RYLAN HOWE | STAFF WRITER Growing tradition Tannenbaum Christmas Tree Farm spreads cheer The Scotch pine is king of the Christmas trees. At Tannenbaum Christmas Tree Farm in Milford that statement holds true with white pine coming in second place as far as popularity. It was 30 years ago that those two tree species were first planted on the farm by owners Dave and Marcia Stoever. That first batch grew for about six years before being harvested. They have since expanded from those original 1,000 trees to about 6,000 across six acres. They’ve also added Fraser fir, concolor fir, and Colorado blue spruce to their Christmas tree inventory. They continue to plant 1,000 trees each year to keep a consistent rotation of their inventory. Initiated as a side business to start a college fund for their kids and a tropical vacation fund for themselves, the Stoevers have kept at it all these years because of the joy they get seeing customers create and continue a family tradition. “We both grew up with families who had live trees and so we really like seeing people coming back and kind of becoming friends that we talk to every year. That’s pretty neat,” Dave said. “This is now our 24th year selling trees so we’re getting second generations coming out now.” They’ve had customers as young as five-dayold infants to a great-grandpa over 100 years old visit the tree farm. And no matter what age, Marcia added, everyone is usually happy when they visit. “It is really fun to see families that started out with tiny children and those children now bringing their own,” Marcia said. “It’s fun to see families evolve. It’s also fun to get brand new ones too that have never done this but want to start a new tradition.” For anyone in that camp, the Stoevers have a couple tips for keeping that first tree looking fresh all season long. Most important is getting the tree in water as soon as possible. Marcia estimated a tree would last for two months if kept properly hydrated. Another watering tip is starting out with warm water. “They’ll take about a gallon per day for the first few days then they get saturated and slow down,” Marcia said. “You don’t want to forget watering because then it will seal off and not take any more water.” If that would happen then the trunk would need to be trimmed down and the process started over again. Over the course of the year the Stoevers spend time maintaining their inventory, including shaping and trimming trees so they grow fuller. Still, not all trees grow the same. So the Stoevers cut up several each year that won’t make great Christmas trees and make them into wreaths of different sizes to sell instead. They also sell their own unique tree stands. There is also always free cider and cookies available inside the shop. As far as the trees go, customers will have until Dave and Marcia Stoever own Tannenbaum Christmas Tree Farm in Milford. They are open for business now through Sunday, Dec. 9. They started growing Christmas trees 30 years ago.
