Three exhibitions started up at the Jerwood in Hastings in late
October, which all run till Jan 6th. We mentioned the collaborative
work of Maggi Hambling with her artist friends Sebastian
Horsley, Sarah Lucas, Julian Simmons and Juergen Teller, on
in the main gallery, last month. In Vanishing Points upstairs, you
can see the thought-provoking work of Barbara Walker. She is
interested in highlighting issues of class, power, gender and race,
and has picked two paintings featuring black subjects from the
National Gallery (by Tiepolo and Giordano) and has juxtaposed
these with her own works, to examine the historical masterpieces
in a fresh context. Finally, while you’re at Hastings’ fine still-fresh
gallery, there’s a bit of light relief
with Quentin Blake’s Hats.
Also in Hastings this month,
you might want to check
out the work of latex artist
Michelle Mildenhall at the
See Spray Gallery, 9th-30th
November; while, at the Lucy Bell Gallery, there’s an exhibition
of Marilyn Stafford’s iconic fashion photographs, from Biba to
Chanel (27th Oct-17th Nov).
Finally, if you fancy a trip up Maresfield
way, Hendall Manor Barns are
holding the Hendall Arts Exhibition on
3rd-4th November with work by over
20 local artists and makers, including
garden sculptures, figurative bronzes,
resin sculptures, engravings, etchings,
impressions and oil paintings.
As usual, it’s worth a trip to Chichester to visit Pallant
House Gallery, hosting no fewer than six
shows through to the New Year. Highlights include
a collection of paintings by ‘Manchester Modernist’
Karl Hagedorn, works by Julian Trevelyan (see pg
84), the doll sculptures of Cathie Pilkington, and
some recent bequests of works by Keith Vaughan.
