and I am sure that many others 

feel the same, so if you missed it 

this year, make sure you put it on 

your must-do list for next year.

COBWEB SPIDERS are known 

as Theridiidae, the family that 

includes the poisonous katipo 

spiders. 

The most common species in 

this family is the native diamond 

comb-footed spider, Cryptachaea 

veruculata. 

It is believed that this species 

may have been a natural 

introduction by ballooning 

across the Tasman Sea on silk 

threads. 

Males and females have a 

body length of 2mm and 4mm 

SMALL: Pattern on its abdomen lends itself to the name of the

Playcentre celebrates 

DUNSANDEL Playcentre is 

celebrating 50 years of learning 

and growing. 

The minutes of 1968, kept in 

a small, perfect notebook, in 

delicate and flowing script, note 

fundraising ideas of a cabaret 

night which raised $357. 

There were folk singers, Hawaii 

torch dancers and a teen’s 

dance for the cabaret which 

aimed to fundraise for equipment 

at the playcentre. 

They also detail congratulations 

on new births, that 63 gallons 

of beer was needed for the 

cabaret and that the Anglican 

Church had approved the use 

of the Sunday School hall for 

the playcentre at the rate of $1 a 

session. 

Sessions commenced, babies 

were born, roll numbers and 

days offered went up and down, 

office bearers changed hands 

and speakers were invited to do 

talks on progressive women, 

make-up and deportment and 

the role of adults with young 

children. 

In 1978 the playcentre moved 

to its current location on Irvines 

Rd with a Government subsidised 

purchase of a relocated 

prefab classroom. 

Now, with a roll of 12 and 

dedicated volunteers at the 

helm, its Monday sessions are 

buzzing, fresh and full of children 

and family learning and 

growing together.

Poppies mark history 

in Leeston 

Take action on distraction 

What kinds of distractions do you encounter while driving? 

There are many things that can distract you from driving safely – 

your passengers, eating food, talking on a hands-free phone, or 

taking your eyes off the road to look at something. 

A recent Ministry of Transport crash report showed that in 2016, 

diverted attention was identified as a contributing factor in a total of 

1,097 crashes in New Zealand. 

These crashes resulted in 22 deaths and 210 serious injuries. 

Selwyn District Council Road Safety Coordinator Peter Daly says 

drivers need to take responsibility when driving and to ensure their 

eyes are always on the road. 

“Nobody ever thinks a crash is going to happen to them, until it 

happens,” he says. 

“The best advice anyone can have when driving is to just drive – 

leave the cellphone, food, coffee and any other distractions until 

the car is turned off. If we are distracted when someone else makes 

a mistake in front of us, we have far less chance to avoid being 

involved in a crash or incident.” 

Another salute to Selwyn’s past has been added to the streets around the cenotaph at Leeston. 

As part of the Poppy Places campaign, a poppy has been added to the signs for Gallipoli Street 

and Messines Street, which border the township’s landmark cenotaph. 

Both streets trace their origins to the Leeston war memorial, erected in 1924 to commemorate 

soldiers from Ellesmere County who lost their lives during the First World War. 

Many Territorial soldiers from the Ellesmere area volunteered to serve in the New Zealand 

Expeditionary Force when it was established at the outbreak of the First World War in August 

1914. It was these initial volunteers, and those who followed in the reinforcement contingents in 

1915, who fought during the Gallipoli campaign. 

The battle of Messines in June 1917 was one of the NZ Division’s greatest successes on the 

Western Front, in that it achieved all of its objectives in the attack battle plan. However, the 

division sustained 3,700 casualties, including 700 killed. Most likely there would have been 

soldiers from Ellesmere County involved. 

Council Asset Engineer Transportation, Mark Chamberlain, says the historic value of the poppy, 

street name and location made the addition an easy decision. 

“As a growing district it is important to remember the people who have come before us and the 

sacrifices they made. 

“There are a number of families still in the Ellesmere area who would have had family members 

fight in the First World War, and this gesture is about helping to maintain the knowledge of what 

our forefathers went through,” Mr Chamberlain says. 

