SPORT Faye Baker Lewes’ number one number 1 Where were you when you heard the news Lewes had made it into the Women’s Super League? I was in London with my family, clock watching, waiting for the official announcement! Then up popped a message from the club to say WELCOME TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP! I danced round the room a few times! Is it a big step up in terms of the level of quality of opponents? And if so, in what way? There are no easy games at this level. The training schedule and intensity increase. Week in week out you are playing against internationals, and some players who have previously been full-time professionals. The games are faster, more physical and players have a huge amount of technical ability. Tell me what it was like losing 9-0 to Arsenal in the Continental Cup. Did Lewes play badly or did Arsenal just play well? Arsenal are a great side; they’re the kind of team you want to be facing week in week out if you want to be the best and at the top of your game. They moved the ball well and took their chances with ease. It was a learning curve for us, and one I’m sure looking back we are all grateful for. However, at the time I think I sulked for three days! What was said after the match and how did it feel to have a game (v Crystal Palace) so soon afterwards? How important was that 2-1 victory? It was hard not to feel downhearted [by the Arsenal result]: we had had a great start to the season and that was a big loss for us as a team. We are a close bunch and everyone pulled out the positives and tried to reflect and look at the bigger picture. Having a game just a few days after was exactly what we needed, to get it out of our systems and bounce back. Have you sacrificed your non-football career by playing at such a level? I have sacrificed a lot for football. I left law school to pursue my football career, I have also up and left my family and moved to Brighton. Football is extremely important to me and for me it comes first. Every day I want to be better than I was yesterday, and I’ll make whatever sacrifices I have to, to get there. I have one free evening a week after juggling a full-time job and training! What made you become a goalie in the first place? I initially played as a defender and signed for West Ham as one; however, our goalkeeper got injured and I was the one stupid enough to offer to stand in. I haven’t been let out since! Are goalkeepers a race apart? Keepers are a unique bunch: how many people would willingly stand and let people smash balls at them?
