PEGASUS POST
The neglect of New Brighton and its Coastal Community
has reached a point where rumblings and chatter have
turned to public anger.
These suburbs did feel that the new organiSaturday -ion
Regenerate Christchurch gave some hope to the residents
that some fair progress would be made to re-instate the
areas like the New Brighton CBD to better than pre-
Earthquake conditions, but seven years on, lots of money
has been spent on biased surveys and pre-feasibility studies
and, despite promises, nothing of substance has actually
happened.
This is very frustrating when so many of the very sound
proposals would also help Christchurch, and Canterbury in
general with spinoff economic benefits.
Regenerate Christchurch has the power to acquire land
compulsorily where land banking is holding back the
development of an area – New Brighton CBD needs a
very close look in this regard because the area lacks a
community centre at its heart. You have to ask why New
Brighton is one of the few Christchurch suburbs that
doesn’t have a facility that would be great for everyone
from day one, including the artisan residents.
In any development for the area, young people should
be the focus. The kids who get involved in sports and
recreational activities stay motivated and out of trouble, but
so many are having to go out of these suburbs for training
which is a cost that some families cannot meet, so many
simply miss out.
Protecting the Estuary’s edge must be the greatest priority
for the immediate future as so many residents are living in
fear of an uncertain future. The whole job to hold the edge
has been scoped out and costed a long time ago, and it’s
quite affordable considering what the benefits of certainty
delivered to the property-owning citizens would be. Letting
Mother Nature decide the futures of so many families is
not an option.
The area deserves more trees, a flat water sports facility
plus picnic and recreation areas. New Brighton is also
an ideal area for concerts and festivals, free from noise,
transport or parking hassles.
On behalf of the Forgotten East, my message to Regenerate
Christchurch and the City Council is plain and simple. Don’t
just canvas and consult, please listen – the people over here
have some wonderful, pragmatic ideas.
Robyn and Peter Thew are celebrating owning
Burwood Pharmacy for 20 years this month. We
have survived in the middle of the community,
without a medical practice next door, by
constantly improving our services and trying
new ideas. We know most of our customers by
name and provide personal and confidential
service. As owner operators we can tailor
ourselves to the needs of local community.
Robyn has been qualified as a pharmacist for
the past 33 years and has experience working
in hospital and community pharmacy, both
here and in the UK. She has also completed a
master’s in clinical pharmacy degree. Burwood
Pharmacy provides a full range of pharmacy
services including dispensing prescriptions,
providing medico blister packs, medicine
use reviews, smoking cessation, diet advice
(especially for diabetics) as well as stocking a
wide range of pharmacy medicines.
We also have an extensive range of amazing
gifts, jewellery, scarves and homeware. There
is something here for everyone, even Christmas
decorations, lights and candles. We also take
passport photos and can organize your dry
cleaning for you. There is plenty of parking just
outside the pharmacy.
For those last-minute gifts, pop in and we can
have them beautifully wrapped and ready to go
for no extra charge. Our loyalty card programme
is a draw card, as for every $300 you spend in
store you can earn a $20 gift voucher (equates to
6% discount). Customers are keen to use these
vouchers on something special for themselves,
often a lovely scarf.
When extending our shop in 2010 we were
hit by the earthquakes, but we have carried
on and still enjoy being part of the Burwood
Community. We welcome you to come and visit
Burwood Pharmacy for professional and friendly
pharmacy advice in a relaxed atmosphere.
