Issue 285
November 2018
Hello
Welcome to this issue of The Garage.
Welcome to this issue of The Garage
Modern engines – streets
ahead of their forebears when
it comes to a heady mix of
power, economy and lack of
emissions – but even what’s
a brand-new, ultra-reliable engine today
might not be so in a few years time.
Whether it’s engine management or gaskets,
there’s still a need for repairs, but are
you geared-up for that work? Like it or not
in order to carry out that work, technicians
have to be fully clued-up because as cars become
more complicated, it becomes easier
to make mistakes.
Engine management systems have been
with us a long time and workshops are familiar
with the numerous components that
work together to keep an engine running
as the VM intended. However, things can
go wrong and once a light’s illuminated on
the dashboard it’s likely some repairs or replacements
are needed.
With such a varied car parc and with such
a variety of components making up the entire
engine management system workshops
need good factor support (i.e., high quality
products) in order to get the job accomplished
quickly and properly, and to meet
the main dealer challenge head-on.
Gaskets might last longer than they used
to be but with age they can deteriorate and
consequently need replacing. With plenty of
products on the market it can be difficult to
know where to start but workshops should
ensure they are fitting the best possible because,
after all, they aren’t the most expensive
replacement parts a car might need.
That’s it for now, but as always, your
thoughts and comments are always welcome:
the page.
Recruitment headaches
can be avoided by most
garages says Progress
Progress Recruitment
Solutions
(UK), the Norwichbased
automotive recruitment
specialist,
says concerns garage owners
have when hiring new
employees are well-founded
but can be overcome.
“It’s not something they
do often so it’s outside the
comfort zone,” said Laura
Rycroft, Managing Director
of Progress Recruitment.
“This can make for hesitancy
when there’s a need for
clarity.”
Many garages realise the
old stereotype of an employer
holding all the cards no
longer rings true.
Skills shortages in the automotive
aftermarket are becoming
acute; too few youngsters
joining to replace those
leaving has seen the pool of
skilled labour shrinking
year-on-year.
Progress Recruitment
first suggests garages begin
by changing their mind-set
from ‘buyers’ of staff to ‘sellers’
trying to convince good
prospects to join.
“It helps you really understand
what you can offer,”
said Laura. “Then create
a clear job role and be as
transparent as possible to
attract suitable people.”
Competitive pay and job
location will always be important
but don’t assume
you simply have to pay more.
“Consider whether you can
bring someone in with lower
skills or less experience and
develop them, so they can
learn habits that fit your
business,” said Laura.
Progress also suggests
looking at other flexible elements
that can add high perceived
value but at little cost.
“Staff training, job support
or mentoring and opportunities
for career development
are all really key motivators
for candidates,” said Laura.
“Can you also support candidates
with young families?
If there’s scope to allow them
to shuffle work and home
commitments occasionally
make sure they know this as
a little flexibility here creates
a lot of goodwill.
“Even in today’s aftermarket
of rapidly changing technology
people still want to
enjoy work so if you offer a
friendly, fun or family-orientated
ethos tell people about
it.”
Once you’ve identified
someone suitable, Progress
Recruitment urges garages
to act fast. Let candidates
know they’re a good fit and
then proceed quickly with an
Laura Rycroft, Managing Director
of Progress Recruitment
offer – whilst you’re ploughing
on through scheduled
interviews they might find
something else.
Last but not least, garages
who feel they need professional
assistance to manage
the process and reduce their
time commitment can particularly
benefit from working
with a specialist recruitment
agency.
“We can help right through
the process, advising on job
description, pay and benefits
to advertising before managing
candidate screening,
short-listing and interviewing,”
said Laura.
LARGE VANS DRIVE GROWTH IN
OCTOBER UK NEW LCV MARKET
DEMAND FOR new light commercial vehicles (LCVs)
increased in October, according to the latest figures released
today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders
(SMMT). More than 28,000 vans and pick-ups joined British
roads in the month, representing a 14.1% increase in
registrations, as demand continued to fluctuate throughout
2018.
Growth was driven by a rise in demand for the popular
2.5-3.5t van, up 27.6% to take a 70.1% share of the market,
while demand for pick-ups increased 3.2%. In contrast, small
and medium-sized vehicles both experienced declines, down
-24.9% and -14.8% respectively. The rise follows months of
fluctuating registrations caused by variations in fleet buying
cycles and business confidence.
Year-to-date, 302,741 new LCVs have been registered,
representing a drop of -1.6% on the first 10 months of 2017,
and in line with current forecasts. However, demand remains
at a high level, up a third (33.0%) on the same period in 2013.
ing Fuels is well known as
the world leader in race
fuel technology, with winning
formulations in every
series. The brand’s portfolio
is huge and the VP team has
already provided us with
brilliant technical support
to help us provide the best
possible fuel to racers. We
will be working together to
further develop the VP Racing
Fuels’ presence in racing,
rallying, sprint, endurance,
motorcycle, indeed, all areas
of motorsport”
VP Racing Fuels also has
products available for purchase
at major race venues,
including Santa Pod and
Mallory Park.
