Supermarkets are the heart of our communities. Often one of the largest employers in an area, avid supporters of local schools, clubs and individuals and a place where you bump into old friends and neighbours. And of course, the place where we go to fuel our tummies. In the eastern suburbs of Christchurch, five New World supermarkets proudly boast to being locally owned and completely locally orientated. Collectively the New Worlds’ in Kaiapoi, Prestons, Ferry Road, Stanmore Road and Redcliffs employ more than 440 people – a good percentage of them school students getting their first taste of employment. Others have been working at their stores for decades. Giving back to the community is at the heart of the New World DNA. Each store donates thousands of dollars’ worth of goods to locals in addition to supporting the Foodstuffs South Island Community Trust. So far this financial year, the five stores have contributed over $69,000 back into their local communities to support educational, community and sporting activities. New World Prestons Owner Julia Spence loves that her supermarket is a local hub. “It’s so nice that we can contribute to the local area by offering support for fundraisers and events, but also as a place where people can come and feel ‘a part’ of the local community. We see so many people - mums, elderly, friends who bump into people they know in the store who all have a catch up.” Like so many in the East, the earthquake story for New World has also been one of rebuilding. New World Kaiapoi, Redcliffs and Ferry Road rebuilt, and they did it fast, recognising that bringing back a quality and essential shopping option was vital to the community. Prestons is a new store to meet the growth in the area post-quake and Stanmore has undergone significant refurbishment. For each though, while the new or refreshed spaces are nice – it’s all about people. The locals who work in the supermarkets and most of all, the customer who chooses to make New World their shopping and community hub. giFt wrapping voLunTeer STyLe The present wrapping booth at Eastgate Shopping Centre is ready to help in full force this holiday season to wrap your holiday gifts. Volunteers from charities around the city are taking turns to man the post and help make your holiday tasks a little bit simpler. Each of the charities is a cornerstone in the city, which offer services for mental health, family support, child initiatives, senior care and so much more. Eastgate Shopping Centre strongly supports these charities efforts with this wrapping booth fundraising initiative. The centre provides the wrapping paper, tape and scissors, while the actual wrapping itself is done by charity volunteers. Most of the charities involved have a long standing relationship with the shopping centre and have worked there for other events throughout the years. This tradition is one that will carry over for year after year as Eastgate Shopping Centre and our local charities join forces and support each other for the betterment of the community. Don’t forget to have your picture taken with Santa and their magic photographer this year. That picture will last a lifetime and now you can put that timeless photo in a snow globe or on a mug or duplo brick or a variety of merchandise which shares that family moment.
