SELWYN RESIDENTS are
more positive about their quality
of life than people living in
Christchurch and Waimakariri,
according to the latest Wellbeing
Survey.
But they are the least satisfied
with their ease of access to the
natural environment.
The Canterbury District
Health Board released its survey
from May, done every six
months, to measure earthquake
recovery across the region.
It found 90 per cent of people
living in the district rated
their quality of life positively,
compared with 82 per cent in
Waimakariri District and 79 per
cent in Christchurch.
“Selwyn District residents
generally have more positive
findings in key well-being indicators,”
the survey said.
Rolleston youth worker
Courtney Forrest, who has lived
in Selwyn for almost six years,
says he would rate his quality of
life positively also.
He believes the district
provides lots of “amazing” opportunities.
“People feel a bit more freedom
to make their mark . . . whether
that be sport, recreation, I think
there’s something out here for
HAPPY: Rolleston youth worker Courtney Forrest, pictured with Rolleston School pupils, enjoys
living in the district. This follows a Canterbury District Health Board survey which found 90 per
cent of Selwyn residents rate their quality of life positively.
everybody,” he said.
Mr Forrest said the “majority”
of the people he interacts with
are also positive about their
quality of life in Selwyn.
“You always get the odd one
that doesn’t like the growth and
the busyness of it but I think that
statistic is really true,” he said.
Mayor Sam Broughton said
the district council is “very
happy” to see residents enjoy a
high quality of life.
“We have worked hard in our
communities to deliver facilities
and events that encourage
chairwoman Evon Currie is
wanting “local decision makers”
to explore the data and use it
to positively influence the wellbeing
of its population.
Mayor Broughton said its
operational team will be looking
at the survey results and working
on ways to continue to enhance
the lives of residents.
Seventy-eight per cent of
Selwyn residents are satisfied
with their ease of access to the
natural environment. This falls
behind Waimakariri on 87 per
cent and Christchurch at 80 per
cent.
When it came to emotional
well-being, on average Selwyn
residents rated themselves “significantly
higher” than Christchurch
City and Waimakariri
residents.
The survey also found Selwyn
residents are the most satisfied,
90 per cent, with the overall
quality of their houses in terms
of warmth, insulation, heating,
moisture levels and weather
tightness, when compared with
Waimakariri, 85 per cent, and
Christchurch 77 per cent.
Just under 70 per cent of
Selwyn residents said they were
satisfied with the ease of access
to suitable transport to daily
activities. This is lower than
the 74 per cent of Christchurch
residents who said they were
satisfied, but higher than
Waimakariri on 64 per cent.
