INSPIRE SEMINAR PROGRAMME
MONDAY 3 SEPTEMBER
THE INSPIRATION THEATRE - P152
10:00– Precious Metal 3D Printing - An Introduction to Jewellery in the 21st Century |
10:45 Skill, Design & the Craft of Jewellery
The production of innovative jewellery directly from precious metal powders has recently burst onto the
manufacturing scene. Known as 3D printing or Additive Manufacturing where powdered precious
metal is melted layer by layer using a laser, this technology is being developed by Cooksongold (part
of the Heimerle & Meule group) at its facility in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. The technology
frees designers from the constraints of conventional manufacturing processes and enables the
creation of complex and beautiful parts that are ready to finish in a matter of hours. Parts can be
made light-weight, hollow and thus very cost-effective they can also be made with intricate
articulation which are highly customisable. The presentation will provide an introduction to the
technology and how the jewellery industry can now adopt the process as part of their supply chain.
David Fletcher, Cooksongold
11:30– Making Your Mark: How do we Ensure Jewellery is Irritation Free? | Skill, Design &
12:30 the Craft of Jewellery
According to the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergy network, more than 20% of
consumers suffer with Allergic Contact Dermatitis caused by adverse reactions to metal. That’s 20%
of the population that could be avoiding wearing fashion or fine jewellery due to metal sensitisation.
There is another way.
Marks & Spencer commissioned global base and precious metal experts, AnchorCert Analytical (Assay
Office Birmingham’s consumer product safety laboratory), to create a unique testing methodology that
would reduce the risk of allergic reactions caused by metal.
The result is DermaKind, a revolutionary testing methodology, proven to reduce the risk of ACD caused
by metal and now applied across all Marks & Spencer’s women’s Skin Kind Jewellery ranges.
Facilitator: Rachael Taylor, The Jewellery Cut and Rachael Taylor Writes
Panellists: Steve Hamon, Anchorcert; Dippal Manchanda, AnchorCert; Victoria Gallant, Marks &
13:00 – Understanding Coloured Diamonds | Skill, Design & the Craft of Jewellery
14:00 Deep blues, rich reds, and glorious greens are some of the rare and exotic colours that make up
the rainbow of what are often called ‘fancy-colour diamonds’. Highly specialised GIA gemmologists
grade these coloured diamonds according to GIA’s colour grading system, which ranges from faint to
fancy vivid. This presentation introduces the fascinating world of coloured diamonds and provides
insight into the GIA's coloured-diamond grading system.
Francesca Lawley, Gemological Institue of America (GIA)
14:30 – Changing Times: Turmoil in the Watch Industry and the Opportunity of Pre-Owned | The
15:15 Business Forum
The last 10 years have seen unprecedented change in the process of buying and selling watches
and little of it has been good news for the traditional high-street retailer. This seminar charts the
course of that change, looks at the impact that these changes have had on the traditional retail
model, and suggests ways that the rise of the pre-owned market may offer reasons for hope.
