Bid to ease traffic in Redcliffs
Changes to
keep school
pupils safe
• By Louis Day
MOTORISTS WILL no longer be
able to turn right from Main Rd
into Beachville Rd in Redcliffs if
a new traffic plan goes ahead.
The change is part of the city
council’s Redcliffs transport
project, which looks to
accommodate the new school at
Redcliffs Park. The school is set
to open at the start of 2020.
The city council has also
proposed a new 40km/h school
speed zone, which would cover
a portion of Beachville Rd,
Celia St and a small section of
McCormacks Bay Rd.
Redcliffs Residents’ Association
secretary Pat McIntosh said the
changes need to be made to cope
with the traffic created by the
relocation of the school.
“It certainly does need
alterations to cope with the fact
the school will create a lot more
traffic. Personally, I think the
business of putting the school
there is nonsense and traffic is
only one of the reasons.”
The city council has also
proposed moving the bus stop
opposite 5 Main Rd 225m
towards Redcliffs Village, about
a 2-3min walk from its current
location.
CHANGES: Motorists will not be able to turn right from Main Rd into Beachville Rd if planned changes go ahead.
City council head of transport
Richard Osborne said the
changes would ensure the
safety of students, while easing
congestion in the area.
“The proposed changes seek
to slow traffic on Main Rd and
ensure that all children walking
or cycling to the new school have
access to a conveniently-located
and safe crossing point.”
The city council has also
proposed to remove the
pedestrian crossing opposite 45
Main Rd and replace it with a
pedestrian refuge.
Mr Osborne believes removing
the right turn lane at the Main
Rd Beachville Rd intersection
is key to easing congestion and
enhancing pedestrian safety.
“Without a right turn
restriction, a queue of vehicles
waiting to turn would block the
main traffic flow. It’s anticipated
that the proposed right turn
restriction will help minimise
delays and improve visibility for
pedestrians.”
•Public consultation on
the transport plan closes
on December 17. The plan
will be finalised by the city
council in February and work
is proposed to start in April.
A COMMONSENSE outcome looks likely
for the long-running saga over the Taylors
Mistake baches (page 3).
The Sara Templeton-led working party
idea of 35-year licences means the people
who own them can consider long-term
plans for their baches.
The baches do give Taylors a good feel and add to its character.
I’m sure the sound of the sea pounding nearby during the dead
of night is fairly awesome.
And more good decisions look likely with a traffic plan for
streets around Redcliffs Park where the new school will be sited
(page 1).
Stopping vehicles turning right from Main Rd into Beachville
Rd is great and reducing feeder streets to 40km/h is a winner.
And on the school, it’s their annual fair this weekend (page 7).
Taylors Mistake bach
owners may get 35-year licences
• By Louis Day
TAYLORS MISTAKE bach
owners could get 35-year
licences on their contentious
properties.
The city council will
tomorrow discuss the plan
after the recommendation from
a working party led by city
councillor Sara Templeton.
It will go out for public
consultation on Friday.
The baches covered by the
licences would have to be of
heritage value
and used
for holiday
accommodation
only.
Taylors
Mistake
Association
Sara
Templeton
president Brent
Gilpin told Bay
Harbour News it
was a step in the
right direction.
The future of the baches has
been an issue for decades.
“I think the future is looking
much brighter, especially when
you look back to the 1970s when
the cave baches were burnt
down by the council,” he said.
Mr Gilpin was hopeful the
baches would survive beyond
the 35-year licence.
“I guess the key for us is
that the 35-year term would
be renewed afterwards on a
renewable basis.”
The working group has also
recommended that baches of
moderate to high risk of natural
hazards as well as ones that
obstructed public access to the
beach were either demolished or
relocated.
Bach owners not receiving a
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
new licence would also have to
cover the costs of demolition
and reinstating the land
themselves.
Said Mr Gilpin: “There are
some baches where the risk
is probably too great and
demolition would most likely
be the outcome there. But our
belief is that is a very small
number of baches. For a large
number of baches, there are
ways of mitigating the risks.”
He also hoped it would bring
ASBESTOS PIPE REMOVAL
The discovery of an asbestos
installing a wastewater pipe
discovered the abandoned pipe two
Solo rowing challenge for surf lifesaver
• By Matt Salmons
TAYLORS MISTAKE surf
lifesaver Isaac Giesen is set to
become the first New Zealander
to row solo across the Atlantic
Ocean and the first to row across
twice in a year.
