malibusurfsidenews.com news Malibu surfside news | December 6, 2018 | 7 Police Reports Laptop, handbag among items reportedly nabbed from locked vehicle A $2,500 MacBook Pro, a $800 handbag, a wallet and $100 in cash reportedly were stolen from a locked vehicle in the Malibu Colony Plaza parking lot, according to a Nov. 1 report. The alleged victim stated that he noticed that the rear passenger-side window was broken and that the items he left on the back seat were missing. An attempt to locate the laptop was made through a tracker application, but it appeared the tracking device was disabled. Nov. 5 • A $1,000 iPhone, wallet, debit and credit cards, and a dashcam reportedly were stolen from a locked vehicle in the 23000 block of Pacific Coast Highway. The theft allegedly took place Oct. 21. The alleged victim placed his car keys inside the driver’s side wheel wall before he went to the beach to surf. He retrieved the key when he returned, but found the items in his car missing. His stolen debit card reportedly was used at two gas stations in Malibu. Nov. 4 • A purse, wallet, credit cards and a driver’s license reportedly were stolen from a vehicle parked near the Zuma Canyon trailhead. The alleged victim stated she hid her purse in the trunk of her locked vehicle before leaving for a hike on Zuma Canyon. After she returned to her vehicle and drove to a shopping center, she went to retrieve her purse and noticed it missing. Her stolen debit card reportedly was used for three purchases totaling $4,108 at a Best Buy in Thousand Oaks. • Keys, credit cards, a wallet and $60 in cash were among the items reportedly stolen from a locked vehicle in the 23000 block of Pacific Coast Highway. When the alleged victim returned from surfing at the beach, a key he left on top of the front tire was missing, as well as items from inside the car. • Front fog lights valued at $1,500 reportedly were stolen from a 2017 Honda Accord parked between Towers 9 and 10 at Zuma Beach, located at 30000 Pacific Coast Highway. Upon returning from the beach, the alleged victim noticed her front lights missing. She was certain they were intact when she left her home to go to the beach. Nov. 3 • Hennessy cognac glass bottles valued at $1,100 reportedly were stolen from Colony House Liquors, 22523 Pacific Coast Highway. A police deputy responding to a burglary alarm at the store noted that the front door was pried open, and a crowbar was found on site. Mudslide in Malibu Park prompts evacuation No injuries, no property damage reported Lauren Coughlin, Editor For the second week in a row, local officials warned of potential mudslide conditions last week. At 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, a mudslide in Malibu Park prompted an immediate evacuation of the area, from Busch Drive to Phillip Avenue. The mudslide was reported between Horizon Drive and Busch Drive. No injuries were reported, and no structure damage was incurred, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Information Bureau. Debris cleanup efforts continued into Friday, Nov. 30. Cuthbert Road remained closed up until 8:45 a.m. Friday, though other area streets reopened at 9:30 p.m. the night prior. Webster Elementary School and Pepperdine University closed their campuses because of the weather on Nov. 29, but both reopened the next day. City crews were patrolling the canyon roads and city streets with blade trucks on Friday, according to the City of Malibu. Southern California Edison and communication providers also continued to repair fire-damaged lines. Sheriff McDonnell concedes on heels of updated ballot count Lauren Coughlin, Editor LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell conceded to challenger Alex Villanueva Nov. 26, after the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk provided a ballot update. Villanueva, the first person in 104 years to unseat an incumbent sheriff in LA, was sworn in as the 33rd sheriff Monday, Dec. 3. As of the 26th, Villanueva had earned 52.59 percent (1,277,340 votes) of voters’ support. The final vote tally on Friday, Nov. 30 showed another 33,440 votes (52.85 percent) in Villanueva’s favor. In a Nov. 26 statement, McDonnell thanked the nearly 1.2 million voters who supported him and said an “orderly transition” was in the works. “The honor of serving as the LA County Sheriff is one like no other in law enforcement,” McDonnell wrote. USE LICENSE OPPORTUNITIES FOR RECREATIONAL CAMP PROGRAMS AT L.A. COUNTY BEACHES & MARINA DEL REY The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors is seeking to issue Summer Use Licenses for summer 2019, with an optional two-year extension, to qualified and experienced surf camp, day camp, and physical fitness operators to provide various youth summer camp and recreational programs to Los Angeles County residents on Los Angeles County-owned and operated beaches. These beaches include Manhattan, Venice, Will Rogers, Zuma and Point Dume. Selection of operators will be based on the qualifications of the applicants, with an emphasis on safety standards, professional experience operating similar recreational programs, operating plans, community service, financial capability and remuneration. Applicants must meet the minimum safety requirements as specified by the County. Applicants that do not demonstrate the ability to meet the minimum safety requirements will not be considered.
