Lincoln High celebrates sporting success
Lincoln High School’s annual awards night recognised
students’ achievements both on and off the field.
Jacob Page reports
MILLIE THOMPSON has
been named sportsperson of the
year at the Lincoln High School
Sports Awards.
Millie was presented the supreme
award of the night by former
student and multiple-time
Paralympic gold medal swimmer
Sophie Pascoe.
The award recognises the
student who has made the most
significant contribution to sport
at the school over the past 12
months.
Millie was captain of the
mixed touch team and she also
made the Canterbury girls under-18
touch team.
She is also a talented equestrian
rider. At the end of last year,
she competed for New Zealand
at the Dressage World Challenge.
As a result of her achievements,
she is third in the FEI world
rankings.
As a hockey player, Millie
completely stepped up to the role
of vice-captain for the first XI
girls team.
Although injured for a majority
of the season, she never failed
to make a training or fitness
session.
The Williams Cup for sports
performance of the year was
shared by swimmer Lochlan
MacKenzie and shooter Logan
Howe.
Lochlan won five medals at the
New Zealand secondary schools’
swimming championships,
including gold in the under-15
200m breaststroke.
Logan won the New Zealand
secondary schools’ clay target
shooting high gun championship.
Triathlete Reece Rush won the
Brown Cup for boys sporting
excellence after he represented
New Zealand at the Triathlon
World Cup on the Gold Coast
last month.
Zoe McMeeken won the King
Cup for girls’ excellence in sport
after she earned selection for the
New Zealand under-15 girls football
team.
She won six events at the
Lincoln High School athletics
meeting in term one.
This was followed by
five placings at the
Canterbury and
South Island secondary
school
athletics championships,
including
first in
Canterbury
in the javelin.
She was also
named year 10
sportsperson of
the year.
The Lincoln
High School
mixed touch team
won the James
Shield for team
of the year.
They finished
third in the
boys grade of
Super Touch,
second at the
Canterbury
championships
and won the
South Island
championships.
At the end
of last year
they attended the
national tournament
in Auckland, where
they came fifth, and
they will return in December for
the 10th consecutive year.
