DENTON PARK is again the
subject of controversy.
The Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
last week rejected an application
from the Hornby Rugby Football
Club to cover legal bills in their
campaign to keep Denton Park’s
reserve status.
Save Denton Park chairman
Mark Peters – who was at the
meeting – said voters would
remember the decision at next
year’s local body elections.
HRFU requested their full legal
bill of $1380 be covered.
The club refused to comment
to the Western News.
The Council Delegations Register
states that community boards
cannot grant money from its
discretionary response fund to
cover legal challenges against the
city council.
But board deputy chairwoman
Helen Broughton argued that the
board should ask the city council
for an exception and grant the
money to HRFU.
She was backed by board member
Debbie Mora.
“The reason I think it’s important
that council grants [the
money] if they will, is [because] on
this occasion the hearings panel
decided that the community was
correct and they did not wish to
give up the reserve status for Denton
Park, “ Ms Broughton said.
“They had to battle it from
August 2017 to May 2018. I think
it’s a reasonable, low-level request
for funding,” she said.
LTD
Ms Broughton and Ms Mora
lost the vote 6-2.
Board member and city
councillor Vicki Buck said: “The
LAST WEEK we reported on Halswell
Hornets’ Jeff Whittaker’s life membership
honour at the Canterbury Rugby League
awards.
This issue we have caught up with two
other awardees (page 11) who received recognition at the same
ceremony – Riccarton Knights’ Shane Tamatea (sportsman of
the year) and Tony Grenfell (volunteer of the year).
Tony, who is also a life member of Riccarton, was described
at the awards as “someone who lives and breathes rugby league
from the pre-season until the very end of the national season,
offering assistance every step of the way.”
Said Tony: “There are heaps of jobs and they all have to get
done,” he said.
A real club man so to speak.
Woolworths plans subdivision
Grand Designs
host to help
develop site
• By Anan Zaki
A SUPERMARKET chain
wants to build laneways and
“New York-style” apartments in
Halswell, designed by the host of
Grand Designs NZ.
Woolworths NZ, which own
grocery chains Countdown,
FreshChoice and Super Value,
lodged a resource consent
application for
a mixed-use
development at
a 21ha site at 201
Halswell Rd.
The design team
is led by Grand
Chris
Moller
Designs NZ host
Chris Moller.
Public
submissions opened on
Wednesday and will remain open
until November 28.
The residential part of
the development includes
248 dwellings, including 24
units of two level “New Yorkstyle”
apartments, a covered
swimming pool facility, extensive
landscaping and 3.1991ha of
reserve and stormwater detention
areas.
Said Countdown general
manager property Adrian
Walker: “In New York, these
[apartments] were conversions of
old brownstone factories but new
replica-style buildings typically
replicate the key characteristics
of weathered brick, high stud and
saw tooth roof.”
The commercial component
of the proposal includes a
Countdown supermarket,
medical centre, cafe, childcare
facility, retail space for 21
tenants, a tavern, 522 car
parks, covered outdoor spaces,
landscaping and lawn seating.
There are no groundwater
springs below the proposed site.
The company lodged the
resource consent application in
December last year.
In its application, Woolworths
said a dimension often missing in
contemporary suburbs is a sense
of community or collective life.
The vision for the project
includes a “village life” approach,
which will be encouraged by
lanes, bridleways and pocket
parks.
“The Halswell project is
already zoned for residential and
PLANNED: This 21ha site
on Halswell Rd is currently
covered in overgrown weeds
but could soon have a
subdivision with “New Yorkstyle”
apartments.
commercial as part of the larger
Halswell key activity centre
development to be built over the
next 25 years,” Mr Walker said.
This is not Woolworths NZ’s
first foray into a mixed-use
development. The company built
31 buildings in Vinegar Ln, in
Ponsonby, Auckland.
“We’re excited to bring a high
quality development to Halswell,”
Mr Walker said.
A construction management
plan is yet to be submitted.
Should the resource consent be
approved, construction would
start about a year after a design
and tender process.
INTERSECTION CHANGE
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board. The
The board voted restrictions
be placed at the road’s two
Kitchen fire destroys home
• By Sophie Cornish
A HOUSE fire which destroyed a
family home in Avonhead started
in the kitchen.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand were called to a property
in Kirkdale Pl, Avonhead around
1.30pm on October 29.