NEWS 08
Launching 20 new ‘5-wire’
NTK Lambda sensors
IGNITION specialist NGK
continues to enhance
its NTK sensors offering
with the launch of 20
new wide band Lambda
sensors in November 2018.
The new wide band sensors
– commonly referred to
as ‘5-wire’ Lambda sensors
– will supplement the company’s
existing range of 64
NTK OE 5-wire sensors.
The launch significantly
increases its UK range coverage
– particularly for VAG
models – and means that
NGK now has 5-wire sensors
available for almost
every vehicle manufacturer
who utilises this technology.
The products will be visible
on MAM Software in mid-
November when they will be
supported by full original
equipment (OE) and competitor
cross-references.
News of the launch comes
hard on the heels of NGK’s
announcement that it is to
introduce a range of new
premium NTK camshaft and
crankshaft sensors in the
UK in 2019.
A new European programme,
comprising 567-
part numbers covering 88
percent of the car parc,
equivalent to 270 million
cars, was announced recently
at the Automechanika
Frankfurt show and UKspecific
part numbers and
vehicle parc coverage will be
confirmed over the coming
months.
Mark Hallam, Marketing
Manager, NGK Spark Plugs
(UK) Ltd, said: “The launch
of our new NTK 5-wire sensors,
which are already in
stock, confirms the NTK
electronics brand as the
complete, one-stop shop for
replacement sensors.
“NTK has more than 40
years’ experience in the sensor
business and this is a
fantastic addition to our
portfolio of Lambda sensors,
exhaust
gas temperature
sensors (EGTS),
NOx sensors and Mass
Air Flow (MAF) sensors
and Manifold Absolute Pressure
(MAP) sensors.
“The NTK sensors’ offering
will be even stronger
next year with the introduction
of our new premium
NTK camshaft and crankshaft
sensors and is sure to
prove popular with our distributors
and their garage
customers.”
NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd
is also a leading supplier of
OE spark plugs and glow
plugs, plus ignition coils, to
the independent automotive
aftermarket and says the experience
it has in supplying
the VMs worldwide allows
it to offer exactly the right
sensor for every vehicle application.
The company is the
world’s largest manufacturer
of Lambda sensors and,
as an OE supplier to many of
the world’s leading VMs under
the NTK brand, supplies
the same components to the
UK automotive aftermarket.
LuK. THE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT.
The DMF is OE for a reason. LuK engineers help to design today’s modern, lightweight
and efficient transmission systems, and only a dual mass flywheel can maintain the
engineering and performance specifications originally intended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Trust the parts the vehicle was born with. For clutches and DMFs fit genuine LuK.
NEWS 10
ONE YEAR ON:
A CLEAR VISION
FROM TRICO’S
MANAGING
DIRECTOR
WITH A background
of
more than 25
years in the
automotive industry
and 9 years at TRICO,
Adam Richards stepped up
to become the UK figurehead
when he was promoted from
Operations Manager to Managing
Director a year ago.
Adam previously worked
in the materials and supply
chain management sector,
which progressed into an operational
management role
in a number of industrial
sectors, but predominantly
automotive.
Adam took the decision to
join the team at TRICO as the
company has a long history
that they are fiercely proud
of, but have a core belief
that they should always be
looking forward to the next
innovation and step for the
business.
During his time at TRICO’s
European headquarters in
Pontypool, he has been integral
to modernising the
production area by making
it as lean as possible, using
modern processes and cutting
down on waste.
The warehouse has flourished
from a shell into a fully-fledged
European distribution
centre of nearly 7,500
square metres which handles
the company’s storage and
distribution functions for the
whole of their European customer
base. Approximately
10 million units were distributed
through the warehouse
last year, with more than
50,000 picks processed and
despatched to 165 European
customers.
Adam said: “Not only do we
have the right team processing,
promoting and pushing
the TRICO brand, with seven
employees recently celebrating
25 years of service, but
we have matched this with
the strongest and most competitive
product range to
date. This has been reflected
in growth of sales in all our
market sectors-OE, OEM
and the aftermarket year-onyear
and this is built on the
lessons that we have learned
by listening and ensuring we
are catering for our customers’
needs.
“We have a team out on
the road ensuring that customers
have the correct and
up-to-date range, so that
they have the right product
in stock to suit the end-user.
We also offer our distributors
full sales and marketing
support, including training,
technical assistance and
sales promotion guidance,
as well as point-of-sale material.”
On TRICO’s objective mission,
Adam added: “Our goal
is to win more customers
by demonstrating that we
can provide them with an
effective, turnkey solution
for their wiper blade programme,
backed up with ongoing
support, to make the
change to TRICO as seamless
as possible.