All in the name of raising
money for mental health
charities in New Zealand and
Australia.
His trip is part of the international
Trans-Atlantic Challenge
2018. He is one of only five solo
entrants.
The crossing from the Canary
Islands to Antigua is more than
5000km across the Atlantic
Ocean and could take about 90
days.
“It really doesn’t matter how
physically fit you are, it’s a mental
game,” Mr Giesen said.
His only companions when his
rowboat Bonnie Lass departs on
December 12 will be sufficient
food, a water maker and a sound
system pumping out drum and
bass beats.
“I’ll also have podcasts, but it’s
got to be drum and bass playing
while I’m out there.”
As well as enjoying his sound
system, Mr Giesen said he would
do a bit of fishing and “have a
think about life.”
DEDICATION: Taylors Mistake surf lifesaver Isaac Giesen is taking on the Atlantic in a row boat
for the second time this year.
“It’s an adventure. There’ll
definitely be challenges, but I’ll
just deal with those as they come
up.”
Mr Giesen said he was supposed
to undertake the solo trip
last year, but missed the pre-race
time on the water to qualify for
the 2017 Trans-Atlantic Challenge
due to boat repairs.
Instead, he completed the
challenge in a team row with
independent rowers from the
Faroe Islands earlier this year.
In spite of the team losing
two members early on, a broken
water maker, a busted steering
system and a stomach virus, Mr
Giesen said the journey had been
an amazing adventure.
“The positives far outweigh the
bad. It just adds to it.
“The goal [for next month’s
trip] is just to get across for me.
I find that if you go racing or try
to break records, you don’t want
to go back. I don’t want to ruin
my adventure.”
Mr Giesen’s cause, raising
money for Australian mental
health charities Black Dog and
Bravehearts as well as New
Zealand’s Victim Support, has a
personal connection.
He lost his aunt and two close
friends to suicide.
“It’s something that shaped me
and changed me a lot. It’s something
I’m still dealing with.
“I’ve actually got both my
mates’ anniversaries while I’m
out there.”
Mr Giesen said people could
donate to the cause, or become
a sponsor, through his website
www.thebluerower.com.
He also hoped to regularly
update the Blue Rower Facebook
and Instagram pages with videos
“so you can watch me slowly
deteriorate.”
Taylors Mistake Surf Lifesaving
Club administrator Adrian
Mouldey said he had known Mr
Giesen “since he was a nipper”
when he joined the club at nineyears-old.
Mr Giesen, a qualified lifeguard,
had competed in kayaking
at the national level since he
was 16.
“We’re very proud of him,
what he’s done and what he’s
going to do,” Mr Mouldey said.
Neighbours in bus stop dispute
• By Matt Salmons
TWO SUMNER neighbours
want an amicable outcome to a
disagreement over the location
of a Nayland St bus stop –
moving it further along the
street.
Debbie Hicks of 109 Nayland
St wants the bus stop moved
because passengers can see into
her house, while Eoin and Sue
Richdale of 107 want it to stay
where it is
to retain onstreet
parking.
Both parties
presented
their argument
to the
Linwood-
Central-
Darrell Latham
Heathcote
Community
Board on Wednesday.
During the presentations, the
neighbours proposed a third
option: Moving the stop further
along the street. An option they
agreed on.
Board member Darrell
Latham said a decision had been
tabled until early next year in
light of the new option, so city
council staff could investigate its
viability and report back to the
board.
Both parties have legitimate
concerns, Dr Latham said.
“The council will need to
look at that to see if it’s a viable
option.
“If there’s a possibility that
both parties can be satisfied, let’s
look at it,” Dr Latham said.
The neighbours declined to
comment to the Bay Harbour
News as they did not want to
jeopardise the chance of an
amicable outcome.
If moving the stop further
along the street was not an
option, board members would
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
PROPOSAL: This bus stop on Nayland St may be moved further along the street.
be forced to make a decision “on
the status quo,” he said.
In 2009, the bus stop was
moved 4m west when vehicle
access to 107 Nayland St was
changed, removing one onstreet
parking spot.
Then in 2016, the bus stop
moved again, closer to the
Menzies St intersection, to
address safety concerns raised
in the community. This left the
same number of parking spots.
That move placed it directly
alongside the house at 109
Nayland St, which at the time
was uninhabited.
