Residents want truck ban
• By Ashleigh Monk
TRUCKS COULD be banned
from some Belfast streets if
residents get their way.
It comes after a Sefton
St resident approached the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board to voice
concerns over trucks driving
through and parking on her
street.
Community
board
chairman Sam
MacDonald
said staff
would look
into options
for heavy vehicle
restrictions
Sam
MacDonald
on Sefton St,
Englefield Rd
and Lagan St.
“Ali has
been working with Harewood
councillor Aaron Keown on
her concerns over the impacts
of heavy vehicles in Sefton and
neighbouring streets,” he
said.
“As is normal practice we have
asked our roading engineers to
look into the issue and consider
any options that may be available.
Staff will report back to the
board on this.”
OPTIONS: Residents in Belfast want to impose heavy vehicle restriction to prevent trucks from
driving through their residential streets.
Belfast Area Residents’ Association
member Gavin Stanbury
said trucks in residential streets
had been an issue for “many
years”.
“There are a number of small
side streets that are being used
by the trucks . . . the trucks often
take short-cuts, especially if the
main roads had heavy traffic
and they want to get somewhere
quickly,” he said.
“If they park on one side of a
street, it makes it very difficult
for cars to get past as the streets
are quite narrow.”
He said he and other
residents had approached the
council about the issue in the
past.
“We’ve had members of our
association phone up and complain,
it happens every now and
again, and it goes away
OPTION
for a wee
ONE
while then it comes back again.
It’s not a permanent solution.”
Mr Stanbury said he didn’t
think the use of side streets by
trucks would continue for much
longer.
“Because we’ve got the new
Western Belfast Bypass, there
are more trucks using that now.
There aren’t quite as many using
Belfast if they’re going into town
or to Lyttelton.”