The cenotaph and the naming of Gallipoli Street and Messines Street have provided the people of 

the district with a permanent focal point to remember and commemorate the sacrifice members of 

their community made during the campaign.

Out with the old, in with the new 

Nearly 250 new LED lights have been installed on streets around Selwyn, as the district moves away 

from older street lights to brighter, more efficient technology. 

Across the district the Council is in the process of replacing 5,800 existing lights with the new LED models. 

The replacement work started in the middle of 2018, and is expected to take three years to complete. 

Support from the NZTransport Agency has been a key factor, financing 85% of the $3.3 million project. 

Normally NZTA funds 50% of local roading projects, but wanted to work alongside local councils to help 

them switch over to LED lighting. 

The changeover started around Leeston, as its lighting stock is among the oldest in the district. 

Asset Manager Transportation Andrew Mazey says some of the lights in Leeston have been in place for 

more than 50 years. 

“We believe that some of the lights in the area haven’t been replaced since they were originally put in, 

and may date back to World War II”, Mr Mazey says. 

The new lights are being installed in stages, with older settlements around Selwyn taking priority, due to 

the age of the lighting infrastructure. 

Mr Mazey says Lincoln and Rolleston will be the last areas to have the upgrades. 

“With a substantial number of new subdivisions in Lincoln and Rolleston, the two townships have had a 

head start in the switch over, as new subdivisions have to install LED lighting. 

The new lights offer significantly cheaper running and maintenance costs. 

Capacity building workshops

from 5.30–7.30pm at the Lincoln Event Centre. The workshop will 

cover the basics of volunteer management including recruitment, 

retention and recognition.

of Hollywood Day at the Busy 

Bumbles holiday programme. 

The programme continues

THE CANTERBURY Country 

under-18 rugby team had their 

best ever finish to a South Island 

tournament on Saturday. 

The under-18s finished fourth, 

capping off a good South Island 

tournament week for Country agegroup 

teams with the under-16s 

winning the plate final in Nelson 

and the under-48kg team crowned 

back-to-back champions. 

The under-48kg team went 

unbeaten at their tournament last 

week, taking down Nelson 31-5 in 

the decider at Belfast. 

The under-18 team lost their 

third v fourth play-off to Tasman 

33-26 at Kaiapoi. They had a 32-all 

draw with Canterbury Metro Black 

and a 46-41 win over Tasman to 

make the top four. 

Under-18 coach Glen Dunseath 

said in spite of limited training, the 

squad did an excellent job. 

“Country rugby at this agegroup 

has had a heck of a year with 

Rangiora and Lincoln (Combined) 

doing so well in the UC Championship 

and us making top four for 

the first time,” he said. 

“With 11 of the squad returning 

next year, hopefully this is something 

we can build on.” 

Dunseath said all of the agegroup 

results suggested country 

rugby is in a strong place at most 

age levels.

PREBBLETON Rugby Club 

president Jeromy Knowler 

believes his individual 

recognition comes from the years 

of hard work put in by people 

behind the scenes. 

Mr Knowler was named 

volunteer of the year at the 

Ellesmere Rugby Sub Union 

awards night. 

He said the award was a 

massive honour and recognition 

of how far the club has come 

thanks to a number of people 

over the past five years. 

“I originally wasn’t going to 

go but my wife said that I should 

and as they read out the award, I 

sat there and realised it had been 

a bit of set up,” he said. 

“I was very humbled to receive 

it.” 

He has been part of the club’s 

back room since 2003 after 

moving to Prebbleton. 

“I only had half a season 

playing low level senior rugby for 

them in 1999,” he said

In 2004, he started coaching 

at the junior level. By 2007, he 

was the junior club captain and 

eventually made his way to vicepresident 

before taking over the 

top job at the 2014 annual general 

meeting. 

“We’ve always had strong 

junior numbers but there were 

tough times at the senior level,” 

he said. “Four or five years ago, 

we were seriously considering 

whether we could continue to 

have a division one team. 