Then in December, the Hicks
requested the city council move
the stop back to its pre-2016
location due to concerns over
on-street parking and privacy
concerns.
To do so would result in the
loss of two on-street parking
spaces as a no-stopping zone was
suggested for the area between
the bus stop and the Menzies St
intersection to maintain sight
lines.
DRIVE TO the conditions.
That is the message from
police as the wet weather in
the region continues.
A 51-year-old was lucky to
walk away with minor injuries
after failing to drive to the
conditions.
The man was travelling past
the Hilltop Tavern towards
Little River and tried to make
a moderate left-hand turn
before the van tipped over
yesterday about 10am.
He received a sore shoulder
and was dropped home by an
ambulance.
Akaroa Senior Constable
Tim Johnson said the van was
extensively damaged.
“The message here is
obviously drive to the
conditions. If it’s rainy with
a wet road, slow down a bit.
A witness was following him
and he wasn’t speeding, he
was probably just going a bit
fast in the heavy rain.”
Bay Harbour
has a new
reporter
BAY HARBOUR News has a
new reporter – Louis Day.
Louis takes over from Matt
Salmons, who as you will see
alongside is now a stay-at-home
dad.
Louis hails from Croydon in
south London, but he has been
in New Zealand
for just over 10
years. He came
out here with
his family to
live in Central
Otago.
“New Zealand
was a culture
Louis Day
shock at first.
Honesty boxes
and people you
did not know smiling at you
were completely foreign concepts
to us,” he said.
Louis joins the team after
completing his postgraduate
diploma in journalism at
Massey University.
If you will see Louis out and
about in the Bay Harbour area
say hello.
And if you have a news story
or want some publicity for your
community group or club, call
Miner, journo to stay-at-home dad
Matt Salmons’ working life has stretched from mining to being a reporter on Bay Harbour News. Last week he put
down his pen and pad to become a stay-at-home dad. We follow Matt’s new adventure with 10-month-old daughter
Vittoria in a weekly column
I’VE ALWAYS wanted to be
a dad.
I haven’t always been great
with kids or anything, but it
seemed like a damn fine idea.
However, I’d never thought
I would like to be a full-time
dad.
So I surprised myself when
I said yes so quickly to my
wife Laura’s question – “would
you want to be a stay-at-home
dad?”
I had zero need to think it
over – it was a decision I made
subconsciously. After all, I love
my darling daughter Vittoria,
what can I say?
With our country’s beloved
first-man Clarke Gayford
leading the charge, I certainly
felt confident in my decision.
And with Mr Gayford
retiring from the illustrious
post, dare I say it, maybe I
could become the nation’s
leading cardigan-draped
crusader?
But as the time for me to
take over draws nearer, the
actual logistics of what’s
coming become apparent.
Laura has spent more than
“A local team for local people”
10 months learning exactly
what to do and when.
Even with all the changes
in baby, she just seems to
know what Vittoria needs and
when she needs it. When she’s
hungry, tired, thirsty or has
a dirty nappy. Well, actually,
that last one’s pretty obvious.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not
saying I’m useless here. A day
or two after Vittoria was born,
I’d already changed 200 per
cent more nappies and been
to more kids events than my
grandfather and he had six
kids.
I’ve also looked after Vittoria
on my tod for extended
periods, too, just not every day
in the same way Laura has.
No, my concern is that I’m
essentially coming into a new
job, with a boss who literally
has no empathy (because I
need to teach her that) and I’m
only qualified to do it parttime.
So I’ll be taking notes and
gearing myself for a new
challenge.
I’m sure having the most
important thing in my life
scream at me for hours
will work as well as onthe-job
training.
IF YOU need anything from a
fridge to a chainsaw you will
be able to borrow it from a new
library planned for Lyttelton.
Organisers of the upcoming
Lyttelton Library of Tools and
Things, or LLOTT, are confident
that the Project Lyttelton
initiative will launch in mid-
December.
The library will work on a
subscription basis, either a $40
yearly fee or $20 and a Timebank
credit. Tools could
be booked out for a week at a
time.
Volunteer and Project Lyttelton
board member Stewart
Henry said the LLOTT team
would be at the December 8
Lyttelton Farmers Market for
expressions of interest.
He said the group already had
51 people who had confirmed
their intention to subscribe on
launch.
“We hope to double that on
December 8.”
The project had been in the
works for more than a year,
however, Mr Henry said recent
“passionate” additions to the volunteer
organising team had seen
the time line jump forward.
