We told you so – residents
PACKED: A community group says the number of parking offences
recorded on Fenhall St in Russley prove residents’ only parking is needed.
RUSSLEY RESIDENTS say
they have been proved right
after more than 1300 parking
offences were reported in the
area this year.
The Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
reduced parking limits on
streets near the Airport Business
Park from 120min to
60min last year.
Avonhead Community Group
chairman Somnath Sarkar
Bagchi said residents warned
the city council last year that
halving the parking time limit
would not free up congested
parking in Russley.
The high number of offences
proved the 60min parking restrictions
would not work, Prof
Bagchi said.
People of Russley have been
fighting against car parking
near the Airport Business Park
since it opened in 2010, he said.
“Sixty minute parking means
you need to have enforcement
officers continuously,” Prof
Bagchi said.
“It is not very practical to put
an enforcement officer completely
dedicated for one road.”
“So you can imagine how
miserably it has failed.”
From January 1 to October
31, city council parking
enforcement officers recorded
1304 parking offences near
the Airport Business Park in
Russley.
A RESIDENT involved in
the fight against the planned
wealthy backer will support the
campaign against it.
Weedons Residents’
near the site don’t
have the money to
fight the proposed
Fulton Hogan
Mr Moore
expects the fight
against the quarry
to cost at least
$100,000.
A resource consent lodged
Simon
Moore
with Environment Canterbury
shows Fulton Hogan wants to
operate a quarry 6am-6pm,
Monday-Saturday.
Fulton Hogan has also
proposed running night
operations 150 days of the year.
Full quarry activities would
operate from 6pm-10pm and
truck movements would be
carried out from 10pm-6am.
PEOPLE LIVING near the planned quarry
in Templeton will need deep pockets to
fight Fulton Hogan.
The company has revealed its plans
for the quarry in its resource consent
application - and it wants to quarry overnight for up to 150 days
of the year.
If you live within earshot of the site it’s going to be a problem.
And then there’s the lights and the dust.
It will cost upwards of $100,000 to fight Fulton Hogan. Lawyers
don’t come cheap. Residents will need a strong legal team
because Fulton Hogan will certainly have one.
Whether Fulton Hogan actually wants to quarry through the
night remains to be seen. But it will be a bargaining chip at the
hearings.
Kyle Park eyed for mega facility
• By Anan Zaki
KYLE PARK could be the new
site for the Hornby community
mega centre tomorrow.
City council staff
recommended Kyle Park to the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board on Friday,
after conducting geotechnical
tests in September and October.
The Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
will vote on the city council
staff recommendation in an
extraordinary board meeting
tomorrow at 5.30pm.
The tests were conducted
after Denton Park was turned
down as the location for the
$35.7 million library, customer
services and leisure centre in
July, following strong opposition
from residents.
Board members also have the
choice of not making a decision
at this time and shortlist sites.
The geotechnical investigation
found that remediating the land
at Kyle Park, which was a
former landfill, will cost $5.8
million.
The city council previously
estimated that remediating Kyle
Park would cost between $9 and
$10 million.
A city council staff report
said the landfill material is
“significantly” contaminated “as
expected.”
The costs to resolve landfill
issues can be covered by the
existing project budget, the city
council staff report said.
The report also said the
delivery dates for the Hornby
mega centre and central city
Metro Sports Facility overlap,
which posed a risk of stretching
city council staff resources and
external industry capacity to
build two similar projects at the
same time.
Greater Hornby Residents’
Association chairman Marc
Duff is scheduled to make
a deputation at tomorrow’s
meeting.
HOPE: Kyle
Park could be
chosen as the
site for the
new Hornby
community
mega centre
tomorrow.
If Kyle Park gets the go-ahead,
consultation will begin early
next year on a partial change
to the reserve classification and
amendments to the management
plan.
Construction is planned to
begin in early 2021, with the
facility set to open at the end of
2022.
Mr MacDonald said parking
“The feedback I get [from
The board submitted in favour
“What we need staff to be really
Concerns over Riccarton Rd tree plan
• By Anan Zaki
TREES COULD soon line the
middle of Riccarton Rd – but
the city council proposal has
been slammed by residents.