“Fortunately we had guys who 

stepped up and prevented that 

from happening, and slowly but 

surely, we were able to create 

some depth. And this past season 

making the playoffs has shown 

we were on the right track.” 

Mr Knowler said the senior 

rugby culture was something 

the entire club had tried to 

improve. 

“We’ll cook them a meal each 

week and sit down and have a 

chat with them,” he said, 

“It’s been great to be able to 

sit with our players and find out 

who they are on a more personal 

level.” 

Mr Knowler said he wants to 

ensure the club remains in good 

stead ahead of its centenary 

which will be held over Easter 

weekend next year.

Oxford’s lower order held their 

nerve to beat Sefton by three 

wickets, chasing down their

THE ELLESMERE College 

senior girls basketball team 

produced their best ever result 

at the national tournament on 

Thursday, finishing second in 

Palmerston North, 

They were the only South 

Island school across all the 

grades to earn a medal during 

tournament week. 

The team ended up losing the 

final 91-70 to Manukau. 

That match came after a 

pulsating semi-final against Te 

Aroha College which Ellesmere 

won 59-57. 

Coach Josh Thompson said 

experienced players like Paris 

Nurse and Megan Ellis helped 

steady the team at crucial 

moments. 

“You need that kind of 

experience in tournament 

basketball,” he said. 

“Those girls have all been there 

multiple times and it helps our 

younger players cope with the 

week at the end of what has been 

a pretty long season.” 

Ellesmere College also finished 

second at the single A South 

Island tournament for smaller 

schools last month. 

Thompson said he was 

delighted with how his team 

responded to the pressure against 

Te Aroha College but they 

could not match it against the 

height of the opposition in the 

final. 

“When one of the players is 

six foot three (1.92m), it makes it 

tough,” he said. 

“We tried to do what we could 

to combat it, but it didn’t quite 

happen.” 

Thompson said in spite of 

four year 13 pupils leaving the 

team, there were seven players in 

years 9 and 10 who attended the 

tournament. 

He hopes this will ensure any 

rebuilding of the team would 

be swift so they can remain 

competitive next year. 

Milligan eyes up 

endurance series 

after tough Bathurst 


PREBBLETON’S Jack Milligan 

has set his sights on the final 

round of the South 

Island endurance 

series at the weekend 

after a frustrating 

three races at Mt 

Panorama. 

Milligan was racing 

in the Australian 

Toyota 86 series at 

Bathurst from Friday 

to Sunday, but had no 

luck at all in spite of 

having a car capable 

of quick times. 

He was held up during his 

qualifying lap on Friday, which 

meant he qualified for race one

forward,” he said. 

“We had the speed but 

couldn’t maximise it with the

Little River Band to headline festival

Little River Band will return to 

New Zealand to headline Selwyn 

Sounds on March 2. 

The band is known for a string 

of instantly recognisable hits 

and was described by Eagles 

founding member Glenn Frey 

as “the best singing band in the 

world.” 

Total worldwide album sales 

and digital downloads of the 

band’s music now top 30 million 

and the group was the very first 

to have had top 10 hits for six 

consecutive years. 

It will be the first time the 

current line-up has toured here 

since the introduction of new 

rhythm and lead guitarist Colin 

Whinnery in February.

Business growth prompts 

move to bigger premises 

After a successful six years growing 

their Jones Road Auto business, owners 

Nigel and Lisa Fleck are moving to 

larger premises. 

“With the growth of Rolleston 

township our business has expanded 

and we have now outgrown the site at 

Jones Road,” Lisa says. 

“We have bought the land and are 

building new premises on the corner of 

Hoskyns Rd and Iport Rd. The building 

will be nearly twice the size of our

are on the lookout for fully trained 

mechanics to join the team.

Haval H9 engineered for life in the rough

I LIKE to see vehicles used for 

the purpose for which they were 

designed. 

When I got home from picking 

up a Haval H9 I crawled underneath 

to have a look at its suspension 

and driveline design. While 

I was under there I noticed that 

the evaluation car had been well 

used, there were a few battle scars, 

obvious signs it had done a lot of 

off-road work. 