Fire investigator Darren Aiken
confirmed the fire was not suspicious
and started in the kitchen.
He could not confirm how it
started until the investigation was
complete.
However, Mr Aiken said the
fire highlights the need for people
to be careful with any heating or
hot materials in the house.
No one was injured in the fire.
“Unfortunately, we have had a
whole family displaced and lost
all their possessions,” said Mr
Aiken.
The Orion website said power
had been shut off to 15 houses in
the area and remained disconnected
after 4pm, as a result of
the fire.
On October 22, two homes in
Alvaston Drive, Halswell were
destroyed by a fire which started
from a heater being accidentally
turned on.
A couch was up against the
heater and caught alight.
Fire and Emergency NZ
spokesman Andrew Norris
said the two houses were joined
together and both received
“extensive damage.”
FIERCE: An accidental kitchen fire gutted this family home in
Avonhead.
Riccarton
bus lanes
in operation
NEW BUS lanes installed as part
of the Riccarton Rd upgrade are
now in operation.
The bus priority work helps
the 3000 people a day who board
buses in Riccarton, and people
passing through the area, reach
their destinations on time.
Christchurch City Council
transport operations manager
Steffan Thomas says the dedicated
bus lanes are integral to the
success of the city’s transport
network.
“It is important that other
vehicles keep clear of these bus
lanes so that everyone can arrive
at their destinations on time,” Mr
Thomas says.
“We all need to support the delivery
of an efficient and effective
public transport network across
the city, and dedicated lanes help
achieve that.”
The bus lanes will be enforced
through bus lane cameras.
“Motorists ignoring the rules
face a $150 fine if they are caught
wrongly using the bus lanes, while
those who park in the lanes can
receive a $60 fine, along with a
bill for towing costs,” Mr Thomas
says.
Quarry officials to front up
• By Anan Zaki
FULTON HOGAN officials will
front up in Templeton for the
first time tonight to discuss their
quarry proposal.
Since first announcing the
170ha quarry proposal in Templeton
and Weedons last year,
the company has steered clear of
Templeton.
The company
is planning
a series
of information
evenings from
tonight until
Thursday, in a
marquee next to
the Templeton
Garry Kilday Community
Centre.
Residents can hear the latest
information relating to the
quarry proposal and discuss
concerns with Fulton Hogan
technical experts.
Templeton Residents’ Association
chairman Garry Kilday
welcomed the move but called
for more.
“I would’ve preferred the way we
wanted it, if the whole community
is engaged.” Mr Kilday said.
“In a group people will ask
more questions,” he said.
He has not yet decided if he
will attend the information sessions.
Mr Kilday said Fulton Hogan
has previously not visited
Templeton.
Fulton Hogan South Island
general manager Craig Stewart
says it’s an opportunity for
residents to share their concerns
and hear from experts how the
company is planning to deal with
issues such as dust, truck movements
and water quality.
“We recognise and understand
that some of the residents are
concerned about the impact the
quarry might have on the community.”
“We have a lot of information
including the proposed site
layout, the latest technology
looking at issues like wind
direction and weather
monitoring, and new technology
on display like water fogging and
misting machines which stop any
dust leaving the site,” Mr Stewart
said.
He hoped hearing information
from experts will “allay any fears
they [residents] may have.”
•From page 1
After a heated 25min debate,
the board accepted a city council
staff recommendation to reject
the application on the basis it did
not have the power to grant the
money.
Ms Broughton said it would
have been a “show of good faith”
to the Hornby community to ask
the city council for an exception.
Mr Peters said it was “unfortunate”
that board members “could
not understand” Ms Broughton’s
amendment.
He described the meeting as
“very tense”.
“It was a telling meeting that
would paint a lot of pictures in
light of next year’s elections. That
was their one chance as a board to
show some good faith to the community
that they were embattled
with,” Mr Peters said.
The board also turned down another
funding application by the
Yaldhurst Environment Group –
as the HRFU application.
The environment group asked
for $37,000 to help cover it’s Environment
Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
Readers react to the
community boards’ catering
bill, footed by the ratepayer
Heather Wilkins – This has
to stop. They should take their
own food. My hubby goes to
work and takes his own smokos
and lunch just like most others
do. Why should I pay for
their food? They don’t pay for
my morning tea or lunch or
afternoon tea. Why should the
ratepayers pay? Get off the gravy
train and pay for it yourself.