It is planning to plant 27
columnar hornbeam trees along
the median of Riccarton Rd between
Clarence and Matipo Sts.
In a strongly worded letter to
Mayor Lianne
Dalziel, city
Residents’
said the
proposal is
“extremely
dangerous.”
Association
chairman
Garth Wilson
said about 80
Megan Woods
members were asked about the
trees and 90 per cent opposed it.
“Riccarton Rd is narrow
as it is and ambulances and
fire engines inevitably have to
travel down the middle of the
CONGESTED: Central Riccarton residents are unhappy at plans to plant 27 trees on the middle of
Riccarton Rd.
road because of traffic build
up, especially since there are
four sets of traffic lights from
Clarence St to Matipo St,” the
residents said.
Riccarton Rd is not wide
enough to be a boulevard, the
residents said.
“The new trees . . . will cast
a shadow on the southern side
of Riccarton Rd and prevent
sunlight reaching that side,
which in winter will lead to
damp and slippery footpaths for
pedestrians.”
The trees are part of stage two
of the Riccarton Rd upgrade,
scheduled to begin early next
year. Stage one of the project
included bus lanes from Deans
Ave to Harakeke St and was
fully completed last month.
But the bus lanes were deemed
“unusable” by Red Bus chief
executive Paul McNoe, who said
parked cars often blocked bus
lanes.
Plans for
Chokebore
underway
• By Anan Zaki
The city council said consultants
are still finalising detailed
design including discussion with
The detailed scope and documentation
will be finalised to allow
consents and selecting a main
is expected to start between
June and July next year.
Chokebore Lodge was once
owned by the well known
The lodge was damaged in the
A detailed engineering
Building Standard. All buildings
$195m mammoth motorway
It’s set to make
commuting safer and
easier by halving travel
time and reducing fatal
and serious crashes by
40 per cent. Julia Evans
checks in to see how
work is progressing on
the Southern Motorway
upgrade
MORE THAN 500,000 cu m
of earth and $195 million is
being poured into upgrading the
Southern Motorway.
The new 7.5km motorway will
extend from Halswell Junction
Rd to near Robinsons Rd on State
Highway 1 so commuters can
bypass Hornby and Templeton.
From Robinsons Rd to Rolleston,
Main South Rd will double to
four-lanes for 5km.
The project should halve time
between the city and Rolleston
from 30min to 15min.
It is also expected to reduce
fatal and serious crashes by 40
per cent by upgrading the third
and seventh most dangerous
intersections in Canterbury –
Weedon Ross Rd and SH1, as well
as Shands and Marshs Rds.
Those are just the two key
New Zealand Transport
the most recent milestone was
northbound traffic on Main
South Rd switched onto the new
Southbound traffic also made
the move last month.
“The traffic switch on SH1
will see some local road closures
Larcombs Rd at Main South Rd
Southern
the new southbound lanes on
SH1 are opened in 2019,” he
said.
“That will be the next biggest,
most visible stage of work when
we move all the two-way traffic.”
After that, work will start
on moving 10 58-tonne bridge
beams will be craned into place
at the Weedons Rd interchange.
They will complete the bridge,
which already has 10 beams in
“At the other end of things,
we’ll be starting on Springs Rd,”
Mr Griffiths said.
That work will take the project
into its final year.
“A new roundabout is being
constructed at the intersection of
Weedons Ross/Jones Rd, which
is due to be completed in the first
half of 2019.”
This year, work largely concentrated
on the Shands Rd
interchange. But there was also
considerable work at the Halswell
with 16 piers installed for the
Mr Griffiths said the biggest
challenge of the project has so far
been the “unknown.”
“Weather has been wetter than
average for the last couple of
years,” he said.
“And just dealing with the
unknown. We’ve found a few
old dumps that have been
contaminated with asbestos.”
But in spite of the weather
and unearthing of old dumps
that no one knew about, he said
everything was on track for the
early 2020 deadline.
“We’ve got this summer and
half of next summer, which is
a good thing. Not only is it the
rain we have to worry about, the
weather does need to be warm
and dry for the type of work we’re
doing.”