“It’s an exciting time at
TRICO, as there are a lot of
things coming to fruition that
we’ve been working on for a
while as a company that will
stand us in good stead for
planned future growth”
IT’S BETTER TO GO ALL INCLUSIVE
Our boxes not only contain the same parts that vehicles are born with, but also all of
the ancillary components you need to make a professional repair, right down to
the last nut, bolt or washer. You can also redeem the included REPXPERT bonus points
Opinion ADAS 16
ADAS becoming more and more
significant in our driving lives
Advanced driver
assistance systems
(ADAS) are
a comprehensive
range of systems
to help a driver.
It is an unfortunate fact
that most road accidents
can be traced back to human
error. ADAS systems
have been developed to help
the driver in a variety of
ways, but with the sole aim
of reducing road fatalities by
minimising human error.
Cars have developed and
evolved at such a rate, that
only a few years ago, it would
be unthinkable that a small
family car would have rain
sensing windscreen wipers
or automatic headlights,
that privilege being left to the
high end Mercedes or BMW
ranges.
Safety features are designed
to avoid collisions
and accidents through technologies
that alert a driver:
There are also adaptive features
available such as automated
lights, adaptive cruise
control and pedestrian crash
avoidance mitigation.
There is a wide variety of
ADAS: Some are already
built into cars and others
are available by way of addon
packages.
There are also aftermarket
solutions available.
ADAS relies on information
gathered from multiple data
sources, LIDAR and radar
being a couple of examples.
In addition, information can
be gathered via other sources
which are separate from
the from the primary vehicle
platform. This can either be
from other vehicles or vehicle
to infrastructure (mobile
telephony or Wi-Fi data network)
systems.
ADAS systems are by far
one of the fastest growing
automotive segments, with
steadily increasing quality
standards. ISO 26262 is the
international standard for
functional safety of electric
and/or electric systems in
production automobiles,
developing technology standards
for image sensor quality
and communications
protocols.
The next generation ADAS
will increasingly use wireless
network connectivity
by utilising car-to car and
car-to-infrastructure data.
Fuelled by regulatory and
consumer interest in safety
applications that protect
drivers and reduce accidents,
the role of ADAS will
only continue to grow and
become more and more significant
in our driving lives.
It’s worth noting that in
1973 a telephone call was
made via a mobile phone for
the very first time. While it
was cumbersome and heavy
it paved the way for a whole
new way of life for portable
communications. Today, we
all pretty much rely on our
mobile phones to organise
our lives through social and
professional channels.
Some may be surprised
to learn that ADAS systems
have been around since the
late 60s and the Citroen DS.
In 1969, the third generation
model included directional
headlights. Citroen re-designed
the light clusters,
enabling the car maker to
place two headlights in each
cluster, with the inner set
swivelling with the steering
wheel. These were attached
via a cable and allowed the
on board high beam to swivel
by up to 80° as the driver
turned the steering wheel,
directing the beam in the direction
of travel.
The role of ADAS is here
to stay and is growing: Today’s
independent workshop
needs to consider its
role and not get left behind
by more switched-on rivals.
Opinion ADAS
Auto Windscreens
puts safety first
It’s been two years
since Auto Windscreens
first opened up about
its approach to recalibrating
Advanced
Driver Assistance Systems
(ADAS) after a glass replacement.
Opting not to buy aftermarket
equipment like
its competitors and instead
partnering with manufacturers,
the company has been
vocal about why it’s bucked
the trend – the paramount
reason being safety.
“I can’t stress enough the
importance of correct recalibration
methods,” says Rupert.
“Through all the conversations
we’ve had with
manufacturers, it is clear
that only their specific recalibration
tooling and software
is approved and can
guarantee complete system
functionality is restored.
The aftermarket quote to
deliver a one-size-fits-all solution
but this just isn’t possible.”
Auto Windscreens also
only use genuine OEM glass
– this’s what manufacturers
recommend in vehicles with
ADAS.
“Volvo recently stated that
fitment of an aftermarket
windscreen and not recalibrating
using the Volvo VIDA
system would switch off up
to 28% of a vehicle’s safety
features,” comments Rupert.
“Other manufacturers
have said similar and this is
why we only fit original manufacturer
screens. We’ve negotiated
sustainable pricing
on parts, with many actually
costing less than non-OEM
glass.”
After identifying a vehicle
has ADAS, Auto Windscreens
manages the complete
customer journey,
from glass fitment to recalibration
booking with the
nearest approved dealer. It
delivers a ‘hand-held’ service
ensuring drivers understand
the process and why
recalibration is critical after
a windscreen replacement.
Upon completion of all recalibrations,
which include
a global systems check, approved
dealer certificates
are issued to drivers. These
guarantee systems have
been returned to their prereplacement
condition and
will function as the manufacturer
intended.