“It’s taking off now.”
As well as Mr Henry, LLOTT’s
staff included volunteer
Kevin Hurl and activator Paul
Dietsche.
Mr Henry said the launch
was dependent on finalising
the booking software and
uploading the contact details
of those who were interested in
subscribing.
Once launched, Mr Henry
said the library would be based
in a lock-up underneath the
board room. When a tear-drop
flag featuring LLOTT’s logo was
flying, people could come in to
“We’ve bought quite a few
tools, mostly battery operated,
and we’ve had more than 50
items donated to us recently.”
The group’s inventory
included gardening tools such as
spades, mowers and chainsaws,
construction tools like drills
and saws and mechanical tools
including vehicle ramps.
Mr Henry said they “also have
things” like tables and bar fridges.
User feedback would dictate
what else the group stocked.
“We’ll see what return we get
and use our money on chosen
items.”
He said LLOTT would
also provide safety gear and
instruction on how to safely use
the items.
Big line-up for
disaster symposium
• By Julia Evans
A LINE up of disaster
recovery and regeneration
experts will be speaking
at the Canterbury
Earthquakes Recovery
Symposium next week.
Among the line-up of
speakers at
the two-day
event will be
urban planner
specialising
in disaster
recovery and
catastrophe risk
management
Laurie Johnson;
academic
researcher
and designer
Barnaby
filmmaker Gerard Smyth;
Darmstadt University PhD
researcher Andreas Huck
from Germany; and Ngāi
Tahu chief executive Arihia
Bennett.
The event has had a
turbulent history. The
Government spent
$200,000 planning,
the event when then-
What’s your view on the
Residential Unit Overlay
District Plan Changes
Section 71 Proposal?
Let us know your views on the Proposal to use section 71 of the Greater
Christchurch Regeneration Act 2016 to make amendments to the
Christchurch District Plan.
The amendments would:
Canterbury Rebuild
Minister Gerry Brownlee
dropped it altogether in
November 2016.
More than 50 speakers, a
venue and accommodation
was organised. This
event, held at Canterbury
University, cost about
$250,000
and is being
split between
Government
and the city
council.
The forum,
announced
earlier this
year by Greater
Christchurch
Regeneration
Minister Megan
Woods and
Mayor Lianne
Dalziel, will be a chance
to share lessons from all
sectors involved in the
recovery.
“More than 300
participants have been
invited to the symposium.
These people are primarily
leaders of organisations
that could be impacted by
future disasters, or involved
• provide clarity and support to areas (known as the Residential Unit
Overlay) where the risk of flooding is predominantly from sea level rise
• permit people with vacant sites (where houses have been demolished
since the earthquakes) in the Residential Unit Overlay to rebuild
houses of a similar size to what was there without requiring a resource
consent.
The Proposal, developed by Christchurch City Council, has been
submitted to the Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration who is
inviting your views.
Anyone can make a written comment, which must be received by
5.00pm, Monday, 26 November 2018.
in recovery efforts,” Dr
Woods said.
Ms Dalziel said it’s going
to be a valuable event.
“The event has already
attracted a huge amount
of interest from across the
sector, which shows that
there is a real desire to
share our recovery lessons,
so that others benefit from
our experiences when
another disaster strikes,
and more importantly, that
we don’t see a repeat of
any of our mistakes,” Ms
Dalziel said.
There will also be youth
in disaster recovery, mental
health lessons, arts, culture
and heritage, community
leadership, infrastructure
recovery, social recovery
and business recovery
discussions.
Mike McRoberts from
Newshub will facilitate
many of the discussions.
The event is invitationonly.
However, it will
be live streamed and
slides and videos will be
put on the EQ Recovery
Learning website – www.
eqrecoverylearning.org.
The Proposal can be viewed with more information, and written
comments made online at: www.dpmc.govt.nz/residential-unit-overlay
Also, the Proposal can be viewed and written comment forms are
available at Christchurch City Council service centres and libraries, and
the main office of Selwyn and Waimakariri District Councils during normal
business hours.
Sustainability key
to organic farming
SCHOOLS
There’s something for
everyone in the realm of
organic farming but as far
as Bill Martin is concerned,
it’s all about sustainability.
The Training College
Manager at Lincoln
University’s Biological
Husbandry Unit Organics
Trust (BHU) is happy to see
a surge in enthusiasm for
organic food production
as younger generations
become more aware of
environmental concerns.
