A MULTICULTURAL<br />

EXTRAVAGANZA<br />

Aside from being Germany’s<br />

largest city, Berlin is known as<br />

the country’s most culturally<br />

diverse. In fact, out of its 3.7<br />

million residents, 628,000 are<br />

foreigners from across 190<br />

countries.<br />

To celebrate this diversity,<br />

Berlin holds the annual<br />

Karneval der Kulturen (KdK) or<br />

Carnival of Cultures. It was<br />

launched in 1996 in response<br />

to racist attacks in the city,<br />

and has since continued to<br />

promote openness and<br />

acceptance by highlighting<br />

the beauty of different<br />

cultures through music,<br />

dance, art, and food.<br />

“The KdK offers a chance<br />

for everyone, especially<br />

marginalised groups, to<br />

proudly demonstrate their<br />

cultural identity. It lets people<br />

explore a broad spectrum of<br />

Berlin’s cultural richness in an<br />

open and high-spirited<br />

atmosphere,” said Stefanie<br />

Schatte, a member of the<br />

organising team at<br />

Karnevalburo. “The Karneval<br />

is a joyful statement for the<br />

diverse society we live in,” she<br />

added.<br />