Guess we won’t be seeing our
community board around the
community for a few weeks then.
Natasha Lott – I love the
comment it’s not fair to have people
sitting for two to three hours
with hunger pains, umm eat before
you go maybe. A few biscuits
and snacks every now and then
is fine but having full catering to
every meeting to avoid ‘hunger
pains’ is a little silly.
Sharren Wilson – Absolutely
should not be paid for out of
rates. Every time some CEO has
a meeting with another CEO
and associates . . . they delve into
ratepayers’ funds. With technology
the way it is they could have
meetings via Skype and conference
calling saving on airfares
and food. Stop the rot now. It’s
not necessary.
Maria Lee – Does this council
really not know how many
ratepayers on not on their side.
People we need to vote this council
out in the next election.
Fred Gear – I have absolutely
no problem whatsoever with
this. All the whingers are just
saddos who love to be part of the
chattering class that knock everything
that others deserve.
Tania Jones – A packet of
biscuits and a cuppa would suffice
for morning and afternoon
tea. Eat your breakfast and take
your lunchbox like every other
employee.
Karl Dean – I have no issue
with this but they should have
been making it more clear to the
public that it’s for everyone who
attends. They might get more
people there, and most meetings
for the organisations I am on
have some sort of supplied food
for a snack after the meeting. You
would be amazed at the amount
of productive conversation after a
meeting instead of everyone just
heading off.
Reuben Tekoeti-Mead –
When you look at the actual figure
between the different boards
per year its almost nothing.
People who think $50,000 is
enough to feed seven different
boards ‘lunch and smoko’ every
day for two years must be living
in an alternate universe and
clearly didn’t actually read the
whole article.
PT Patrick Enright – Man
$49,000 could feed hungry kids
for a year rather than corporates
who probably have good jobs in
the first place to even be able to
get on that board. But that’s the
council for you – feed the rich
before fixing the drains.
Paula Rose – Hunger pains
during a two to three-hour meeting
– eat before you go. And if you
are going to waste our rates on
food at your meetings please try
and make some healthier choices.
Seriously, cakes, biscuits, lollies . . .
it’s a meeting not a kids party.
Jonnie F. Omen – Two $20
bags of savouries every two to
three weeks is almost a grand.
Breaking it down like that it’s not
exactly a lot of money, just the big
figure looks like it is.
Lisa Hetherington – There
are a lot of volunteer committees
who also sit around for two to
three hours in meetings who have
to go hungry. Not to mention all
those who go hungry everyday. .
Nikki Macpherson – When
you spend public money you
need to be certain in your justification.
I’ve worked for a DHB.
We had to self pay our Christmas
function. That’s okay. The public
purse was better spent on meeting
more health needs.
Riccarton league stalwarts awarded
• By Jacob Page
TWO OF the Riccarton
Knights’ most influential people
got their moment of recognition
at the Canterbury Rugby League
awards.
Veteran senior player Shane
Tamatea was named sportsman
of the year, while Tony Grenfell
was named volunteer of the year.
Grenfell, who is a life member
of the club, was described at the
awards night as someone who
lives and breathes rugby league
from the pre-season until the
very end of the national season,
offering assistance every step of
the way.
Grenfell said he came to
the club in 2002 when his son
Dwayne wanted to play premiers
and has never left.
“I love the club [and] the
people and for me it’s become a
big part of my life.”
Grenfell is on the club
committee and has been the
premier team’s manager since
2005.
However, you’re just as likely
to see him sweeping the floors
or marking the field for a day’s
play.
“There are heaps of jobs and
they all have to get done,” he
said.
“If you want something done
right, you have to do it yourself.
It’s quite humbling to receive
an honour like that, it’s not
really what I do it for, but to
RECOGNITION: Riccarton Knights stalwarts Tony Grenfell and Shane Tamatea with their
Canterbury Rugby League awards
be recognised, that was a great
feeling.
Tamatea has been a premier
player since 2000, when he
debuted at 18. The 37-year-old
second-rower has also coached
the under-18 Knights team and
has been a player-coach, pulling
double-duty for the premier
reserves side. If Tamatea plays
a full season next year, he will
bring up 300 games for the
club’s premier team.
“Looking at all the names
on the cup made it really sink
in how special this award is,”
Tamatea said.
He said he would keep playing
premier rugby league for as long
as his body holds up.