He says the growing
popularity of organic
production in recent years
means that graduates are
now taking what they have
learned into a broader
range of sectors.
“It’s not just about
growing, wholesaling
and retailing food anymore. They’re
going into schools and teaching primary
and secondary schoolers about the
importance of sustainable farming and
gardening and really starting to embed the
philosophy into the education system.”
As far as conventional agricultural
practices are concerned, he says farmers
should be encouraged to optimise their
production, rather than maximise it at the
expense of the environment.
“We need to change our agricultural
paradigm and re-evaluate our priorities.”
Mr Martin says those interested in a
career in organics should enrol in the
one-year Diploma in Agri-Food Production
course, which is open to students either
with or without university entrance.
Introduced last year, it includes Tikanga
and Mahinga Kai components and can
lead to employment in organic primary
production or other sectors related
to organics, especially education and
hospitality.
“The course offers a good grounding
in the principles of organic agriculture,
teaching the philosophies and histories
of organics and providing practical
knowledge of how they are applied,” Mr
Martin says.
Apply now for the Diploma in Organic
Agri-Food Production and begin studying
in February 2019.
Pets big day out
Diamond Harbour School’s annual Pet Day was held during Cup and
Show Week. Pupils brought a range of animals to school, including dogs,
chickens, ducks and goats. A bake sale was also held to fundraise for the
SPCA. About r$200 was raised.
Grow a career
in organics
Lincoln University’s Diploma in Organic Agri-Food Production will prepare
you for work in the organic sector or your own garden or smallholdings. It’s
a full-time, one-year programme that covers the theory and practice behind
contemporary organic agri-food production.
Join us in February to find out what growing organically on an agricultural
scale really means.
DIAMOND HARBOUR resident
Claire Brown’s new blog series about the
experiences of her cat Weasley has been
well received by the community.
Ms Brown published the
second episode in the series,
The Rumble in Ranui, which
has received rave reviews on the
Diamond Harbour Community
Facebook page.
Ms Brown said her blog has
been the release she has needed
in coping with her multiple
sclerosis.
“I got Weasley as a kitten and
I only had him a few days and
I tripped over him because, at
the time, I didn’t realise but I had multiple
sclerosis. I tripped over him because of the
MS and after that, I ended up in hospital
for quite some time.”
Ms Brown said the incident was what
gave her the idea to start writing a blog
through the eyes of Weasley.
“It kind of occurred to me that Weasley
might feel a bit bad about tripping me over
and sending me to hospital, Weasley kind
of over thinks things and he has anxiety
issues amongst other things.”
Claire Brown
Ms Brown has also written more specifically
on her experience with MS. She said
that it was not unusual for people to have
MS for several years before being diagnosed.
She hopes her story will help people
in identifying the warning signs.
“I had MS for about four years
before it was diagnosed. I started
to get some weird sort of symptoms
like leg weakness and extreme
tiredness. It just got worse
and worse and I actually ended
up having major spinal surgery.”
Following surgery, Ms Brown’s
symptoms continued to get worse
and it was not until a year after
surgery that doctors diagnosed
her MS.
“By the time I was diagnosed
it was a relief to find out what it was. I
went to so many different specialists and
alternative therapists which did absolutely
nothing and at one point I thought I was
going mad.”
Ms Brown said since being diagnosed
her symptoms had not improved but the
diagnosis had helped to put her mind at
rest.
Dredge
leaves
port after
finishing
work
THE SHIP Fairway, which has
been involved in Lyttelton’s
channel deepening project, left
for Singapore at the weekend.
One of the world’s largest
dredges, she has been working
in the harbour for the past 12
weeks. Her dredging has been
completed.
Fairway has lengthened
the channel by about 2.5km,
widened it by 20m and deepened
it by up to 2m.
The project has already paid
dividends with the Rio de
Janeiro, the largest container
ship to ever call at Lyttelton
Port, arriving last month, said
Lyttelton Port Company chief
executive Peter Davie.
“We know Canterbury freight
volumes are forecast to double in
the next 15 years, and container
ships have doubled in size in
the last 10. We are thrilled the
project is nearly complete and
we are now able to accommodate
larger vessels,” he said.
“The project secures the future
for importers and exporters
in the Canterbury region, as
it means the port remains
competitive for international
shipping lines. The region’s
exporters and importers will
continue to have direct access
to global markets and goods,
competitive freight networks
and cost-effective access.”
