Vegetation fire risk concern

LONG OVERGROWN grass,
which has prompted calls for
better maintenance in the
Marshland area, is due to be
mowed next week.
The city council is planning
to mow overgrown grass in the
vicinity of 2 Mairehau Rd, 251,
263 and 280 Marshland Rd next
week.
It comes after Marshland resident
Niki De Pina wrote to the
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board expressing
her frustration
at the lack
of mowing and
maintenance in
the area.
She said the
berms had not

for several years and could
become a fire risk in the summer
months due to their density and
height.
City council transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas
said maintenance of grass in
areas such as Marshland had
not been reduced. “Roadside
grass on roads such as this are
generally cut up to five times per
year,” he said.
Board chairman Kim
Money said it is great it has been
brought to the board’s attention
and city council staff will report
back on the issue.

of berms in the Marshland area.
City councillor David East
said there are some issues with
the level of service on some New
Zealand Transport Agency roads.
“The Travis Rd, Anzac Drive,
it gets complicated there. You
have got NZTA mowing a metre
or two on the road edge and the
rest of it is council,” he said.
Cr East said he would like to
see more co-ordination with
NZTA mowing programmes.
He said the mowing
programme along New Brighton
Rd is also very erratic.

Fire rages, homes at risk
Air guns at Bottle
Lake lead to
police call out

POLICE WERE called to Bottle
Lake Forest after walkers raised
concerns about rabbits being
hunted with guns.
They found two men in possession
of an air gun at about 7.50pm
on October 28.
No charges were laid, but advice
was given to the men about using
air guns in public places. A police
spokesman said rabbit hunting
was not a common problem at the
forest.
Queenspark resident Jan
Sekihara said she was “shocked”
when she saw a man with what
appeared to be a hunting rifle
about 100m from the forest
entrance on the Lima Rd side.
“I was petrified, it was the first
time I had ever seen a gun, whether
it be hunting or not. I saw the
gun and I was really frightened
for my safety and the safety of my
dog,” she said.
Many families were out walking
at the time, she said. Mrs Sekihara
was concerned her schnoodle,
which was off lead at the time
could be mistaken for a rabbit.
“It just pays for people to be
aware there are some people out
there without any commonsense.
They have no respect for rules.”
