stood out to
judges of the 2018 Literary
Classics Book Award competition,
earning the Words
on Wings young adult fiction
award.
On Nov. 1, Literary Classics
unveiled its list of 82
finalists. Only four went
on to earn top honors, with
“Mourning Dove” being
among the select few.
“The success of ‘Mourning
Dove’ verifies everything
it takes to write a novel,”
Fullerton wrote in an
email to the Surfside News.
“All the time and effort and
intention of crafting a story
in such a way as to speak to
the reader is ultimately the
author’s aim.”
The tale shares the journey
of Millie and her brother,
Finley, who move from
Minnesota to their mother’s
native Memphis after their
parents go through a divorce.
Literary Classics described
the novel as a
“coming-of-age tale of
siblings growing up in the
south during the 1970s.”
“Fullerton paints a poignant
picture of life in a
world in which one simply
must know ‘how to do,’”
Literary Classics wrote in