“100% of all manufacturers
can and are successfully
recalibrated through this
partnership-led solution,
with any underlying issues
also being detected through
additional diagnostics,” Rupert
remarks.
In contrast, aftermarket
equipment cannot service
all vehicle makes. Volvo and
Porsche are among a number
of those that cannot be
calibrated outside of their
manufacturer networks.
Without access to the latest
manufacturer data and
software, the aftermarket is
inevitably playing catch up
too, unable to calibrate new
models until data is made
available to them.
“Aftermarket equipment
providers actively promote
recalibration as an additional
revenue-making stream.
However, anyone purchasing
the tooling and software
needs to be aware that they
face higher non-negotiated
rates with dealers where
calibration isn’t possible, as
well as further costs to keep
up with emerging technologies.”
Auto Windscreens offers
its customers a fixed recalibration
rate.
“ADAS is not a cash cow
to us; that’s reflected in our
low-cost rate,” Rupert says.
“It’s about helping keep
drivers safe by offering a required
service at an affordable
price. Our business and
insurance partners know
they are protected by our
methodology, as are their
customers.”
Auto Windscreens’ solution
insulates risk of ADAS
failing – the consequences of
which could be catastrophic.
Rupert concludes: “We’re
very conscious of the customer
journey and all-round
experience but firmly believe
that it’s in everyone’s best
interest to 100% guarantee
safety rather than putting
drivers back on the road in
potentially unsafe vehicles in
the name of one-stop convenience!”
Creative Funding Solutions
Business Finance Specialists
Creative Funding
Solutions are a
leading UK finance
broker. Founded by
Mike Lowe in 2009,
the company has grown rapidly
each year since, and now
boasts a wide panel of over 50
specifically selected funders.
Head office is based in
Sussex, very near Gatwick
and account managers are
located all around the UK
with customers in all corners
of the country! Creative
Funding Solutions are business-funding
specialists with
a particular focus on asset finance,
cash flow finance and
property finance.
Creative Funding Solutions
are quite unique in their approach
to getting to know
their customers. The team
are always available to meet
to discuss different finance
options. Customers often
comment that some of the
solutions discussed are completely
new to them. They
may find a cash flow solution
that customers didn’t even realise
was accessible.
After a fact finding initial
meeting Creative Funding Solutions
are often able to marry
up the customer’s bespoke
requirements to a funder that
best suits this need, which
should bring optimal results.
Customer satisfaction and
the right outcome is at the
very heart of everything they
do.
Creative Funding Solutions
not only finds finance for
transport/vehicles but also
diagnostic equipment, compressors,
MOT bays, ramps,
IT equipment - even mezzanine
flooring amongst some
of the recent items funded.
Cash Flow Finance
It has been noted that recently
there has been an increase
in customers enquiring
about Cash Flow Finance,
this is a very popular way to
give a business a cash injection.
There are various different
options including,
unsecured loans, merchant
terminal advances and factoring
or invoice discounting.
With a factoring facility
businesses will never need to
use up an overdraft waiting
for a customer to pay. An advance
of up to 95% against an
approved prior submitted invoice
can be available almost
immediately.
Most of the value of sales
invoices (less a small charge
for interest and fees) can be
released as cash as soon as
the same working day, rather
than having to wait for weeks
or possibly months of chasing
unpaid invoices. This may
reduce the administrative
burden on a business. Such a
service can be completely undisclosed
if you do not wish
your customers to know that
you are using this facility.
Basics of cash flow finance:
• Cash can be used for
major purchases, or to fund
business expansion. In effect
the business sells a stake in
future earnings, giving them
access to funds ahead of
earnings.
• The repayment schedule
for this kind of lending
correlates with the
company’s projected future
revenue and cash flow.
• Operational demands,
such as payroll, are a reason
for cash flow financing.
In addition, upgrading
premises, refurbishing,
additional staff or stock can
give greater earning power
allowing business to examine
cash flow financing options.
• ‘Speculate to accumulate’
though cash flow funding.
Many companies in this
industry are already
accessing cash through
this method
• Types of cash flow
financing include secured
and unsecured business
loans, merchant terminal
advances, stocking loans,
invoice discounting and
factoring.
More information on Cash
flow Finance is available
through businessfundingsolutions.co.uk.
Recovery and Logistics
Creative Funding Solutions
were recently the show sponsors
at The 2018 Recovery
Tow Show. The cross over
with the motor trade means
that they are well placed to
help in this sector. Creative
Funding Solutions already
have an established network
of motor garages who rely on
Creative to help with funding
requirements for themselves
and their customers.
