NOVEMBER 2018
A Letter from the Rector
Dear Friends,
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
On the 11th November 2018, we will be joined by the Royal British Legion, Bishop David and
people from across the town of Market Rasen for our annual service of Remembrance. It is 100
years since the Armistice was signed, since the guns fell silent. To mark this a poppy tribute
made up of hundreds of knitted poppies has been hung on the side of the tower, flowing around
to the Church porch.
I would like to express my grateful thanks to all who have knitted poppies, helped to attach
them to the camouflage nets and those who have organised the tribute. It has been really good
to see so many people, both within the Church and from across our town, surrounding villages
and in some cases across the world, work together to help create this wonderful tribute as we
mark the 100 year anniversary of the Armistice.
Remembrance Sunday draws human beings together in a way that is unique. Young and old
gather to remember and reflect, each allowing some aspect of the reality of war to touch their
lives. Some who gather will bring new or not so new memories of active service, a personal
memory. For others they still live with the effects of war today as a result of past experiences.
Some will carry in their heart the memory of a special loved one who made the ultimate
sacrifice.
On Remembrance Sunday, I am moved not only by the sight of the Poppy but by the silence .
Silence that is calm and mutual, a recognition that what matters is so much more than we can
ever say. The silence of Armistice Day – the silence of Remembrance Sunday - it is the
recognition that in order to do justice to what has happened, to do justice to the cost of war, to
say thank you to those involved 100 years ago – we need to be silent together.
In the silence as we reflect, it is empathy that makes us want not only peace and prosperity for
ourselves, but makes us strive for the peace that passes all understanding, for all people that
dwell on earth.
Peace must be what we all strive for. It is what the Old Testament prophet Micah foresaw, and
what Jesus taught us. The work of peace and reconciliation needs to be the subject of prayer.
Our Christian faith, our common human morality impels us to work for it with all our might. It
must come from our remembrance of those who have given their lives in war; those injured in
conflict and for their families and loved ones.
It is through our prayers and our voice that peace will emerge. It will not come if we forget; it
won’t happen if we wait for others to work for it.
So as we gather on the 11th November 2018, at 11am, let us in the silence say “Thank You” to
all who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
God bless
Steve
We will remember them
NOVEMBER 2018
A Letter from the Bishop
‘…they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears
into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more; but they shall all sit under
their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall
make them afraid…’
(Micah 4:3b,4a, NRSV).
These are words which speak of a future hope, a world at peace, a real peace, and not just
the absence of conflict, a sense of wellbeing, of living in harmony with the world we’ve been
given to share, of wanting the best for those we’ve been given to share that world with.
Words I was reminded of recently in conversation with a Russian Second Lieutenant on one
of the ships at Immingham Docks, as he spoke in broken English of what he saw as the
natural desire of all peoples to live like that – and his frustration at what he saw as the leaders
of the nations, his own included, in failing to be able to achieve that.
And they are good words as we remember this month the ending of the Great War, the world’s
first example of what became known as ‘total war’. ‘It’ll all be over by Christmas’ the British
Army were told – 1,568 days later, 888,246 British lives were lost. Nine to 15 million lives lost
in total. Sixty-five million men from 30 countries involved. The ‘war to end all wars’ was what
was hoped for then.
As Christians we know that ultimately the challenge of peace is not one of political solutions,
important as they may be, but one of dealing with the human heart.
That is actually what the passage in Micah looks forward to. A time when all men and women
look to the ‘mountain of the Lord, the house of the God of Jacob’ and have their hearts and
minds transformed by him, which then brings in that universal peace, which we all long to live
in.
That’s the ultimate vision, the ultimate hope – but until then, being peacekeepers,
peacemakers in the different places we find ourselves in is something each of us is called to
do, and something our world still desperately needs.
With every blessing,
Bishop David
SINGING for HEALTH
The Children’s Society.
NOVEMBER 2018
Did you know that singing is good for your health? Singing releases
endorphins in the brain that make us all feel better about ourselves and
exercises that help us to stand and sing properly loosen up our joints. Vocal
and breathing techniques can help us breathe better and getting out to meet
others and have a laugh while learning something together is an added
bonus.
An 8 week course begins in mid-January 2019 here at St Thomas’ in Market
Rasen. The sessions will take place on Friday afternoons. The cost will be
£12 per person for the whole course (£1.50 per session) which is payable in
full at the start; every penny will be donated to St Thomas’.
If you are NOT a strong or confident singer and can’t read music – this may
well be for you. You just have to want to give it a go, be able to get yourself
to the venue and attend regularly as the activities build up week on week.
The exercises are not difficult, and most of the music is reasonably well
known and easy to sing for most. What happens afterwards is entirely up to
you.
To know more and/or register interest, ring Jackie on 01507 313141 by 30
December 2018.
Go on! What have you got to lose?