“We won it all in 2002 and
2004, so I got a taste of that
success early, but I’d really like
to get the team back to another
one before I give it away.”
Austin goes from the
Halswell Hornets to
Canada Wolverines
HALSWELL Hornets’ Brad
Austin is set to become the first
New Zealand-based league
player to be selected for the
Canada Wolverines later this
month.
Austin, 27, has
been selected for
the forthcoming
Americas
Championship,
which will also
act as a qualifier
for the 2021
Rugby League
World Cup in
England.
The University
of North Florida,
Jacksonville, will
host two doubleheader
rounds
on November 13
and 17.
Austin’s
selection comes
about thanks to
a conversation
with his grandmother about
her father, who died during
World War 2 while on duty with
the Queen’s Own Cameron
Highlanders of Canada.
“To be given the opportunity
to represent Canada in the
World Cup qualifiers is an
absolute privilege,” said Austin
to the website Total Rugby
Brad Austin
League.
“My nana, who was born
in Winnipeg, was excited to
hear the news of my selection,
as were family members I still
have living over there and
in Vancouver.”
Austin,
initially played
for the Halswell
Hornets, South
Island Scorpions,
Canterbury
Bulls and the
Canterbury
Maori team,
before moving
to Australia
and joining
Wests Devils
and winning a
championship
with them in the
Illawarra league.
Austin is still
a member of the
Hornets’ premier
squad and his
dad, Lance, is still an active
member at the club.
“I believe we have a great
chance to make history by
qualifying for the Rugby
League World Cup, and I
will do everything possible to
help achieve this goal for my
teammates, my family and for
Canada,” Austin said.
Cobham beat rivals in
water polo final
• By Jacob Page
COBHAM Intermediate got one
back in the final of the South
Island year 7 and 8 water polo
champs at Dunedin’s Moana
Pool.
Cobham beat Christ The King
7-5 to win the title on October
28. They previously drew with
Christ The King 4-4 during
the round-robin and lost the
Canterbury title decider to them
the previous week.
Cobham beat Canterbury
Combined 8-3, Southland
Combined 7-6, Balmacewen
Intermediate 7-2, James Hargest
College 3-2 and Casebrook
Intermediate 8-5 on their way to
the title.
Cobham won five of their
six games and reversed the
Canterbury championships
result in which they were beaten
by Christ the King.
Teacher in charge of water
polo Kate Dore said it was
Cobham’s first South Island title
in six attempts.
“Christ The King had been
the benchmark all season, so
for us to draw with them in the
round-robin game gave us a
lot of confidence that we were
able to use for the rest of the
tournament,” she said.
Dore said the team trained
once a week at Christ’s College.
Six of their players are part of
the Canterbury set-up, while the
rest are first-timers.
“The team has really improved
WESTERN NEWS
Nuturing the young for 167 years
The late US journalist
Herb Caen wrote: “A city
is not gauged by its length
and width but by the
broadness of its vision and
the height of its dreams.”
Caen might have been
writing of Christchurch,
as our visions for the new
city pay homage to the
dreams of the founders
while unleashing our own
dreams for a lofty future.
At the heart of the
city since those earliest
aspirational days when the
founders laid out the first
roads and planted the first
trees, St Michael’s has had
at its heart the vision and
dreams of our city and its
children.
Indeed, for 167 years,
St Michael’s has been
educating and nurturing
the visionaries and
dreamers who continue to
shape our city and step
out into the world beyond.
For our young pupils have
limitless potential to lead
exciting and generous
lives, and we have the
responsibility to educate and inspire
them, to encourage every child to
flourish, in mind, body and spirit.
St Michael’s is a prep school for girls
and boys in Years 1-8. Our classes are
small, fewer than 20 pupils, and our
specialist teachers ensure each child is
an individual, well known by staff and
fellow pupils alike. For at the heart of
St Michael’s are the essential values
of Christian faith and good citizenship:
respect, integrity, community, faith,
hope and love.
An independent school education
at the primary level is a great gift
and so traditional foundations in
Counting the beat, an exploration of rhythm. Year 1
and 2 Music.
English and Maths are assured. This
academic rigour then underpins our
wider curriculums in Science, History,
Geography and Spanish. IT literacy is
taught, not assumed, and computer
use is measured. We like teaching and
talking to our pupils!
