LYTTELTON PORT COMPANY UPDATE
The Fairway leaves our shores after spending 12 weeks on our Channel Deepening Project.
One of our bigger projects is
the deepening of the navigation
channel, which started in
August when one of the world’s
largest dredges, the Fairway,
arrived in Lyttelton Harbour.
The Fairway was a fixture
in Lyttelton Harbour for 12
weeks, as she worked around
the clock to widen, lengthen
and deepen the navigation
channel. She has dredged more
than five million cubic metres of
mud and silt off the sea floor.
The dredging programme means
larger container ships, which have
virtually doubled in size during
the last 10 years, will now be able
to call at Lyttelton. Prior to the
Channel Deepening Project some
vessels had to wait for high tide
before they could arrive or depart
our Port – now larger vessels can
access the Port at all times.
SUMNER RESIDENTS may
know in February if ratepayers
will help fund the security
cameras they want.
Safer Sumner has approached
the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board for a grant
of $16,000 after the police were
unable to fund the cameras.
The board will make a decision
in February when it works
through the grant requests.
Safer Sumner’s Kath Preston
said in her submission to the
board, it was in desperate need
of support after the cost of the
cameras skyrocketed from $4000
to $20,000.
“The reason why the cost of the
cameras has gone up is because
we have had to align our cameras
with the cameras that the police
use.”
The cameras would be
installed at the entrance to
Sumner on Main Rd, with one
camera monitoring incoming
traffic and one monitoring
outgoing traffic.
pages 6 and 7 today, looking back at the
the Hell Fire Club.
Every port has its rough and tumble
pubs and in Lyttelton it would be fair to say the British has its
conveyor belt of great old stories.
No doubt other pubs in Lyttelton have had theirs, too.
Our headline: ‘Bikies, booze, brawls’ does fairly well sum up
the British. If anyone was looking for a decent scrap, there’d be
plenty of takers there.
As former seaman Jack Mahoney mentioned: “Someone was
saying to me the other day after the world title fight, I’ve seen a
better fight in the British and they’re not wrong.”
Akaroa rock not suitable for drilling
DEEP-BORE injection is
unlikely to be a suitable method
for disposing of Akaroa’s treated
wastewater, test drilling has
shown.
The city council has completed
drilling at two sites on the outskirts
of Akaroa.
Test drilling and site remediation
cost
$550,000. At
this stage,
there are no
plans to do
more drilling.
The first
hole, on Old
Kylie Hills
French Rd,
was drilled
to a depth of
250m.
The second hole, at the site of
the new wastewater treatment
plant at the top of Old Coach Rd,
was drilled to a depth of 150m.
Senior project manager
Kylie Hills said the drilling
showed the rock to be highly
competent (lightly fractured)
basalt and tuff (a mix of rock
and volcanic ash).
“We wanted to know if the
area around Akaroa was suitable
for deep-bore injection,” Mr
Hills said.
“We found some fracturing,
but the fractures across the target
depths were high in mineral
deposits, which had in-filled and
restricted many of the flow paths
through the rock.”
The city council is looking at
options for recycling Akaroa’s
wastewater before its consent
to discharge into the harbour
expires in 2020.
Options include reusing the
treated wastewater to irrigate
trees or pasture in nearby areas,
injection has been ruled out.
or to provide non-drinking
water for garden watering and
toilet flushing in Akaroa.
Deep-bore was also being
investigated.
But Mr Hills said it would take
many more holes than expected
to achieve the flow rate needed
to dispose of the town’s wastewater,
making it much more
expensive than other options
available.
Mr Hills said the core
recovered from the first
hole is now on loan to the
Canterbury University’s
geology department.
“They’re pretty interested in
it because it’s the only drill core
ever recovered at these depths
from the Akaroa area,” he said.
“It offers a unique insight into
the volcanic history of Banks
Peninsula.”
Association chairman Richard
Suggate said something needed
to be done now.
“The council should do
something because there have
been enough incidents that keep
repeating themselves.”
Deputy Mayor and Banks
Peninsula councillor Andrew
Turner said the city council
was taking steps to improve the
state of the jetty in the short
term.
“They get cleaned on a sixweek
cycle but that clearly hasn’t
worked. We are also working
towards putting some plastic
netting on the helm.”
Things were made worse
when the city council removed
five portaloos at the start of the
month before 7816 cruise ship
passengers and crew arrived in
the area.
