Side Trips
I’m not certain that I would enjoy warm
weather during the holidays, but I think I’m
willing to give it a try. As a kid, playing in
the snow is a wonderful adventure; as an adult
the reality of “white
Christmas” often comes
with travel woes and
frustrations.
Our family spent the
week of Thanksgiving
in Maui, where
the Christmas décor
went up at our hotel
during our stay and
the shopping village
just down the street
was all decked out in
lights and garland. As
has been my tradition

while preparing turkey and all the sides from
my home kitchen, we didn’t watch the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade this year, but went
on a snorkeling adventure instead. When the
boat captain wished us a happy Thanksgiving,
I did a double take. I had forgotten.
“Just another day in paradise,” the captain
said. He also told me he was born and raised in
Hawaii, so sunny and 85 does equate with the
holidays for him.
Not the same with a few servers and store
clerks I spoke with. Most were Midwest transplants,
living a tropical lifestyle for the past two
or three years, and several were ready to return
to the Midwest.
“I miss the cold,” one said, and another
shared, “This was awesome for a while, but it’s
time to go home.”
When we sat down to dinner Thanksgiving
night, a traditional turkey dinner was the featured
special. It just didn’t sound quite right. I
asked about the catch of the day instead. When
in Hawaii, eat mahi-mahi.
And embrace the beautiful weather, no matter
the season.