A prep education offers balance.
St Michael’s cultural and sports’
programmes further develop each
child’s foundation, as creativity and
problem-solving come in many forms.
Specialist art and music classes are
enjoyed weekly. We have two choirs,
and most pupils play at least one
instrument or study speech and
drama with one of our nine
itinerant staff.
Located in the heart of
the city, on the banks of
the Avon and the new City
Promenade, our extended
campus is spectacular:
today, the Art Gallery;
tomorrow, the Gardens;
tennis later in Hagley Park.
A recent school survey
indicates that many of
our parents now work in
the thriving city centre,
or Lincoln and Riccarton
Road hubs but they live
city-wide. They comment
on the benefit of knowing
their children are in
school nearby and the
convenience of popping
in for an hour to catch
a performance or watch
a race. With the new
central exchange only a
block away, a number of
children arrive by bus from
all corners of the city.
Is your child one of 15
or 50? Is their classroom a
calm, productive learning
space or is the noise and
movement unceasing? How
much of the teacher’s attention does
your child actually receive? There is
an alternative.
You and your child are warmly
invited to discover for yourselves
our purposeful, wholehearted and
inclusive prep school. Our Open Day
is Tuesday, November 14, or contact
our registrar, Bec Hitchcock, for a
Collagen
The Body’s Youth Protein
Collagen is the primary protein in the
body. It is a major component of skin,
hair, nails, muscles, tendons, ligaments,
joint cartilage, bones, gums, teeth, eyes,
and blood vessels.
In fact collagen is the primary structural
component for all tissue in the body,
providing the strength and resilience
associated with youth, beauty and
wellness. The body’s natural collagen
production decreases with age resulting
in many signs of aging, such as flaccid
skin, wrinkles, ligament and tendon
injuries and aching joints. Collagen
supplementation is one of the most
fundamental things a person can do to
prevent premature aging and promote
youthful vitality.
NEOCELL are the industry leaders in
research on collagen supplementation.
Through advanced research they have
perfected a way to hydrolyse collagen and
effectively reduce its molecular weight this
improving the absorption of collagen into
the blood stream by over 90%.
A clinical study on NEOCELL
COLLAGEN has shown skin hydration to
increase an average of 21% and up to 50%,
with 92% of test subjects experiencing
firmer, softer skin. Most people taking
NEOCELL COLLAGEN reported seeing
visible improvements within two weeks.
Collagen supplementation provides
the nutrients necessary to support the
body’s collagen supply. It can help reduce
fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin
elasticity, support building of strong bones
The tree of LIFE
New research on Gingko
Biloba excites researchers!
For decades scientists believed brain
damage with age, after a stroke or injury
was irreversible and brain neurons could
not be repaired. In more recent times,
new research has shown that neurons
can grow back with the right conditions
and that a special extract of Gingko
Biloba (EGb-761 or TEBONIN) has
been clinically found to assist in this.
The implications for stroke recovery are
obvious, but researchers also know many
of us suffer from undetected “microstrokes”
that over a period of time slowly
reduce our cognitive function. TEBONIN
is prescribed worldwide as a natural
supportive agent for a healthy brain and
cognitive function. It supports healthy
mental performance, concentration, focus,
alertness, motor function and to help
with many conditions including tinnitus
(ringing and noise in the ears), vertigo
and normal balance. TEBONIN improves
micro-circulation and helps the blood
flow reach those critical places it needs to
get. It is a potent anti-oxidant and makes
the red blood cells more pliable and
capillary walls more flexible.
TEBONIN is one of the most widely
studied and researched herbal products in
the world and is the only Ginkgo biloba
Summerset
at Avonhead
Summerset at Avonhead is coming!
We have purchased nine and a half hectares of land in the lovely suburb
of Avonhead for our newest retirement village. Located on Hawthornden
Road, the village location is close to shops, along with both Avonhead
and Burnside Parks and transport links. With villages already located in
Wigram and Casebrook, our village in Avonhead will be another great
option for future residents.
We are working towards a village which will provide around 240 homes
including villas, cottages, apartments and serviced apartments. A village
centre will offer fantastic recreational facilities, and a care centre will offer
rest home and hospital-level care. Plus an award-winning Memory Care
Centre will provide safe, apartment style living for people with dementia.
Register your interest in our village by ordering an information pack today,
and you will be the first to receive information and updates.
