OF ALL THE things I expected
to deal with as a stay-at-homedad,
Vittoria being mean to
another baby was not one of
them.
Maybe that was a foolish assumption,
I don’t know, I’ve only
got the one kid remember.
What are you supposed to do
in that situation? And what is the
other parent supposed to do?
Is there a book on this?
On Tuesday I took Vittoria to a
Plunket playgroup in Papanui on
the advice of a fellow full-time
dad.
It was an enjoyable morning,
the sun was out and there was
plenty of toys and other kids for
Vittoria to play with.
During the course of her rambling
about exploring, she went
inside and sat next to another
wee lass, only a couple of months
younger than her who was playing
with a book.
So, naturally, she steals said
book off the poor kid.
The other baby’s mum was
really good about it, even told her
daughter to share.
However, Vittoria was not satisfied
with just taking her book.
Oh no, she started grabbing
anything this kid was holding,
ignoring my vain pleas for her to
desist or share.

Eventually the other baby got
sick of Vittoria’s shtick and went
to grab her book back.
Vittoria promptly hit her in the
head with it.
I was mortified, I’d never seen
her hit anyone else before (she’s
hit me heaps, but not in anger).
The wee lass started crying
and I profusely apologised to the
mum and told Vittoria off – but I
don’t know if I did enough?
Vittoria’s had bigger kids do
similar to her and I didn’t know
what I should have done then
either. Other people’s kids seem
like a minefield topic.
Either way, I took Vittoria back
outside to where there were older
kids than her so she couldn’t
cause any more grief.
I suppose I’ll get better at this,
I really don’t think I want a bully
for a daughter, regardless of how
dang cute she is.
In a much nicer update, we
took Vittoria to the recent Santa
Parade in the city.
I’m stoked the old floats like
Mother Goose and the Haunted
House are still about. I haven’t
been to a parade in quite a few
years so it was cool to see the
old classics and share them with
Vittoria.