Many thanks to those who have ordered Children’s Society Christmas Cards. The cards
already ordered will be delivered in the middle of November but It is not too late to place
an order; the cards will be on display after the 10am service this month on the 4 th and
18 th . If you wish to make other arrangements to view the cards please contact me on
842257.
If you are a Society House Box Holder please hand in your Box to me or to Jenny by
Sunday 25 th November.
The annual Christingle Service will take place at St Thomas’ on Advent Sunday, 2 nd
December at 3pm. The pupils of the Primary School will, as usual, be participating in the
Service which is always a joyful and exciting start to the Advent season leading to
Christmas. We will also be joined by families from Mini Messy Church, Messy Church and
Children’s Church. Hope to see you there!
St. Thomas’
A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed in any
way towards our impressive and poignant poppy displays.
These photos show just a small piece of the work that has
been going on in the church rooms since June. Donations
of poppies have come from near and far - over 4000 in
total! People have knitted, crocheted, sewn and otherwise
created beautiful poppies. Others have kindly donated
wool, buttons, wires,
hundreds of cable ties,
netting and ropes. Some
have carefully attached
the poppies or strung
them around the pillars in
church and we have kindly
been loaned camouflage netting.
Many people have tirelessly given their time and the
result of all this generosity is a striking and moving
piece of artwork (both inside and outside our church)
which honours the sacrifices made in war and marks
the 100 th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918.
In our tribute, you will find some blue ‘cornflowers’:
these are in remembrance of French soldiers who also
gave their lives for our freedom. You will also find
some purple poppies: these are to recognise the fallen
animals that also served our country.
Celebrating Harvest at Messy Church.
NOVEMBER 2018
It was brilliant to welcome some new families to Messy Church in October as we met to
celebrate Harvest. We all had great fun exploring the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 by
trying to stamp, print, paint or glue 5000 people onto our huge paper and making our own
edible picnic baskets of 5 loaves and 2 fish. We also made bread dough to take home and
bake and jelly gardens to have for our pudding. We learnt where lots of the foods we eat
every day are produced and packed as well as trying our hand at a spot of fishing!
If you came into church in the two weeks following our celebration you may have seen our
special thanksgiving bunting which celebrated our favourite foods, too.
Later we sang the Harvest Samba, prayed with bread dough and, due to a technical hitch,
invented our own special version of ‘He’s got the whole world in his hands’ – including
dinosaurs and elephants!
As usual, the fun was all topped off with a lovely meal together. We’re really looking
forward to the next one on Sunday 11 th November when we will be thinking about
Remembering – hope to see you there!
Rev. Claire Walker
Historical article -
First published in St. Thomas’ Parish News February 1962
A Warmer Church
I hope that you have noticed that the church has been warmer since
Christmas. This is because the P.C.C. decided to keep the heating system
working all through the week for the time being. A building as big as the church
does not get properly warmed if it is only heated at week-ends. The difference is
certainly noticeable. I was told during some cold weather in January that the
church was the warmest place in town, and no one has spoken like that before.
As people discover that the church is no longer a cold place from Monday until
Saturday, they may also be encouraged to make more use of it during the week.
I hope so, anyway.
Of course, it means that we are using much more coke, and coke is very
expensive. We shall have to review the situation when we know quite what the
extra cost has been.
“A Service of Light”
remembering our departed loved-ones
On the Sunday 4th November at 3pm.at St Thomas’ Church, we will be holding our
“Service of Light” for our faithful departed. This is a service that has grown in value not
only for our church members but for the many families that we have helped during the
difficult days of the death of a loved-one and during the bereavement that follows.
It is a peaceful, quiet and prayerful service in which we give thanks to God for the lives of
our departed loved-ones and have time to reflect on our past and future. There is an
opportunity to join with other members of the congregation in lighting a candle in memory
of your loved-ones and as we do this their names are read aloud.
You are warmly invited to stay for refreshments after the service.
‘Come and Sing’ event at St James Church, Louth
The Louth Choral Society is hosting a “Come and Sing” day at St James Church,
Louth on Saturday 17 November.
In three rehearsal sessions, the choir’s Musical Director, Allan Smith, will lead the
singers through a selection of favourite choruses composed by Bach and Handel.
The atmosphere will be very relaxed and participants will have the opportunity to
sit with members of the choir and other experienced singers. A basic ability to read
music will be an advantage but is not essential.
Registration commences at 10am and the concert will commence at 4pm. The cost
of taking part is £10 (Under 25 free). Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
The fee includes the loan of the vocal score containing all the music to be
rehearsed and performed.
The day will end with a concert performance, which will be free of charge to
anyone. Audience members will be invited to donate whatever they think the
performance was worth at the end!
If you wish to take part in this event, please telephone 01472 840234 or email
louthchoralsociety@btopenworld.com
Further details will be on www.louthchoral.co.uk. If you would like to come to the
concert, just come along!
Louth Choral Society’s next regular concert will be "Sing Nöel" on Saturday 22
December; further information to follow.
