Three or four Tasman lows passed over the South Island one after the other, which created a constant easterly flow with wet, humid weather seemingly neverending. Surf-wise the easterly wind created plenty of surf with ridable waves most days, but the on-shore wind meant mainly messy, lumpy conditions. Looking ahead, a highpressure system has moved in over this week so hopefully, things brighten up for a bit. On the contest scene, the local groms have been out and about at various contests. The South Island primary school champs were held at North Beach over the weekend in big, stormy conditions. Jack Tyro won the year 7/8 boys and Eva Henderson won the year 7/8 girls. Amelie Wink was third in the year 7/8 girls. In the year 6s, Travis Henderson was third in the boys, while Ameli Campbell was second and Tessa Langman was fourth in the girls. Lucy Temoananui has been in China competing at the ISA world SUP champs on Hainan Island, China’s equivalent of Hawaii. The event was held in nice, clean, head-high waves on a sand-bottomed, left-hand point break. This was Lucy’s second year representing New Zealand at the ISA world champs. Estella Hungerford was part of the New Zealand junior surf team which competed at the ISA world junior champs at Huntington Beach, California, at the start of last month. Estella progressed through several heats before coming unstuck in the repechage round three, finishing the event in 43rd overall. New Zealand has secured two spots for next year on the highest tier of competitive surfing, the world championship tour. Paige Hareb (Taranaki) re-qualified recently with a win at the White Buffalo Hyuga Pro in Japan. Ricardo Christie (Gisborne) re-qualified over the weekend gaining enough points at the Vans World Cup at Sunset Beach, Hawaii. It’s going to be great to see two Kiwis on the world stage next year. Sumner fail to make one-day cricket finals • By Louis Day SUMNER HAVE failed to make it into the finals of the one day competition for the first time in four years after losing to Burnside on Saturday. Sumner travelled to Burnside Park missing two top order batsmen. The loss was their fourth consecutive defeat. After losing the toss, Sumner batted first in wet conditions. They lost regular wickets and were all out for a disappointing 81. In reply, Burnside went on the attack and, in spite of losing four wickets, made short work of the total. Dean Smith continued his good form with three wickets, but 81 was not enough to defend, said Sumner club captain Dan Vann He said his side could not contain their disappointment after not reaching the finals. “We were unfortunate to again lose the toss in bowler-friendly conditions for the third week in a row but we still underperformed.” Mr Vann said his side desperately missed their skipper Johnny Beveridge, who is currently playing for the New Zealand Police cricket team in Australia. Sumner now turn their attention to the two-day competition, in which they are currently at the top of the table.