Occasionally support and
information is provided to
customers affected by government
legislation impacting
their industries. The latest
project has been to try
to help companies affected
by The Ultra Low Emission
Zone (ULEZ) which is coming
into effect in Central London
on 8th April 2019. There are
plans to make Birmingham,
Leeds, Nottingham Derby
and Southampton ‘Clean Air
Zones’ by 2020. The Freight
Transport Association has
recommended that its members
refresh their fleets
before the forthcoming
changes.
This legislation will affect
all businesses with vehicles
working in all the aforementioned
areas and also the
North and South London circular
from 2021.
Business options include:
• Pay the daily charge
• Consider replacing all
vehicles
• Replace a proportion
of existing vehicles and
reassign older vehicles to
routes outside of the ULEZ
• Consider fitting a retrofit
system
• Plan your procurement to
gradually replace existing
fleet
How Creative Funding
Solutions can help:
• New, used and
reconditioned assets funded
• Terms from 12 to 84
month periods available
• Credit-lines arranged
• Zero deposit options
• Residual values/balloon
payments
• Fixed/variable rate
arrangements
• Invoice discounting/cash
flow finance options
• Business loans
Further information on all
Engine MANAGEMENT
Hear that
engine
purr!
Engine management is no longer the simple
task it was, with plenty of electronics and
parts involved. The Garage’s Richard Barnett
investigates the market surrounding Engine
Management.
In the not too distant
past engine management
required little more than
a screwdriver to adjust
the carburetor and a
socket to change the spark
plugs.
Times, of course, have
changed, and so too has engine
architecture, changes
being driven by environmental
and economy requirements.
Turbochargers and
superchargers offer a quick
and easy solution, but more
advanced engine designs include
variable valve timing,
where ECU’s control when
the valves open.
For the workshop modern
engine design means
greater complexity, as finding
the source of an engine
malady is not always easy,
but that requires technician
training to carry out diagnostic
checks and interpreting
data, before replacing a
worn component.
However, meeting technical
brick walls can lead to
greater profitability, and
Euro Car Parts/ Paula Huesca
de Crean says ECU repair
can bring in useful extra
income, particularly when a
main dealer-sourced ECU
can cost more than £1000.
“Although having a lifespan
of eight to 10 years,
ECUs often need to be repaired
much sooner due
to where they are located
within the car. Damage can
be caused via heat, water
or dirt, with water ingress
a leading cause of ECU failure.
If not addressed quickly
enough, such damage can
cause the system to break
down completely. The ability
to repair ECUs effectively
is a crucial capability for repairers
to have in-house,” de
Crean says.
It might not be a very easy
task, and often independent
garages are bounced into replacing
an ECU rather than
repairing it, as de Crean
explains: “Such repairs are
30, 31 Engine Management.indd 1 13/11/2018 09:56

31 focus Engine Management
bad
good
not easy and few repairers
have their own in-house
provision. Instead, many
independent repairers have
no choice but to replace the
system outright, or pass the
work over to dealers.
“This is an expensive solution
for both repairers and
the end customer, especially
when the system is still repairable.
What’s more, due
to repair costs, and the
significant profit that can
be made from installing a
new ECU, the majority of
franchised dealers opt to
replace, rather than repair,
which is not the best result
for the customer.”
Current engines feature
camshaft and crankshaft
sensors, and come in inductive
or hall effect forms. In
the former a magnet and coil
detect teeth on the shaft’s
gearwheel and thus creating
a voltage change which produces
a waveform output
signal. Hall effect types create
a digital sensor.
According to Elta oil contamination
or damage to
connectors can cause fault
codes but, when it comes to
replacement, there are some
basic steps to ensure the
task is carried out properly.
“The correct positioning
of the new sensor is critical
as camshaft sensors often
feature slotted mounting
holes and/or locating pins.
Therefore, ensure that any
locating pins are correctly
seated before fully slotting
into place. Failure to do so
can shear off the locating
pin, causing misalignment
of the sensor and incorrect
readings. Finally, reconnect
wiring and reset the ECU if
needed,” Elta says.
Some sensors are far more
difficult to replace but when
it comes to warranty returns,
the sensor is often not
the cause of its return
“Some cam/crankshaft
sensors are particularly difficult
to replace, usually
due to awkward fitting locations
or angles within the
engine bay, camshaft sensor
EE0018 being a perfect example.
This sensor has the
highest return rate under
warranty, but when tested
the diagnosis usually rejects
the claim as it is not faulty,
but damaged due to a fitting
error.
“This is down to the fact
that this sensor is located in
a particularly tricky position
and is often returned with
the locating lug sheared off,
probably as a result of securing
the sensor into place
without correct alignment.
The slight misalignment of
the sensor has a dramatic
effect on its performance.”
Much of the emphasis on
greater economy and performance,
as well as reduced
emissions focuses on the
air/fuel mix, especially by the
time it reaches the catalytic
convertor, which is where
the lambda sensor steps in.