Plus Mr Griffiths said there
should be no more former
rubbish dumps to discover.
While the project will reduce
time and crashes, it will support
the south-west’s economic
growth with more than 35,000
people expected to move there in
the next 30 years.
As well as improving access
The project was mooted in
looked at the long-term transport
But it wasn’t until 2010 when
the concept was open for public
Draft parking policy flawed
Riccarton Bush
and Kilmarnock
Residents’
Association
chairman Tony
Simons talks
about car
parking
IF YOU work outside the central
city, don’t walk to work, or
ride buses or a push-bike, you
probably worry about parking.
We all know how parking
problems multiplied after the
earthquakes as businesses fled to
the suburbs.
Then the city council made
things worse by forcing higher
density residential developments
in many suburbs, but without
adequate provision for off-street
parking.
The city council finally
sought feedback on the problem
and now we have a draft
suburban parking policy that
proposes how these parking
problems in the suburbs will be
managed.
The policy suggests parking
restrictions be introduced after
parking occupancy in a street
averages more than 85 per cent at
peak times. Not 75 per cent. Not
PACKED: Riccarton Bush and Kilmarnock Residents’
Association chairman Tony Simons is unhappy with the draft
suburban car parking policy.
95 per cent. The magic number is
85 per cent.
Maybe there is good research
for this, but I think it’s more
likely a council planner has
decided 85 per cent sounds ‘about
right.’
There is also no definition of
when ‘peak times’ are. I guess it
means when parking demand
is high, but what if 85 per cent
is reached only once or twice a
month, or once a year, or maybe
only on sunny days?
Does that trigger parking
restrictions?
The policy is flawed.
We all know peak demand for
parking is not just defined by
the numbers of vehicles, but also
by the effect it has on residential
communities.
So instead of using a formula to
determine when parking should
be restricted, the city council
needs to talk to residents.
Listen to what we say. Don’t
rely on some city council planner
with a calculator.
Interestingly, the draft policy
actually says parking should be
managed on a case-by-case basis.
Then it contradicts itself by
proposing this dumb 85 per cent
rule. And of course if, by some
chance, a percentage guideline
was adopted (please no), how
exactly does the city council
propose monitoring it?
An under-resourced city
council parking unit can’t
adequately manage existing
parking restrictions.
How can it possibly count cars
at the same time?
Reader Gary Knight reacts
to Avonhead resident
Andrew Winton being
refused alcohol on his 18th
birthday
I read with intrigue and
disbelief the highlighted
situation relating to the refusal
of sale of liquor to one of legal
age. If the criteria by which any
liquor outlet determines the
legality of anyone purchasing
liquor is reliant on misleading
wording on a calendar
determined for this use, then
that deems the presence of
anomalies over this situation.
When presented with proof
of age documentation, a sense
of rationale by any liquor outlet
personnel is paramount. Within
this context, however, when
confronted with an unrealistic
situation when purchasing
liquor, the alternative to
contacting the media would
surely be to try an alternative
outlet.
CHANGE: A reader suggests Coach Corner change its calendar
after Andrew Winton was refused beer on his 18th birthday.
Maybe the Coach Corner
liquor shop could discard the
outmoded calendar and treat
customers on their merits, and
Andrew Winton could raise his
sights to additional liquor outlets,
thus emulating in a learning
ONE OF the city’s biggest
Tait Communications approached
the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community
median outside the entrance to
its Wooldridge Rd business.
The company, which employs
more than 400 people at the
concerns last month over the
low visibility at its entrance.
The recent upgrade to Russley
Wairakei Rd onto Russley Rd,
which has resulted in more traffic
using Wooldridge Rd.
There have been two reported
crashes along the section of
Wooldridge Rd in the last five
years and four within the last
eight years.
All the recorded crashes were
located at driveways and three
of those were directly outside
the Tait Communications site.
spokesperson said the company
the community board’s decision
to allow no-stopping lines and a
“As the road has become more
made this a major safety risk for
the spokesperson said.
“The council and community
board members have been very
responsive to this and the
proposed changes will resolve
all of the concerns we have had.”
