malibusurfsidenews.com life & arts Malibu surfside news | December 6, 2018 | 27 Journey comes full circle for Malibu man Gobble Gobble Give provides Thanksgiving dinner to LA homeless Barbara Burke, Freelance Reporter The roots of Malibuite Barry Walker’s Gobble Gobble Give are close to his heart. “I started Gobble Gobble Give 21 years ago when I was on the verge of being homeless myself,” Walker said. Each year, the charity feeds Thanksgiving dinner to homeless people on Thanksgiving Day in Los Angeles and many cities across the country. Walker’s motivation for starting the nonprofit derives from his thankfulness that he was able to emerge from the paralyzing abyss of addiction. “I was squatting in an abandoned apartment in Silverlake, California, and I was at a turning point in my life,” Walker said. “I had just gotten sober after a long and hard fight with substance abuse.” He was down, but not out. Lost, but not beyond helping someone find a little sustenance. “So, I decided to scrape some change together and make a few meals for a homeless family that lived outside my window,” he said. “I needed to help someone else. That was the turning point for me.” As the years passed, Walker said he found his strength in sobriety. He opened a small secondhand store in Silverlake. That venture went well. Within three years, he owned three antique stores. That venture also went well. “I eventually opened a chain of day spas,” he said. “Then, I got into real estate.” In other words, he emerged from the nightmare of addiction to live the American dream. “Today, I’m 21 years sober and have the most beautiful wife and children that make me tear up I love them so much,” Walker said. “I live in Malibu and am in the final stages of opening a vegan, private island resort in Fiji.” Along the way, Walker says, his “little feed-the-homeless idea has grown as well.” Last year, Gobble Gobble Gives deployed more than 7,000 volunteers in 18 cities across the country. “We fed, clothed and handed out hygiene supplies to more than 27,500 men, women and children who live on the streets,” Walker said. Producer and actor Jeffrey Patterson is one of the many volunteers who helps with the efforts each Thanksgiving. Patterson chatted with Malibu Surfside News about Walker and the charity. “Barry has a heart of gold and he really cares about his fellow man,” Patterson said. “He’s a super-nice guy who will help anyone that he can.” Every Thanksgiving morning, volunteers from Malibu and beyond head out to feed the homeless. “It’s grown bigger than just providing meals,” Patterson said. “We also provide hygiene amenities to the homeless — shampoo, deodorant and feminine hygiene products. Those essentials mean the world to homeless people.” For Walker, it’s all about giving back — and, literally, about being grateful to be alive. “I am blessed beyond any measure of the word,” Walker said. “ ... I truly reflect on my journey and my gratitude at being on this planet.” For more information, or to donate, visit www.gobblegobble give.org.