According to Hella faulty
lambda sensors can cause
a multitude of problems
including increased fuel
consumption, sluggish performance
and increased
emissions, with faults
caused by short circuiting,
overheating or the use of fuel
additives.
“The lambda sensor principle
is based on an oxygen
comparison measurement.
This means that the remaining
oxygen content of the exhaust
emission (approx. 0.3
– three percent) is compared
with the oxygen content of
the ambient air (approx.
20.8 percent),” Hella says.
“The function of the lambda
sensor is usually checked
during the routine exhaust
emissions test. However,
since it is subject to a certain
amount of wear, it should
be checked at regular intervals
(approx. every 20,000
miles), to ensure that it is
working properly.”
Replacement should be
handled carefully and, says
Hella, using specific tools and
keeping the sensor’s probe
measurement away fro oil,
water and grease: damaged
sensors and those that have
been dropped should not be
used, Hella counsels.
and knowledgeable
woman about all aspects
of motoring, we
caught up with Rebecca
to find out what a typical
day in her life consists of.
Recently announced as a
brand ambassador for MotorEasy,
the UK’s fastest growing
motoring association,
Jackson starts the day with a
conference call regarding MotorEasy’s
‘Lost in Translation’
campaign to promote the use
of ‘plain English’ in garages.
Jackson self-started a usedcar
sales business in 2007,
having professionally bought,
sold, restored, repaired, driven,
raced and independently
reviewed cars around the
world, she is a trusted voice
for motoring consumers.
Jackson said; “The campaign
has been designed to remove
consumer confusing jargon
and promote hassle-free and
time-saving maintenance and
repair bookings, as well as
best value and convenient
MOTs, warranties, repairs
and car servicing. A positive
move for workshops, helping
to build trust between garages
and consumers”.
“As a busy entrepreneur,
consumer and motorist I understand
the need to make car
ownership and maintenance
simple. The ‘Lost in Translation’
campaign should bring
greater clarity to the world
of motoring, allowing MotorEasy
members to focus on
the more important things in
life,” continues Jackson.
Mid- morning is a telephone
interview with a wellknown
consumer motoring
magazine to promote her
TV show, Modern Wheels or
Classic Steals, currently airing
on Dave. Jackson is a
well-established TV presenter
having previously
co-presented CBBC car
show Ali-A’s Superchargers
and appearing
as a guest presenter on
Fifth Gear.
Her current show involves
Jackson battling
against the owner and
founder of The London
Motor Museum,
Elo King, to help a
confused car shopper
choose between
a modern motor or
a classic car. Jackson
is firmly on the
side of the current product
vehicles, where King likes to
throw some less conventional
classic vehicles into the mix.
Jackson is full of praise for
her co-presenter, and despite
the on-screen rivalry and
healthy banter, it is clear the
pair enjoy working together.
Series one features an
eclectic selection of vehicles
from a Renault Zoe to a classic
BMW 5 Series Alpina.
Budgets range from a few
thousand to over £100,000.
“I had lots of favourites,” says
Jackson “There were just too
many great cars to choose
from: A Porsche 997 Turbo
S, McLaren 570S and BMW
i8 rank highly, but then there
is the beautiful Ferrari 488
Spider which features in the
series opening credits.” In
one episode Jackson treats
a lucky shopper to some ‘Rebecca
Racer’ hot laps in a
Lamborghini Gallardo, using
her racing skills to demonstrate
the capabilities of the
impressive sports car, to the
delight of her passenger.
The show has been well received
by viewers and Jackson
hopes a second series is
commissioned. And not just
for the obvious super car driving
benefits. Currently being
shown at 8pm on Mondays,
the series is also available on
catch-up via UKTV PLAY.
As an ambassador of Pertemps
Driver Training, Jackson
is heavily involved in
its Road Safety and vehicle
health check videos, which
aim to help raise awareness
of the dangers of driving under
the influence of alcohol or
drugs and using mobile devices
at the wheel. The videos
also address common driving
distractions which regularly
cause accidents, as well as
tips for seasonal driving.
Jackson said; “I am about
to record a series of videos
for Pertemps on how to become
an LGV driver; A world
away from my previous driving
experience, but I’m really
looking forward to it. Heavy
goods driving is still a male
dominated industry, so I am
also supporting Pertemps
and M6 Toll’s ‘Her-GV’ campaign,
helping more women
to pursue careers driving professionally.”
As online video reviewer
for What Car? Jackson’s recent
reviews range from the
luxurious Audi A7 to the budget
busting Dacia Duster. The
15-minute YouTube videos
usually take over three hours
each to film.
In the evening, Jackson
makes some final amends to
her weekly motoring column
in The Telegraph, here, she
writes long term test reviews
as well as consumer news
and opinion pieces.
