College plans farewell<br />

A YOUNG Vinnies Group<br />
from Marian College has helped<br />
spread some Christmas cheer to<br />
the elderly.<br />
Twelve students hosted a<br />
Christmas party for eight<br />
visitors from Age Concern<br />
Canterbury recently.<br />
It aimed to help bring joy to<br />
people who may be alone at<br />
Christmas.<br />
Year 10 student Amy<br />
Williamson said the party went<br />
well and it was nice to see the joy<br />
in people’s faces as they bonded<br />
with each other.<br />
The Young Vinnies Group<br />
was established to support the St<br />
Vincent de Paul Society’s work<br />
to help people in need.<br />
The students have also hosted<br />
morning tea events for elderly<br />
visitors and run campaigns to<br />
collect food cans for the society.<br />
Said year 9 student Anna<br />
McKey: “It was nice knowing<br />
we could organise something<br />
that we knew would be helping<br />
others and contributing to wider<br />
society.”<br />
LINWOOD COLLEGE is<br />
planning a special farewell<br />
celebration to mark the<br />
demolition and replacement<br />
of its school buildings on the<br />
current site.<br />
The celebration is planned for<br />
April 5-6 and will mark the start<br />
of a new chapter in the school’s<br />
history.<br />
The celebration committee is<br />
made up of past students and<br />
teachers from the college.<br />

said it is exciting to have an<br />
opportunity to be part of the<br />
next step in the school’s vibrant<br />
history.<br />
The celebration will start<br />
with a ticketed social gathering<br />
on Friday night and finish<br />
on Saturday with a closing<br />
ceremony.<br />
The school buildings will be<br />
open on the Saturday for people<br />
to look through one last time<br />
and reminisce about the time<br />
they spent at the school. There<br />

In preparation for the event,<br />
the school is asking all past<br />
students, teachers and board<br />
members to pre-register their<br />
interest in attending.<br />
Linwood College will<br />
temporarily shift to the<br />
Avonside Girls’ High School<br />
site while it is rebuilt due to<br />
earthquake damage.<br />
It will occupy the<br />
Avonside Girls’ High site from<br />
the middle of next year until the<br />
rebuild is finished in mid-2021.<br />