The city council has since
installed a toilet block on the end
of the wharf.
Mr Hamilton, however,
was not convinced this would
stop tourists from abusing his
facilities.
“After refusing to buy
anything, I have had
Fire rages, homes at risk
Mr Hamilton said the
behaviour of tourists was putting
off the majority of his local
clientele from visiting his cinema
and cafe.
“There’s definitely a lack of
locals around until the ship
leaves, we have a number of
clients and customers who have
said they won’t come when the
not the answer.
“It certainly isn’t my view that
Cr Turner suggested that a
Lyttelton’s British Hotel: Bikies,
The bar that occupied
the basement in the old
British Hotel building
has lost its liquor
licence and closed.
Julia Evans looks back
on the colourful history
of the iconic Lyttelton
landmark
FOR THE last 71 years, the
British Hotel has been a watering
hole for sailors, Lyttelton locals,
cross-dressers, punk rockers,
Epitaph Riders motorcycle gang
members and even Iggy Pop.
But, while the bar in the hotel
on the corner of Norwich Quay
and Oxford St – most recently
known as the Hell Fire Club –
has closed its doors for now, it is
remembered for its history.
The British Hotel first opened
in 1874, and was named after its
predominantly United Kingdombased
clientele.
It reopened in 1947 after a
fire and, ever since, the hotel
has been home to a number of
infamous bars – most notably
The Dive.
Other incarnations have
included El Santo Porteno before
the quakes, the Back Bar and the
British Basement.
HISTORY: The British Hotel has had a long and colourful history since it opened in 1947 on the
corner of Lyttelton’s Norwich Quay and Oxford St.
Former sailor Jack Mahoney
lived and drank at the hotel every
day for 17 years from 1960 when
he wasn’t at sea.
“The best part was the great
people who lived there. There
aren’t many of them left, but they
were good people.”
But there was a flip side, in
which the bar earned a notorious
reputation for fights.
“There were quite a few fights,
but no one really got hurt. A
punch on the chin never hurt
anyone.”
He said boxers like Joesph
Parker would not have held their
own at the British.
“Someone was saying to me
the other day after the world title
fight, I’ve seen a better fight in the
British and they’re not wrong.”
The bar was notorious for after
hours parties with black out curtains
pulled so the police couldn’t
see what was going on inside.
“On Sundays, when the ferry
was in, all the boys would come
up from the ferry and start
drinking, which was a big no, no
on Sundays, but we covered for
them,” Mr Mahoney said.
“I was playing pool and the
next thing I get a tap on the
shoulder by the senior sergeant. I
told him they were my guests . . .
and gave him phoney names.”
Mr Mahoney said the next
minute the police were back and
asking for the names – which he
couldn’t remember.
“But he left it. They knew it was
better off them drinking there
than on the streets.”
Canada native Guy Daigneault
owned the hotel from 1961-1974,
he opened the Back Bar in 1967,
when 6pm drinking restrictions
were lifted.
“The place was so well-known
around the world. I was in
Montreal once and someone said
there’s Guy over there from the
British. I couldn’t believe it.”
Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
booze, brawls . . . and Iggy Pop
But Mr Daigneault said he
had “to sleep with one eye open”
as the place was renowned for
fighting.
To this day, blood remains
on the roof from a knife fight
between Russian seamen.
“Most of the violence was
locals, not even
the seamen
like everyone
thought,” he
said.
Mr
Daigneault said
some of the
Rebecca
Lovell-Smith
best days of his
life were spent
there.
“I chose to
raise my four kids there. But it
was hard work, I devoted my life
to that pub . . . I spent a lot of
money doing it up.”
The lease was taken over by
late Lyttelton legends, Hilary and
Jack McKenna, throughout the
1970s and 80s.
Mr Mahoney said the McKennas
and Mr Daigneault took him in
and treated him like family.
During their stint, the hotel
became home to the first gay bar
in the city.
The British was divided into
three separate bars. The Back Bar
COLOURFUL: Everyone from Lyttelton locals to seamen and
motor-cycle gang members have visited the British Hotel.
– the gay bar out the back, The
Dive – which was down in the
basement and upstairs a bar for
Lyttelton locals.
The hotel made its mark
throughout the 80s by hosting
early gigs of The Androidss and
Louie and the Hotsticks.
Famously, United States punk
icon Iggy Pop watched The
Androidss play there in 1979.