The decision to approve the
proposal was delayed after the
community board requested
city council staff look into other
options that would save onstreet
However, community
board chairman Sam
could not be saved.
But he was happy with the
outcome.
Women only
time slots at
swimming pools
• By Julia Evans
FOR TWO hours on Sunday
it was only women who were
allowed to swim in the teaching
pool at Pioneer.
City council head of recreation,
sports and events Nigel Cox said
20 females and a pre-school age
boy attended the first session over
the weekend.
“Ranging in age from preschool
to seniors,” he said.
Mr Cox said the women-only
sessions will be held at Aquagym
and Wharenui pools, as well as
Pioneer Recreation and Sports
Centre, in conjunction with
Christchurch Resettlement Services.
“The pool is booked for this
session to run every Sunday from
1.30–3.30pm,” he said.
The idea was suggested by the
city council’s multicultural subcommittee
in June, which asked
staff to look into the potential of
offering women-only swimming
sessions at particular times.
The session sets out to cater to
women of other cultures, particularly
Muslim women who generally
aren’t able to swim in public.
But also other women who do
not feel comfortable swimming
with men.
BISHOPDALE VILLAGE Mall is
set to be rejuvenated for the first
Last week the Fendalton-
The money
will be spent
on beautifying
the area and
developing
Suggestions for the project
pong, and new signage.
Bishopdale Businesses
Association chairwoman
Amanda Nuttall said she was
glad funding for the upgrade had
been approved.
“Bishopdale Village was
started in the 1960s and has had
no significant upgrade in that
time,” she said.
“A start has been made with
the library and community
centre but it would be great to see
more of the village upgraded.”
She said the only challenge left
would be finding projects that
all businesses in the area were on
board with.
“One of the challenges
here is that the buildings
are individually-owned and
ensuring all landlords commit to
the upgrade is not easy.”
She hopes the upgrade
will draw more people to the
Bishopdale area.
“The population in this area
is growing and this is an easilyaccessible
and convenient hub of
the community.”
Stroke victim a step closer
to getting his tricycle
• By Anan Zaki
STROKE VICTIM Grant
Cowan is edging closer to
getting back cycling.
Friends of the former police
officer and triathlete rallied
around the him after he suffered
two strokes 18 months
ago.
They set up a Go Fund Me
page to buy a recumbent tricycle
for the 52-year-old former
Papanui resident.
Donations from 149 people
reached $12,300 last Friday.
They need $16,500 to buy the
trike, which is able to be ridden
while sitting down.
Mr Cowan lost the ability to
speak, and lost feeling in his
right arm and right leg after
the stroke. He now lives at St
John of God care facility in
Halswell.
Mr Cowan’s friend of 30
years Rodger Wyatt told
Western News in October
that when he tried the trike
at the Bike Expo, they saw
an expression unseen for 18
months.
“The look on his face, he was
just absolutely humming.”
Mr Cowan’s friends also
ALL SMILES: Grant Cowan on a tricycle with Trikes NZ owner Brian Gilbert. It was this
moment that sparked Mr Cowan’s friends into action to raise $16,500 to buy the trike.
took part in the Blue Dog sixhour
blast at McLeans Island
in October to raise awareness
for their cause. They won the
race.
Mr Cowan’s best friend
Derrick Murray said they
also want to raise awareness
about strokes among 40-50
year-olds.
The Stroke Foundation of
New Zealand recommends
learning three observations
to look for when identifying
stroke victims.
If the person’s face is drooping
on one side, if one arm
is weak or if their speech is
slurred, phone 111.
It’s abbreviated as FAST.
Face, Arm, Speech and Take
action.
City chorus puts
on festive show
• By Ashleigh Monk
THE Christchurch City Chorus
is putting on a festive show to
get everyone into the Christmas
spirit.
On December 15 the choir
will take the stage to perform
The Magic of Christmas.
Musical director Virginia
Humphrey-Taylor said the show
would include Christmas carols,
skits, poems and dancing.
“We want to share the joy
and music of Christmas with
people,” she said.
“We want everyone to come
and sing carols with us. It’s
something for the whole family
to get everyone excited for
Christmas.”