A busy day, but it’s clear
that Jackson loves her cars,
something which is apparent
in her many projects. Her
own garage currently homes
a BMW E36 M3, Land Rover
Defender and Toyota MR2
Turbo. Her Porsche Boxster,
which she drove to victory in
the BRSCC production Boxster
Championship is currently
tucked away with her
race team. She is clearly very
passionate about her cars
– when she gets the time to
drive her own vehicles that is.
focus Gaskets 34
Don’t blow
a gasket
The Garage’s Richard
Barnett looks at the
technology behind
gaskets and the
companies that are
leading the way with
their evolution
Gaskets
Take a closer look
at the make up of a
modern car and it’s
interesting to see
just how many components
are similar to those
found in cars considerably
earlier.
Radiators for example still
house the coolant that circulates
around the engine,
the principle being the same
as found on cars from the
1980s, although how the
circulation is achieved has
changed considerably.
It’s the same with gaskets,
the all-too-often unsung heroes
of allowing surfaces to
mate together effectively in
many tough situations.
The UK’s leading aftermarket
supplier is FAI Automotive,
whose 30-years’ presence
has seen the market
change and, unsurprisingly,
the technology.
“The market has seen
many changes not only in
gasket design but also material.
The most significant is
the move away from composite
fibre head gaskets to MLS
(multi layered steel.) The
reason for this move is the
ever-increasing demands for
modern engines to be more
efficient and cleaner and by
introducing the multi-layered
steel (MLS) head gasket
OE manufacturers have been
able to increase the pressures
within the combustion
chamber. This enables the
engine to run hotter, burning
fuel more efficiently and
reduce CO² and other toxic
emissions,” FAI says.
Today, making gaskets
is no easy process, but the
production process requires
stages that aren’t cheap to
carry out, as FAI’s spokesman
explains: “A vital and
costly process during manufacture
is heat treatment,
this is essential to stabilise
the steel after it has been
cut and formed, so the
work hardened areas are returned
to the original tensile
strength. Evidence of this
process (golden surface) cannot
always be seen, as many
MLS gaskets are coated with
a black polymer to promote
micro sealing.
“Some of the latest generation
steel head gaskets are
now single layered of approx.
0.25mm thickness, but to
ensure no cylinder pressure
loss they have an additional
fire rings (between 0.02mm
& 0.04mm thickness) that
are welded to each cylinder
bore using a pulse laser.
Due to the high development
costs of the pulse lasers this
technology is only available
in a small number of wellestablished
highly advanced
gasket factories worldwide.”
Evidence of the UK car
parc’s complexity the FAI
gasket range has 6000 part
numbers covering more than
65,000 vehicles.
Ajusa’s gasket range features
products made from
FiberMax, MLS and Metal-
Elastomer to take into account
the various technologies
selected by VMs today.
As always, the cylinder head
gasket is the most important
one in a car but as engines
become more efficient, the
work of the head gasket becomes
harder.
Modern engines are more
powerful for their size than
they used to be and are often
made from aluminum
and light alloys but because
those materials are softer
they expansion and contrac-
34, 35 Gaskets.indd 1 13/11/2018 11:58

35 focus Gaskets
tion is greater than on older
engine types.
All this means, Ajusa says,
that a modern head gasket
should be able to resist high
temperatures, accommodate
expansion and contraction
and withstand the effects of
today’s modern coolants,
and those demands led to
the creation of the MLS gasket.
Fibre head gaskets feature
and intermediate, perforated
stainless steel layer, with a fibre
material either side. The
design incorporates metal
rings around cylinders to increase
sealing pressure, Ajusa
says. The design also sees
a silicone coating to resist
the fibre swelling on contact
with coolant. However, the
design is being replaced by
the MLS design due to modern
engine demands.
The multi-layer gasket is
made from several layers of
steel of different types: The
spacer layer uses stainless
steel, the functional layer is
made of cold-rolled stainless
steel (and contains the sealing
beads) while the stopper
layer is used to increase pressure
around the combustion
chamber. An elastomer coating
is used between layers to
improve sealing capabilities
and resist engine vibrations.
Mahle has stepped up its
Victor Reinz gasket offering
with 397 new parts comprising
not only gaskets but valve
stem seals and oil seals, not
only for cars but commercial
vehicles as well.
UFI Filters and Convey on the
front line in the fight against
UFI Filters, a leader
in the world of
filters and thermal
management, is on
the front line of the
fight against the sale of counterfeit
spare parts through
a range of traditional and
e-commerce channels. To
fight the root cause of the
phenomenon, the UFI Filters
Group has activated a series
of strategies together with
Convey, a company from Turin
that is a leading provider
of services for fighting counterfeits
online, with the aim
of limiting the sale of fake
spare parts which are invading
the market through the
internet.
Ever since 1972, UFI Filters
has been working to
protect its products and associated
brands through the
registration of its brands and
patents on the main global
markets. This is a first, indispensable
step toward
fighting the counterfeit trend,
which has become a fullblown
problem for the sector.