Their set included a cover of
Iggy Pop’s The Passenger and he
shared a whisky with them at the
bar afterwards.
“They’re tough as bitches, but
they’re beautiful,” Iggy Pop was
quoted by The Press.
In the same decade, it was
often filled with members of the
Epitaph Riders motor-cycle gang.
The gang was formed in
Christchurch in 1969 and was involved
in the country’s first gang
war with the Devils Henchmen
in 1974.
But the building was closed after
the February 22, 2011, earthquake,
before it was saved from
the bulldozer in 2015 by Rebecca
Lovell-Smith and her husband,
Christian Carruthers.
Almost daily, former patrons
stopped by the hotel to tell tales
of its history.
Ms Lovell-Smith said it was
moments like that which made
the building’s ongoing restoration
worth while.
“I get a lot of people who come
out just to talk to you about their
experiences. I had a sailor or a
fisherman just yesterday tell me
stories about how he used to stay
there when he was in port. He
said he remembers the publican
falling down the stairs,” she said.
And she promises pints will be
pulled in the basement again.
“We just need to do a bit more
work. But even next year something
will be there,” she said.
“We want to honour all the
different stages of the bar from
way back, to more recently. It’s
a good place that has good
bands.”
Crime camera funding
•From page 1
The plan for the cameras
was prompted by a spate
of aggravated burglaries in
Sumner and Mt Pleasant
last year.
A 31-year-old man was
jailed for three years in
relation to them and other
offences.
Ms Preston said additional
cameras would also
be needed with Sumner Rd
expected to reopen next
year, which is expected to
cost an additional $20,000.
“When we started
going down this track it
was nearly two years ago
and at that point, we didn’t
know if the road was going
to reopen.”
Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board member and city
councillor Sara Templeton
supported the installation
of security cameras.
“I know that this is a
real issue in the area with
a range of burglaries and
incidents with cars, trailers
and boats.”
Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board member Darrell
Latham said the cameras
would only be part of the
solution.
“From my perspective,
the cameras must be complemented
Brutally Honest
by Melanie Brown
The tell-all memoir from the loudest, proudest Spice Girl -
and the truth behind the headlines
As one-fifth of the iconic Spice Girls and judge on X Factor
and America’s Got Talent, Melanie Brown, a.k.a Scary
Spice, has been an international star since her twenties.
Brutally Honest is an expose of the struggles and acute pain
that lay behind the glamour and success.
With deep personal insight, remarkable frankness and
trademark Yorkshire humour, the book removes the mask
of fame and reveals the true story behind the Spice Girls, as
well as the horror of her most recent marriage and her 10
year struggle to be free.
Warrior
by Simon Mannering
Simon Mannering is one of elite sport’s great enigmas. From
2005 to 2018 he was a regular fixture in the Warriors and
Kiwis rugby league teams and has captained both. He is one
of only a handful of players to have played 300 NRL games
for one club and, remarkably, he’s the only one who has ever
done it flying back and forth across the Tasman every second
weekend. Yet little is known about him as he shuns the spotlight
and seldom does interviews.
Warriors and former All Blacks doctor John Mayhew rates
Simon alongside Richie McCaw and Buck Shelford for sheer
toughness and his ability to play through pain and illness is
legendary.
While the Warriors have been up and down over the years,
Simon Mannering has maintained a consistently high standard
of play and regularly led tackle counts.
Yet he was not a sporting prodigy. In Warrior, Simon explains
how he transformed himself from a sports-mad kid with
mediocre talents into one of the greats of New Zealand sport.
A Diamond in the Dust
by Frauke Bolten-Boshammer
The powerful true story of how one woman turned outback dust
into a diamond empire.
Within minutes of landing in Kununurra, Frauke Bolten had made
up her mind to get on a plane back home to Germany. The dusty
frontier town was no place for a woman. However, Frauke stayed,
determined to help her husband carve out a new life farming.
Tragedy struck just three years later when Friedrich took his own
life and she was left to raise their family alone.
Twenty-six years after she sold her first necklace, Kimberley Fine
Diamonds in Kununurra is now home to one of the world’s largest
collections of Argyle pink diamonds, with a client list that includes
Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. Frauke is credited for not only
pioneering an industry, but for putting the tiny outback town and its
precious diamonds on the map.
A Diamond in the Dust is a tale of love and loss, hardship and
heartache, but ultimately the inspiring story of how a young girl
from Germany overcame tragedy to pioneer a diamond empire in
one of the most unforgiving terrains on earth.