She said about 80 members of
the choir would be performing.
“We’ve got quartets singing,
we’ve got small groups singing,
we’ve got about 20 children who
will be performing,” she said.
“We’ll sing a lot of the classic
Christmas carols, but there will
also be a few songs that people
won’t know; songs from around
the world about Christmas.”
The show would give members
a chance to get some practice
in before the Christchurch City
Chorus heads to New Orleans
for a performance in September.
“We’re doing as many shows
as we can so we are prepared,”
she said.
She said she hoped to showcase
the group and encourage
new members to join.
“We’re looking for new
members all the time. There’s
always a turn over of membership
because people move away
or their lives change, so this is a
chance for people who might be
interested in joining to see what
we do.”
The Magic of Christmas will
be performed on December 15,
with a matinee at 2pm and an
evening show at 7pm.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $20
for seniors and $10 for children,
and can be purchased at www.
ccchorus.co.nz or by calling
Jeannette McGrath on 021 976
Theatre for babies
BABIES AND theatre are not
usually two things that are put
together.
In fact, any parent who has
taken a baby to a performance
knows it can be challenging at
best and a disaster at worst.
Turning that whole idea on its
head is Strowan’s Amy Straker,
Burwood’s Melanie Luckman
and Sumner’s Hannah Wheeler
and.
The trio will perform their
show Up And Away, designed
especially for pre-walking
babies, in New Brighton and
Phillipstown.
The show will be staged
through the newly-launched
Cubbin Theatre Company.
The company aims to develop
genuine theatre for children
under the age of five.
Each performance will last
about 30-40min with an opportunity
for families to stay and
play at the end.
The show will also take place
in a carefully crafted tent.
“Our vision is of a world where
high-quality art is as integral to
early childhood as the
playground, and as accessible,”
Luckman said.
She said it has been great
working with the city council’s
enliven places project fund for
MAGICAL: Hannah Wheeler and Amy Straker performing their
show Up and Away, which is designed especially for
pre-walking babies.
this tour.
Luckman said with the funding’s
help it can offer the show
for $5 for a baby and adult
together.
The show is informed by
neuroscientific research and has
been developed in consultation
with a speech and a language
therapist through a series of
rehearsal workshops with babies.
Wheeler was working at LATT
Children’s Theatre and living in
South Korea when she saw her
first baby theatre performance.
“It was five years ago and what
I experienced has stuck with me
ever since. I am really excited
about bringing high quality,
respectful and intelligent theatre
to children in Christchurch,” she
said.
•Up and Away is on
Thursday and Friday at
the Phillipstown Hub, 39
Nursery Rd. Bookings can
be made at eventbrite.co.nz.
Bellbird snaps top photo prize
Fire rages, homes at risk
A “RARE and magical moment”
caught on camera saw a Hornby
teen win a photography award.
Zoe Evans, 15, won the 11 to
15 category for a close-up shot of
a Bellbird inside Auckland Zoo’s
aviary.
“When the Bellbird finally
realised I was there, it looked
straight at me with its beautiful
brown eyes and I took my final
shot. It was truly a rare and
magical moment,” she said.
Anna Babington’s heartbreaking
shot of a injured seal
by a boat propeller was second
place.
Max Eadie-Lilley won the
under-10 category with his
moody monochrome shot of a
school of fish in a Lake Taupo
dam.
SNAP: Hornby resident Zoe
Evans’ photo (top left) won the
11 to 15-year-old category in
Canterbury Museum’s youth
photography competition.
He took the photo, which he
titled Stuck, during a weekend
away with his family.
Dylan Fisher, 10, was runnerup
for his portrait of a Kea,
which judges said captured the
bird’s intelligence and famously
cheeky nature.
The competition titled
Amazing Animals attracted
more than 200 entries from
photographers aged 15 and under
throughout Canterbury.
The judges convened last week
to choose a winner and runnerup
from the two categories.
Canterbury Museum curator
natural history Cor Vink, who
was one of the competition’s
three judges, said the panel was
blown away by the quality of the
entries.