That’s a good thing, for the 

Haval H9 is a definite off-road 

vehicle, it has high ground clearance 

(206mm), a live rear axle 

located by coil springs, a low 

ratio transfer case, and several 

electronic drive modes to cater 

for any loose surface track – mud, 

snow and sand. There is also a 

genuine low ratio for when the 

going gets really tricky. 

This is all packaged in what 

Haval call an All-Terrain Control 

System, it can be manipulated 

through the turn of a consolemounted 

dial, and when it’s time 

to head home from the high 

country jaunt there’s even a sport 

mode so that highway performance 

is maximised. 

There is a lot kit in the H9, and 

if you are thinking that it rivals 

say, Toyota’s Land Cruiser and 

Prado, you’d be right, there are 

many similarities, even to some 

of the luxury four-wheel-drive 

brands such as those out of the 

Land-Rover stable. But instead of 

an outlay of over six figures, the 

Chinese-built Haval H9 lists from 

just $43,990. 

The evaluation car was a highspec 

Ultra model, and it sits at 

$47,990. In terms of specification 

for that price it is simply daunting, 

it wants for nothing and 

there is a definite feeling of luxury 

through and through. There is so 

much kit on it that comprehensive 

detailing is impossible. But 

it’s fair to say that if you want a 

large seven-seat sport utility vehicle 

that has all the bells and whistles, 

then H9 won’t disappoint. 

Incidentally, Haval is a company 

which is part of the giant Great 

HAVAL H9: Large sport utility vehicle from China. 

Wall conglomerate, 

There’s a short off-road track I often 

use for serious four-wheel-drive 

vehicles, so I presented it to the H9, 

but because the weather was dry 

and the track hard there was little 

challenge. At the end of the track 

there is a steep incline, but it, too, 

presented little difficulty. 

Even though the H9 is capable 

in those conditions, it also imparts 

a serious feeling of luxury 

and comfort. The suspension – 

double wishbone up front – has 

soft spring and damper rates, any 

bumps are fully absorbed, and the 

rugged nature of the rear is a well 

proven formula that if a live axle 

is located well you get both good 

articulation and body control. 

Up front the H9 is driven by 

a 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol 

engine. While it is far from the 

norm in a big sport utility vehicle, 

don’t be thinking it is underwhelming. 

It is a turbocharged 

unit with a high power output of 

180kW. More importantly, it has 

a solid 350Nm of torque available 

all of the way from 1800rpm to 

4500rpm. Coupled to an eightspeed 

automatic transmission, 

the combination provides a solid 

form of energy all through the rev 

band, there’s never a point where 

you think it is not working as well 

as it should. 

Sure, acceleration off the mark 

isn’t rapid, a standstill 100km/h 

time of 11.3 sec is largely due to 

the weight of the big seven-seater, 

it’s quite tubby at 2230kg. All that 

aside, when the H9 gets rolling 

and that turbocharger is boosting 

strongly there is good mid-range 

urgency, a 80km/h to 120km/h 

overtaking time of 6.3sec can be 

expected. 

It also travels smoothly, the H9 

road manners are impeccable, 

ride comfort is strong, and when 

it comes time to negotiating 

those tricky high-country corners 

there is definite steering feel and 

reasonable accuracy. 

The H9 is tall at 1.9m, and 

there’s no way the suspension 

could totally combat body movement, 

gravitational forces are arrested 

as well as the chassis design 

will allow, but you do notice there’s 

a lot of vehicle to get through a 

corner. 

Huge Kumho tyres (265/60 x 

18in) do their bit to maintain direction, 

which helps, and it’s fair 

to say the big H9 isn’t disgraced 

handling-wise, it would compete 

fairly with its competition. 

The New Zealand distributors 

for Haval claim a 10.9-litre per 

100km/h (26mpg) combined 

cycle rating for the H9. 