The Rescuers
by Laura Greaves
Dogs are renowned for their loyalty, and those saved from
animal shelters or rescue groups seem to be especially
devoted to the humans who have offered them a second
chance. In this extraordinary collection, meet the brave
dogs that have shown incredible courage – even risking
death – to protect their people.
There’s Leala, the Staffy who raced for help when her
two-year-old owner fell in a dam; Buddy, the labrador who
licked his owner awake to save her from a house fire; and
Brian, the pit bull who valiantly fought off three other dogs
to protect his owner.
From unforgettable moments of courage to heart-warming
tales of true loyalty, these are the stories of some of the
most heroic rescue dogs in the world.
Foundation marks 25 years of work
in Sumner and Ferrymead
contribution to the charitable
community trust. Since
1993 the foundation has
given almost $100,000 in
grants to people pursuing
education, cultural or
sporting endeavours, and to
community groups.
The foundation was the
vision of former Sumner resident
Dora Grut, who married
a Canadian and moved to
Vancouver.
In 1991, she donated
$10,500 to start the Sumner
Community Trust, which she
based around the Vancouver
Foundation.
The Vancouver Foundation
was started in 1943
with $1000 donated by a
receptionist, Alice McKay.
She donated the money to
assist the wives and families
of Vancouver soldiers killed
in France during World War
CELEBRATION: Chairman
John Taylor and founding
member Julie Cunningham
cut the cake to celebrate the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation’s
25th anniversary.
was impressed with her generosity
and donated a further
$10,000, then encouraged
nine others to do the same.
Since Dora Grut’s initial
donation, the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation
has grown significantly
through the generosity of
many benefactors within the
community.
Only the interest from the
invested funds is used for
grants, and the foundation
considers applications from
groups and individuals in a
catchment area running from
east of Tunnel Rd to Taylors
Mistake. Donations to the
foundation can be made for
a specific community use
or asset, or as discretionary
funds.
Lyttelton band to hold benefit
concert for seafarers centre
• By Louis Day
LYTTELTON country band
The Eastern is holding a benefit
concert with proceeds going
towards the Lyttelton Seafarers
Centre.
The Light House Benefit
Concert will be held on December
22 at Blue Smoke in
Woolston.
Chairman of the Lyttelton
Seafarers Centre Charitable Trust
Reverend John McLister said the
centre was seriously underfunded
and the proceeds made from the
concert would go a long way in
ensuring they could continue to
support seafarers.
The centre has had over 10,000
visits from seafarers docking in
Lyttelton since it opened three
years ago.
The centre provides seafarers
with assistance, amenities, care,
support and Wi-Fi so they can
speak to their family back home.
Rev McLister said seafarers
were often poorly paid and
exploited by the companies that
they worked for.
He spoke of the experience of a
HELPING HAND: Chairman of the Lyttelton Seafarers Centre
Charitable Trust Reverend John McLister with three seamen
from China.
Filipino seafarer called Benji.
“For every US$100 he converts
into Kiwi dollars, Benji is $40 out
of pocket on the exchange rate.”
Rev McLister said without the
support of the community, the
centre would struggle to continue
to help seafarers like Benji.
“Last month, that man wanted
to go to the city, so he called a
taxi. The taxi driver charged him
US$100 for a ride into town. That
is 10 per cent of what Benji earns
in a month”
Sumner library to close over Xmas
REPAIRS: The Sumner Library will close on Christmas Eve.
SUMNER LIBRARY will be
closed between Christmas and
New Year to allow work to be
done to fix “minor defects” on the
building.
The Matuku Takotako: Sumner
Centre will close on Christmas
Eve and reopen on New Year’s
Eve.
“We’re taking the opportunity
over the Christmas period to allow
contractors to complete some
work on the polished ground
floor,” city council head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson said.
“The work is part of some
minor defects still outstanding
from when the facility was built
in 2017, and is a normal part of
any new build.”
Ms Robertson said the Christmas
holiday period was chosen
to cause as little disruption to the
community as possible.
“All the other Christchurch
City Libraries in the network are
staying open between Christmas
and New Year, so people can still
have plenty of options for getting
their holiday fix of library items
and services.”
Normal hours at the Matuku
Takotako: Sumner Centre will
resume from January 3, after the
New Year holidays.
CAROL SINGING in Lyttelton
is set for a return this Christmas
after a seven-year absence.