“We were just amazed by
the talent these young people
had. We recently hosted the
Natural History Museum’s
Wildlife Photographer of the Year
exhibition, and I honestly think
some of these shots would not
have looked out of place on the
walls of that exhibition.”
The winners won Prezzie Card
prizes and their photographs are
on display now in the museum’s
foyer.
Oaklands School Eco-Warriors
The Eco-Warriors are a group of
nine students who meet each
week to explore real life problems
in our community. We began in
Term 2 this year and have followed
a six step problem solving model
to reduce the amount of rubbish,
particularly plastic packaging, in
our school and community.
We submitted our project to
the Future Problem Solving
competition and were delighted
to find out at the end of Term
3 that we had qualified for the
National competition in the
junior division of the Community
Problem Solving area. Five
members of our group travelled
to Auckland over the weekend of
2 - 4 November to compete in the
National competition at Carey Park
in Henderson. We had to create a
display, have an interview about
our project and present to about
200 people on Saturday night. We
also submitted a scrapbook and
written report outlining all the work
the team had done over the three
terms.
We were so excited to be awarded
first place in our division.
Community problem solving
helps us to be better thinkers,
collaborators and communicators.
We look forward to continuing with
our project next year and our hope
for the future is to have a rubbish
free school and plastic free lunch
boxes.
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a decoration or two around the home.
Whether its outdoor lights with a waving Santa or
just draping tinsel across your mantelpiece, there are
many ways to celebrate the festive season in your home.
Go natural
Driftwood painted white with LED lights wrapped
around, or pine cones with a touch of silver spray
paint, make beautiful natural additions to the home
at this time of year. If you have a tree branch around
the home, why not cut it up into discs and spray paint
white stars and reindeer on the disc. Drill a hole in the
top and thread some gardeners string through the hole
and you have an instant decoration to hang on the tree
or somewhere around the home. Cover polystyrene
balls in ripped linen, hessian and cotton strips. These
can either be hung up or a number placed in a bowl on
the table.
Tinsel town
Many love the glitter and sparkle that tinsel brings
but how about using it in different ways. A threetiered
cake plate with tinsel laid on each plate with
baubles then placed on top, can look really impressive
as a centrepiece for the table. Make your own wreath
by wrapping tinsel around and around a polystyrene
circle. Hang just as it is, or hot glue gun baubles on to
create extra wow.
Table setting
Sometimes the simplest decorations on the table
can look the most stunning. A beautiful napkin rolled
up with a piece of red and white ribbon, or rosemary
wreath looks amazing. Why not place a hessian runner
down the middle of the table and add greenery and
candles in jars on top to create a wonderful centrepiece.
If you have a children’s eating table, why not put a
long piece of brown paper as a table cloth. Draw large
circles where the plates can go and write Christmas
questions beside each plate outline. A little bottle with
a red and white paper straw is great too. Put a jar of
red and green crayons on the table. When the kids are
finished their dinner, they can play noughts and crosses
or hangman or just draw pictures.
If you’re looking for ideas why not check out
Pintrest. Here you will find every style and every
technique to make sure your home looks like a
Christmas wonderland this festive season.
Bringing movie magic to Ballantynes
• By Georgia O’Connor-
Harding
A PROP maker who has worked
on some of the biggest movies
to be filmed in New Zealand has
helped bring Ballantynes’ iconic
Christmas windows to life this
year.
Simon Hames has led a high
flying career working on the sets
of King Kong and The Lord of the
Rings.
In 1999 he won the Supreme
WOW Award for making wearable
chairs for the World of
Wearable Art festival.
After starting work as a visual
merchandise team member this
year, Mr Hames was tasked with
building the Christmas window.
With the talent of Mr Hames
on board, it was the reason Ballantynes
decided to create the
windows in-house this year as
opposed to outsourcing.
Visual merchandise manager
Danielle Casey, who led the charge
for this year’s theme, also has a
distinguished background in design,
having created windows for
department stores Harrods and
Selfridges in the United Kingdom.
Pearl Schwalger-Smith, who
has worked in a range of roles at
Ballantynes in the past 10 years
CHRISTMAS CHEER: The Ballantynes visual merchandise team Pearl Schwalger-Smith, Danielle
Casey and Simon Hames have helped make Christmas more magical for children.
has also been heavily involved in
designing the project.