That figure sits well with the 

fuel usage readout on the dash 

display during my time with the 

evaluation car, it was showing 

around 12l/100km (24mpg) when 

I took the car back to the dealership. 

That, along with an instantaneous 

reading of 7.6l/100km

On the subject of figures, Haval 

also claim a 2500kg braked trailer 

tow rating. 

The H9 was the second car of 

two from Haval that I have had 

back-to-back. Both it and the H2 

left a good impression in terms of 

build quality and overall performance. 

However, most of all, the entire 

range reeks of affordability, the 

brand is a way to get into a new 

sport utility vehicle without 

breaking the bank. 

Kiwis tend to buy on price, and 

that being the case I can see the 

nameplate going from strength to 

strength here.

Time of year to think tomatoes

IT’S THAT time of year again, 

tomato time. 

Each year when I come to 

share my tips and tricks on my 

favourite crop I come across 

things I didn’t know. Like, did 

you know that the first tomatoes 

in Europe were yellow varieties? 

Over time breeders crosspollinated 

tomatoes to breed red 

cultivars. 

Anyway, now that most of the 

frosts have packed up, and the 

days and nights are considerably 

warmer, tomatoes can be planted. 

If you live in a pocket where the 

odd late frost can appear this 

month, hold off planting yours 

for a few weeks – unless they are 

going into pots or tubs, then you 

can tuck them somewhere warm 

if need be. 

Garden centres are jam-packed 

with plants in all shapes and 

sizes. Small seedlings are in 

punnets, priced up between $4 

and $5 each, or there are plenty as 

individual plants, varying in price 

depending on size and whether 

or not they have been grafted. A 

grafted tomato has a phenomenal 

growth rate and generally 

produces a larger plant, therefore 

more tomatoes. You don’t need to 

plant as many grafted tomatoes 

because they produce more fruit. 

THE BASICS 

Sun, sun & more sun 

If you cannot find a spot in full 

sun away from blustery winds, you 

can forget about growing 

a decent crop. All-day sun will 

produce the best crop; a few hours 

in the shade is okay, but they need 

at least half a day in full sun. 

SOIL MATTERS 

When planting in the ground, 

blend in compost or tomato mix 

first. This enables the soil to hold 

on to more moisture. At this time 

I blend in my tomato fertiliser, 

too, then water the soil well. If 

you can, do this a week before 

you put the plants in the ground. 

FOOD FIRST 

Tomatoes are greedy beggars; 

TANGY: Make sure to give your tomatoes plenty of support. 

they just love food, particularly 

tomato food which is blended 

to promote healthy roots, strong 

flower formation and fruit 

development. This specialty 

fertiliser is like a multi-vitamin for 

tomatoes and does not contain as 

much nitrogen as general fertilisers 

do. Too much nitrogen in the soil 

promotes more leaves as opposed 

to flowers, which is not what we 

want in tomatoes or other fruit 

crops such as chillies, eggplants or 

zucchini. A bag of tomato food will 

last you a season or two. 

TUBS, TROUGHS & 

PLANTERS 

Tomatoes are a good option for 

growing in pots and containers. 

Big is best when it comes to the 

size of container, as they suck 

up water and nutrients at rate of 

knots. Therefore, the plant needs 

to be able to develop a large root 

system to supports its growth 

habit. The potting mix needs to 

be top notch, too, with plenty of 

fertiliser and an ability to hold 

onto ample amounts of water. 

Suppliers make it easy and make 

specific tomato mixes, which 

you’ll find easily in the shops. If 

you wanted to make your own, 

blend equal parts of compost, 

well-rotted manure and grit for 

the base, then work in tomato 

fertiliser prior to planting. The 

risk with homemade mixes are 

weeds and the potential that they 

can ‘heat up’ if the compost or 

manure isn’t fully mature. 

SUPPORT 

Most tomatoes require staking 

to support the stem, which will 

carry the weight of the crop as 

it develops. Staking also helps 

keep the fruit off the ground. 

New dwarf and ground-covering 

varieties don’t need this extra 

support, however. Choose a 

big fat stake or use a couple of 

bamboo canes. 