“The dredging project,
alongside our current
reclamation of Te Awaparahi
Bay, which is part of our longterm
plan to move container
terminal operations to the east
away from the community, gives
our customers confidence their
growing cargo requirements will
be met.”
New film on Hinewai Reserve
• By Matt Salmons
AKAROA’S HINEWAI Reserve
will feature in an upcoming
documentary by transtasman
film company Happen Films.
The 30-40min film will focus
on the regeneration of native
bush in the reserve.
There is still no set release
date, but Happen Films hopes to
have its premiere in the Banks
Peninsula area by the end of
March.
The two-person film company
is made up of Little River’s
Antoinette Wilson and Jordan
Osmand who is based in
Australia.
Wilson said the pair started
making films in 2015. Their first
project, A Simpler Way: Crisis
as Opportunity, was a crowdfunded
look at how people could
live within the means of earth’s
resources.
“The film was made free-toview
on YouTube, where it’s now
had over one million views,” she
said.
Wilson said she and Osmond
made films to tell stories “about
BUSH: The Happen Films crew set up Hinewai Reserve
caretaker Hugh Wilson with a microphone in the bush.
inspiring people and projects”,
doing their bit to address “the
environmental, social and economic
crises the world is facing.”
Their most recent film, Living
the Change, was released in
March. Ms Wilson said she
hoped to organise screenings on
Banks Peninsula soon.
While filming Living the
Change, the filmmakers
discovered Hinewai Reserve.
They wanted to tell the reserve’s
story as it and 73-year-old
caretaker Hugh Wilson were
“entirely in line with our ethos
Fire rages, homes at risk
and approach to life.”
Mr Wilson and his team spent
more than 30 years regenerating
farmland back to native bush
with minimal interference. Only
introduced species that cause
the most damage were actively
removed and controlled.
The filmmakers said Mr Wilson
put them “to shame” with
his fitness, but he and his team
had “generously accommodated”
them for the shoot, which finished
on November 12.
“We came away incredibly
inspired by Hugh’s reserve
management philosophies, his
lifestyle and his deeply held
principles.”
Wilson said the Hinewai film
was fully funded by a friend, “a
huge luxury” for the filmmakers
who normally relied on donations
and crowd-funding.
Wilson and Osmond will work
with an editor and composer for
the next two months to finish
the Hinewai film while also
starting work on their next short
film series, a look at urban sustainability.
ABOUT 60 people remembered
21 Addington railway workshop
return from World War 2.
The special ceremony at
Ferrymead Heritage Park was a
great success, said organiser Jude
Turner.
Augustas O’Malley, who was
one of the 21 railway workers,
was killed on board the HMS
Jupiter after hitting a Dutch mine
off the coast of Indonesia.
After working as an electric
plater for the Addington railway
workshops, Mr O’Malley died
in February 1942 at the age of
22 after joining the navy in July
1941.
Mr O’Malley was represented
by relative, Denise O’Malley-
Grey, at the commemoration.
Mrs O’Malley-Grey said the
memorial service gave the closure
needed for her great uncle.
“For me, as part of Gus’s
family, it honestly felt like he had
been brought home to rest.”
Mrs O’Malley-Grey said she
had been on a “journey” in
getting to know her great uncle
since she was sent one of his
memorial medals along with his
navy records.
“He was a stoker in the boiler
room, so he was quite in the
middle of it when there was the
massive explosion that hit the
ship, and of course those guys in
the boiler room wouldn’t have
stood a chance.”
His body was never recovered.
“He was killed in 1942,
his mother didn’t receive the
telegram till 1945. His father died
in 1944 not even knowing he had
lost his son.”
Sumner Lifeboat
Experiencing a night-time rescue
Sumner Lifeboat crew
trainee Howard Nicholls
shares his experience of
taking part in a recent
search and rescue exercise
A RADIO message sent back
to base on a recent search and
rescue exercise called for an
immediate response.
The message: SAREX,
SAREX, the casualty has been
located on rocks at Harris Bay,
unresponsive and requiring
immediate evacuation.
There was no time to waste.
The Sumner Lifeboat crew
must be prepared to deal with
any scenario.
This exercise presented quite a
few challenges – the ‘rescue’ was
happening at night in a remote
bay with no light.