It is the first time in about 20
years the windows have been
designed in-house.
Miss Casey said the project
has been a “labour of love” with
her team working on it since
April.
She said the theme of mice was
inspired by popular children’s
films featuring mice including
The Borrowers, Mouse Hunt and
Stuart Little.
Ballantynes has made
Christmas extra special for kids
in more ways than one this
year, creating a limited edition
children’s book to match the
window’s theme.
The book called The Merry
Mice of Dunstable House was
donated to every primary school
in the city and Timaru.
The setting for the Christmas
window and book is at Dunstable
House, the original building
where Ballantynes was established
in 1854.
It tells the tale of a little family
of mischievous mice living with
humans at Christmas time.
Ballantynes has also spread
the Christmas cheer by making
its own teddy bears named
Dunstable.
With every teddy bear sold
throughout December, one is
donated to the children’s ward at
Christchurch Hospital.
Marketing manager Anna
Powell said Ballantynes wanted
to do a couple of little things for
the community as a way of giving
back at Christmas time.
The Merry Mice of Dunstable
House is on sale for $19 until the
end of December.

Halswell teen’s path
to ambulance career
ST JOHN’S national cadet
of the year is 17-year-old
Dominic Anisy, who hopes
to ultimately pursue a
career with the ambulance
service.
Dominic has been a
youth member since 2006,
starting as a penguin at
the Opawa division before
moving to Halswell, where
he is currently a cadet
leader.
He graduated from St
Thomas of Canterbury
College this year.
Dominic was also the
South Island region cadet
of the year and competed
for the national title alongside
Virginia Konelio and
Jeremy Johnston.
Dominic formally took
over the role as national
cadet of the year from Cascade
Price at an investiture
ceremony earlier this
month at the Christchurch
Transitional Cathedral.
Outside St John, Dominic
is a talented graphic
designer having won a
national graphic design
competition to design the
logo of the new St John
intranet.
Dominic also hopes to
Steven Evans.
pursue a career with St
John’s frontline ambulance
service or the police force
in future.
“I am really looking
forward to my term as
national cadet of the year.
I am so passionate about St
John youth and I am grateful
for all the fun memories,
life skills and friends
that I have made along the
way,” said Dominic.
St John community
health services director
Sarah Manley said Dominic
will “play a big part in
leading the St John youth
programme’s 15-year
strategy, launched last year
in St John youth’s 90th
year.”
St John youth has about
7500 members, with 193
divisions across New
Zealand.
As part of his cadet
duties, Dominic will lead
the St John youth advisory
panel, supported by Virginia
Konelio and Jeremy
Being an inner city Pre-School also gives
you a wonderfully easy opportunity to engage
in your child’s learning if you are working in
the CBD.
Your child will develop essential
Some of the large plastic
Children eat
At Kimihia we are very lucky to have
space for vege gardens. Our tamariki are
involved in all aspects of the growing
of vegetables and fruit. Whilst our
strawberries are usually picked and
eaten fresh, most of the vegetables we
grow are used in the meals our Centre
provides. Over the growing season our
garden produced pumpkins, zucchini,
beetroot, tomatoes, beans, basil,
coriander, silverbeet, peas, broccoli,
cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce. Giant
sunflowers, nasturtiums and calendulas
provided plenty of colour in the garden.
Our children delighted in being able to
harvest the vegetables thay had grown
and take them to our food preparers. We
have also saved seeds from some of last
year’s veges to plant in the new season’s
garden.
The garden offers so many
opportunities for learning; not only the
connection between garden and plate,
but also how to care for living things,
how to work together and how to live
sustainably and care for the earth.
The tree of LIFE
New research on Gingko
Biloba excites researchers!
For decades scientists believed brain
damage with age, after a stroke or injury
was irreversible and brain neurons could
not be repaired. In more recent times,
new research has shown that neurons
can grow back with the right conditions
and that a special extract of Gingko
Biloba (EGb-761 or TEBONIN) has
been clinically found to assist in this.