HOW TO GROW TOMATOES 

IN A STRAW BALE 

This season, as I have a limited 

amount of soil space in which to 

grow tomatoes, I have decided to 

grow a few in pea-straw bales. A 

couple of gardening friends do it 

and they suggested I try it. So far 

so good. 

1. Select your sunny tomotogrowing 

spot, bearing in mind 

that once the bales become wet 

they are not that easy to move. 

2. Hydrate the bale of straw. 

This takes about 

a week of watering it once a day. 

3. Sit the bale on its side and 

remove about 

10 handfuls of straw from the 

centre of the bale to make a hole, 

leaving the sides intact. Combine 

tomato mix and tomato fertiliser 

and put this into the hole you 

have created. 

4. Water and leave overnight to 

dry out. 

5. The following morning, plant 

your tomato – and, if you like, 

some companions such 

as parsley and calendula. 

Mine has been growing for a 

month now, tucked up next to 

the barn in which I live. It looks 

healthy and is forming flowers 

and setting fruit, so fingers 

crossed it works. I am going to 

try growing pumpkins using this 

method, too! 

CROP FAILURE 

When things go wrong you can 

normally attribute it with a few 

main things: 

Stress, through a lack of 

hydration, is the cause of most 

of the problems with tomatoes. 

Once plants wilt and begin to 

collapse numerous pests and 

diseases can and will attack a 

weak plant. Hence water is a 

lifeline for tomatoes. The trick is 

to water them deeply once or 

twice a week, rather than a 

little every day, especially when 

planted in the ground. In pots 

and containers, they will dry 

out quicker, but in the ground, 

you want to encourage the roots 

to bury themselves deeply into 

the cooler earth where water 

is more available. Shallow or 

light watering only encourages 

the feeder roots to stay near the 

surface where they often get burnt 

when the soil heats up in the sun. 

Poor plant nutrient is the 

other main cause of problems. 

If you expect your tomatoes to 

be athletes in the garden, and 

perform at their best, you need 

to feed them on a regular basis, 

especially when they are being 

grown in tubs and containers.

Buying a second home 

should you sell first or buy first? 

When it comes to upsizing or downsizing a property, 

homeowners are faced with a big decision – is it better to 

sell the existing home first, or buy the new place first? 

Real Estate Authority Chief Executive 

Kevin Lampen-Smith says there’s no 

‘right’ way to tackle it, but it’s important 

for homeowners to think carefully about 

their appetite for risk. Both options 

come with pros and cons, and their own 

unique set of challenges and pressures. 

“Buying first provides the luxury 

of time, meaning it’s possible to hunt 

for homes without a settlement date 

looming on the horizon. A buyer is 

able to consider as many houses as they 

like, move at their own pace and keep 

searching until they find the property 

that’s right for them and their family,” 

Lampen-Smith explains. 

While time might be on your side, 

your finances might not be. To secure 

the new home, buyers will need to come 

up with the funds for a deposit, which 

might be tricky if equity is tied up in the 

existing property. Buying first means 

there are suddenly double the bills to 

pay, including home insurance, rates 

and utility bills, as well as absorbing the 

cost of bridge financing in order to pay 

two mortgages. 

“The extra financial strain 

can sometimes mean sellers 

pressure themselves into 

setting a modest listing price 

for their existing house or 

accepting a lower offer, just 

to seal the deal quickly,” 

Lampen-Smith says. 

On the flip side, selling 

first can give homeowners a 

much clearer picture of their 

financial situation. Once 

the existing home is sold, you’ll know 

exactly how much cash you have to play 

with and what you can afford to buy.

“Speak to your bank or a mortgage 

advisor to get your finances in order 

and then build your support crew. For 

example, you’re going to need legal 

advice, a licensed real estate agent to sell 

your property, an insurer and a building 

inspector,” Lampen-Smith suggests. 

However, as your home is likely to 

be your biggest asset, it’s important to 

prepare for some hiccups along the way 

and have time or extra funds set aside