The difficulties were
compounded by a 1-2m swell
onto the rocks, and kelp in the
area that might foul the rescue
vessels.
Two vessels were tasked to the
scene: Blue Arrow Rescue, the
big twin-engine, 12.45m rescue
boat, and Southern Trust Rescue,
a powerful, two-person jet ski
SAVIOUR: The Southern Trust Rescue jet ski, a powerful two-person jet ski fitted with a rescue
sled.
fitted with a rescue sled.
Blue Arrow Rescue’s big
spotlights scanned the shoreline
and located the casualty, then
the Southern Trust Rescue jet ski
dropped a crew member onto the
rocks to attend the casualty and
assess the situation.
The casualty (a manikin) was
transferred from the rocks to
Blue Arrow Rescue via the jet
ski. Then a new challenge – the
casualty had ‘stopped breathing’.
Several crew members
performed CPR and had to
keep it going all the way back to
Sumner Lifeboat Station.
While the action was
happening on the water, the onshore
team had been planning
how to get the casualty off the
boat and into the care of medical
staff.
Blue Arrow Rescue came
straight onto the boat trolley and
up the ramp, where shoreside
and on-board crew worked
together to get the casualty to the
medics.
Mission accomplished.
This was followed by a debrief
on what went well and what the
areas to improve were, a quick
beer, then off home ready for
work the next morning – and
better prepared for a real nighttime
call-out.
The costs of owning and
maintaining three modern
rescue craft, and of training
and equipping about 26 crew
members, are growing yearly.
Very little funding is provided
by the Government, so the
Sumner Lifeboat Institution
needs your help – financial or ‘in
kind’ – to enable it to continue
to bring family members home
safely to their loved ones.
Plan to grow farmers’ market
• By Louis Day
DIAMOND HARBOUR held its
first farmers’ market in years at
the weekend.
Edible bouquets of flowers,
beeswax wraps and organic
shortbread among other arts
and crafts were all on offer at the
Dark Star Café.
Event organiser Donna
Richardson said there were five
stalls in the first market which is
expected to grow rapidly over the
coming weeks.
“We are thinking it could be
like a combination of shabby
chic, crafts, arts and hopefully
more produce over the summer.
It hasn’t really got that much
produce yet so it’s more of a
market than a farmers’ market at
the moment.”
Vendors are not charged to sell
their goods at the event.
“The more people we have the
merrier it is. It would be great to
have something like Lyttelton has
because people that can’t make
the Saturday Lyttelton market
could come to ours.”
Mrs Richardson said the
market was the perfect platform
for people in the community to
showcase some of their talents.
“Sometimes you know
someone but you have no idea
what they are capable of. On
Sunday, we learnt that there
were a lot of creative people here
and I think there are a lot more
creative people in the area.”
Mrs Richardson said the
market would work in tandem
with Sprig next month.
“From the second week of
December we have Sprig starting
at 1pm and the market ending
at midday. People could grab
something to eat at the market
and then go and listen to some of
the music in the park.”
•The market is on Sunday,
9am-noon.
Sumner’s bad run continues
in cricket championship
• By Louis Day
SUMNER SUFFERED their
third defeat of the season in their
top-of-the-table clash with local
rivals Heathcote.
In spite of two consecutive oneday
defeats, Sumner player-coach
Dan Vann remained positive.
“We are still reasonably
confident, we have just had two
bad weeks, the last week we had
to play on a wet pitch and that
didn’t turn out too well. This
week we just dropped too many
catches and didn’t bowl straight
enough.”
Heathcote batted first at St
Leonards Park and made an
aggressive start with 72/2 after 10
overs.
Heathcote’s Matt House did
most of the damage with 113,
while several players made starts.
Sumner’s Nawid Mohamady
bowled well, but it was Jonny
Percasky (2/41) and Dan Vann
(3/55) who pulled the run rate
back to put Heathcote under
some pressure.
In spite of a resurgence from
Sumner, Heathcote still managed
to finish on an imposing 324/8.
Vann said their next training
would focus on fielding after
several dropped catches from
Sumner.
Sumner made an equally positive
start with the bat and were in a
better position than Heathcote at
the 10 over mark on 82/2.
GOT HIM: Sumner’s Jonny Percasky (middle) celebrates with
his teammates after getting a wicket in their defeat to rivals
Heathcote.
SPORTS
However, wickets fell too
regularly, meaning the large
chase became too much.