The implications for stroke recovery are
obvious, but researchers also know many
of us suffer from undetected “microstrokes”
that over a period of time slowly
reduce our cognitive function. TEBONIN
is prescribed worldwide as a natural
supportive agent for a healthy brain and
cognitive function. It supports healthy
mental performance, concentration, focus,
alertness, motor function and to help
with many conditions including tinnitus
(ringing and noise in the ears), vertigo
and normal balance. TEBONIN improves
micro-circulation and helps the blood
flow reach those critical places it needs to
get. It is a potent anti-oxidant and makes
the red blood cells more pliable and
capillary walls more flexible.
TEBONIN is one of the most widely
studied and researched herbal products in
the world and is the only Ginkgo biloba
extract manufactured via a patented
multi-step extraction process. Each small
tablet contains a highly concentrated
BOOST BRAIN
PERFORMANCE UP TO 30%
TEBONIN is the No 1 Ginkgo Biloba extract in the World with more than 8 million tablets
being consumed every day. It is also the most researched herbal extract with more than 60
controlled clinical studies & over 400 scientific studies. It has been shown to have excellent
efficacy, safety & tolerability. Millions of consumers have trusted TEBONIN for over 30
years to support blood flow, capillary health, brain health & performance.
Studies on TEBONIN Show:
- Improved Brain Performance & Function up to 30%. This includes improvement
in mental sharpness, focus, attention, concentration, understanding, memory & recall.
- Reduces errors made & mental stress.
- The only Ginkgo shown to increase activity in all areas of the brain. Can help restore
brain function after a brain injury such as from a stroke.
- Helps relieve tinnitus (ringing & noise in the ears), vertigo, dizziness & supports normal
balance.
- Improves blood flow to all areas of the body.
- Reduces plaque formation in the blood vessels.
- Protective effect against eyes damage caused by light.
50:1 extract to give you a therapeutic
clinical dose without having to take a large
amount of the herb. Of 25 Gingko biloba
products on the market, and tested by a
major medical journal, only TEBONIN
passed all five of the test requirements.
Ten brands didn’t meet any requirements
and the rest didn’t pass more than three
out of five requirements. TEBONIN is
the only Gingko biloba extract shown
to activated all areas of the brain and is
considered the gold standard in Gingko.
TEBONIN has been trusted by millions
of consumers worldwide for over 30
years with more than 8,000,000 tablets
consumed each day.
TEBONIN and further information
is available from the Natural Health
HEALTH & AWARENESS
Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
WESTERN NEWS
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham
sees clients with a range of symptoms but
many of their middle-aged and senior
clients visit complaining of pain in one or
both hips.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a
back muscle could also be the cause, as
shown in the image.
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
Hip muscle that causes hip pain
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
and wellbeing.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the hip, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
balance. They teach a movement sequence
that stretches the hip in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated than
surgery. In very few treatments the client
Back hip muscle that causes hip pain
will know if it is going to work for them or
not, without financial commitment.
EPOXY
EPOXY grout is a large part of the answer in making sure showers last
the distance. EPOXY grout is 90% non porous. With all the chemicals,
soap residue, mineral deposits and dirt that end up on the shower
base, it really does need EPOXY grout if you want it to last 10+ years.
Replacing cracked tiles, resiliconing shower edges, removing calcium
buildup on shower tiles, regrouting cracked grout and all tile related
issues are part of the Groutpro service.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
Action looms
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
Apartments’
sign-off
this week
• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 million, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
A WOOLSTON butcher proved
New World Fe ry Rd butcher
Jeremy Garth and his team, the
came second a the World
It was the firs time Mr Garth
“We produced some top quality
products and came away
with a g od result so we’re very
The preparation for this year’s
World Butchers’ Cha lenge was
Mr Garth, who has b en a
butcher for 14 years, said the
competition brought back his
pa sion for the job.
“Doing a l thi stuff and
m eting new people, s eing new
ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes t own a
butcher shop of his own someday
but says for now he wi l focus
on ge ting mor experience
and on the 2020 cha lenge.
“In two years’ time, we’ l be
going back to try and win the
title,” he said.
In the past year, the district
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Aussie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