The annual revenue for
fake products is, in fact, estimated
at 1,700 billion euros,
generated by products that
mainly come from China and
the Far East, from countries
like Thailand, Indonesia, India;
ultimately reaching the
doorway to Europe through
the Middle East (Emirates)
and Turkey (source: S.I.A.C.
counterfeit spare parts
Partnership with Convey, one of the key companies for Internet
Registration of Intellectual Property for brands and patents
Active, in-the-field training service for distributors
Luca Betti, Aftermarket
Business Unit Director of
the UFI Filters Group
– Sistema Informativo Anti-
Contraffazione della Guardia
di Finanza italiana). The
phenomenon has negative
effects for everyone in the
supply chain, from the manufacturers
of original parts,
to distributors, to the end
user – the car owner – who
is unaware of the dangers
posed by fake spare parts
that have not undergone rigorous
quality control.
Action by the UFI Filters
Group has begun with the
registration of its active
brands – UFI Filters and
SOFIMA Filter – and of the
Group’s patents on the main
global markets. To date UFI
has registered 167 patents
and utility models. This
starting point allows UFI to
collaborate with Convey in
Internet Intelligence & Protection
on the main international
internet sales platforms,
especially Chinese
and Turkish ones.
The battle against counterfeit
products is not limited
to fighting the counterfeiter.
The probability of success
is increased through the
collaboration of proxies – e-
commerce platforms, social
networks, internet service
providers or hosting providers
– that do not want to be
responsible within the sale of
fake products. By means of a
‘take down notice’ backed by
a claim to intellectual property
and registered patents,
the illicit offer is rapidly removed
and, in the event of
a repeat offence, the counterfeiter’s
account may be
closed permanently. Such
action is consistent with international
e-commerce regulations.
Furthermore, through
more traditional channels,
UFI Filters offers a service to
its own distribution network,
providing training sessions
to help customers distinguish
original products from
counterfeits – especially
those products most affected
by counterfeiting such as the
“H2O” and “ONE” family and
high-filtration water filters,
which are the outcome of exclusive
UFI technology.
The action by UFI Filters to
fight inappropriate use of its
brands and the violation of
its patented technologies is
further strengthened by the
use of labels attached to the
product packaging in particularly
high-risk markets,
such as the Far East. These
labels include a QR code and
are produced using printing
techniques that make them
very difficult to copy.
Luca Betti, Aftermarket
Business Unit Director
of the UFI Filters Group,
comments: “Our partnership
with Convey is crucial
to fighting the fake product
phenomenon at its source; in
other words, through channels
like the internet that are
especially difficult to control.
This collaboration has
helped Convey raise awareness
in the market, showcasing
the UFI Group as an
example for a pilot project
that will include other players
in the sector. UFI Filters
also offers immediate technical
and legal support to its
own Aftermarket distribution
network, for instances
of counterfeiting reported
by customers. Therefore, to
put an end to this phenomenon,
our official distributors
must always be contacted
when purchasing products
that bear the UFI Filters or
SOFIMA Filter brand.”
manager, and starts his new
role on 1st November.
“Nissan has established
and maintains leadership in
the critical and fast-growing
crossover and EV market sectors
however, that success has
to be matched by a high quality
customer experience if it is
to deliver sustainable results,”
said Spencer.
“It’s vital to ensure the Nissan
dealer network continues
to match the standards of service
that today’s car buyers expect,
and demand, and I’m delighted
to be part of the brand
at this exciting time.”
Spencer’s appointment follows
15 years at Volkswagen
Group UK, where he worked
most recently as head of customer
quality and network development.
Alex Smith, managing director
at Nissan Motor GB, said:
“Spencer’s strong customer
quality and dealer-focussed
background is a perfect fit as
we continue to strengthen our
business in the UK.
“Today’s car buyers are fully
informed before they step foot
into any of our dealerships,
which makes it absolutely essential
that when they do, we
deliver a first class experience,
first time, every time.
Spencer’s role will focus on
every customer touchpoint
in order to continue to drive
quality throughout our dealer
network and ensure we deliver
an exceptional experience for
every Nissan customer.”
Ford dealer network and
online sales, in the United
Kingdom. She will continue
to report to Andy Barratt,
chairman and managing
director, Ford of Britain.
Lisa – currently director,
Marketing, Ford of Britain,
a position she has held
since August 2015 – replaces
Kevin Griffin who is retiring
from Ford after more
than 40 years of service.
“Lisa has shown great
leadership as our marketing
lead in the U.K. over
the past three years, and I
know she is the right person
to take on the challenges
and opportunities on the
sales front in what is Ford’s
largest market in Europe,”
said Andy Barratt.
Before becoming the director,
Marketing, Brankin