Opener and overseas player
Tom Davie (36) and Dan Vann
(30) were the main contributors
but Sumner eventually fell well
short to be all out for 163.
After what Vann described as
“another bad day at the office,” he
remains confident they can reach
the finals.
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
“The top is pretty close. If we
win the next two games, we’ll
be in the semis and more then
likely see them (Heathcote) in the
final.”
Sumner will look to bounce
back and show their early season
form when they play Lancaster
Park at the weekend and Burnside
the following week to secure
a semi-final berth.
Sumner’s Presidential team
was the only one not to play over
the long weekend as The Mighty
enjoyed a substantial win over
Riccarton and The Blues beat
Marist-Harewood.
MEMBERS OF the Sumner
Surf Life Saving Club will take
part in the upcoming National
Lifeguard School.
Lifeguard Jake Simpson will
be upskilled to Surf Life Saving
New Zealand’s highest qualification,
Advanced Lifeguard
Award.
Fellow Sumner lifeguards Kate
Suter, Tom Denman and Toni
Cranko will instruct and mentor
at the school.
Twenty lifeguards from
around the country will be
learning about some of the more
difficult and demanding emergency
situations surf lifeguards
can face, including mass rescue
scenarios, helicopter operations,
search and rescue operations
and working alongside other
agencies including NZ Police,
Fire and Emergency, and St
John in complex scenarios and
technical rescues.
The school takes place from
December 7 to 9, at Fitzroy
Beach, New Plymouth, where
candidates will be taught theory
and practical skills, run through
acted scenarios, and tested physically
and mentally, to attain the
Advanced Lifeguard Award.
Surf Life Saving New Zealand
national education manager
Belinda Slement said there was
46 applications for the 20 spots
at the school, so attendees were
“the cream of the crop.”
“They’re already out there sav-
at last year’s National
Lifeguard School.
ing lives on our beaches before
they reach this school, but going
to this level will ultimately help
their local beaches a lot safer.”
Mrs Slement said the intensive
and action-packed school gives
the volunteers the chance to try
the new skills and see how situations
might play out, with expert
instructors able to guide them
and talk them through examples
from actual rescues.
“Around the country, surf lifeguards
get faced with a varied
level of complex situations, and
these advanced lifeguards will
be skilled in how to direct their
patrol members when challenging
situations happen.’’
Last season 5200 volunteer
SLSNZ lifeguards nationally
clocked up more than 230,000
patrol hours on the beach,
carried out 1062 rescues for
people in life-threatening
situations and helped another
2375 people in potentially
dangerous situations.

WITH 34 days until Christmas,
the shops are filling with people
frantically searching for the perfect
But this year, Tower Junction
there has not been a standout musthave
This year there was no way to rank
the top-10 toys, so Toyworld has
picked a range of best-sellers.
Ms Gray said now until Christmas,
the store was expecting to get
busier.
“Especially Show Weekend,
people realise Christmas is just
REAL ESTATE
Chance of a lifetime…iconic Pile Bay bach
257 Camp Bay Road, Pile Bay, Lyttelton Harbour
Deadline Sale: Tuesday 4 December 2018, 5pm
2 Bedrooms | Listing #8007
We have here for sale an iconic Pile
Bay bach, one of a cluster of nine baches
set right on the beachfront on 4 hectares
of shared (eighth share) rural zoned
freehold land.
This wee 2 bedroom honey has been
lovingly and meticulously restored and is
now ready for her new owner. The bach is
very cosy and has a large deck to relax on,
a spacious living area and a good utility
space at the rear of the property.
This is classic Kiwiana, totally unique
and only approx. 40 minute drive from
Christchurch, imagine arriving, having a
swim and relaxing on the deck, no lawns
to mow and no gardens to weed.
Due to the location of these baches
they are very sheltered from the Easterly
wind and are North/West facing for all
day sun.
The beach is very safe and swimmable
at all tides, excellent boating and fishing
right on your door step.
The other bonus is a eighth share
in approx. 20 hectares of coastal land
hugging the coast towards Camp Bay.
This is simple uncomplicated living and
is off the grid and although there are nine
baches in this community most of the
time you will have the place to yourselves.
There is good storage underneath for
the dinghy and Kayaks etc. There are
many memories to be had here and this
really is a stunning spot in every way.
Please Note: This house has a area for
washing but not a proper bathroom but
is listed under this category for listing
purposes...
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
on a deal with IAG on February
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