Three of Lyttelton’s historic
churches were destroyed in the
February 22, 2011, earthquake,
putting an end to the longstanding
custom of carol singing
at church.
However, after the reopening
of the restored St Saviour’s
Anglican Church, Lyttelton residents
will have the opportunity
to sing Christmas carols again
on Friday.
Vicar of the Lyttelton Parish
John McLister said he was
delighted to see a Lyttelton
tradition of over 150 years be
restored.
JINGLE BELLS: St Saviour’s Anglican Church will hold
Christmas carols, the first time a church has hosted carols in
Lyttelton for seven years.
Carol singing to return
to Lyttelton church
“It will be lovely to see this
tradition return to Lyttelton,
there is something magical
about singing carols in a church
surrounded by stained-glass
windows and with candles
burning. Before the quakes,
all the local churches had
carol services. The midnight
Christmas service was a bit of a
Lyttelton institution.”
Carols will be held in the
church at 7pm, 17 Winchester St.
Music from The Saints
Youth Orchestra and Irish music
from The Rice Paddies will be on
offer.
Mulled wine will be served
and there will be a prize for best
Christmas hat.
Learning to share stuff
OF ALL THE things I
expected to deal with
as a stay-at-home-dad,
Vittoria being mean to
another baby was not one
of them.
Maybe that was a foolish
assumption, I don’t know,
I’ve only got the one kid
remember.
What are you supposed
to do in that situation?
And what is the other parent
supposed to do?
Is there a book on this?
On Tuesday I took Vittoria
to a Plunket playgroup
in Papanui on the advice of
a fellow full-time dad.
It was an enjoyable
morning, the sun was out
and there was plenty of
toys and other kids for Vittoria
to play with.
During the course of her
rambling about exploring,
she went inside and sat
next to another wee lass,
only a couple of months
younger than her who was
playing with a book.
So, naturally, she steals
said book off the poor kid.
The other baby’s mum
was really good about it,
even told her daughter to
share.
However, Vittoria was
not satisfied with just taking
her book. Oh no, she
started grabbing anything
this kid was holding,
ignoring my vain pleas for
ELEVATED: Vittoria
getting a unobstructed
view of Mother Goose
and other classic floats
at the recent Santa
Parade.
her to desist or share.
Eventually the other
baby got sick of Vittoria’s
shtick and went to grab her
book back.
Vittoria promptly hit her
in the head with it.
I was mortified, I’d never
seen her hit anyone else
before (she’s hit me heaps,
but not in anger).
The wee lass started
crying and I profusely
apologised to the mum
We will deliver!
VITTORIA
& Matt
and told Vittoria off – but I
don’t know if I did enough?
Vittoria’s had bigger kids
do similar to her and I
didn’t know what I should
have done then either.
Other people’s kids seem
like a minefield topic.
Either way, I took Vittoria
back outside to where
there were older kids than
her so she couldn’t cause
any more grief.
I suppose I’ll get better at
this, I really don’t think I
want a bully for a daughter,
regardless of how dang
cute she is.
In a much nicer update,
we took Vittoria to the
recent Santa Parade in the
city.
I’m stoked the old floats
like Mother Goose and the
Haunted House are still
about. I haven’t been to a
parade in quite a few years
so it was cool to see the old
classics and share them
with Vittoria.
WE ARE ON THE
MOVE AGAIN...
TO CELEBRATE 100 years
of business in Christchurch,
Archibalds Motors has decided
to give money away rather than
spend it on a party.
Ten charities have been shortlisted
for the chance to win part
of $100,000 in the Drive for
Good campaign, organised by
the motor company.
Members of the public are able
to vote for the charity they think
should get the money.
the company’s
showroom.
He
congratulated the charities on
making it to the top 10 “final”
and for their efforts to give back
to the community.
The charities were nominated
by staff and include Canterbury
West Coast Air Rescue Trust,
Christchurch Early Intervention
HELPING: Representatives from the 10 charities that have been chosen as ‘finalists’ in the
Archibalds Motors Drive for Good campaign.
executive John Fairhall said a
staff member came up with the
donation idea and others agreed
it was the right thing to do.
“Plus, they still had their usual
“Turning 100 is really
the first major milestone
that we’ve celebrated in a
significant way,” he said.
Voting runs for three
months, with the winning
charities to be named in March.
THE MT Pleasant Community
Centre will hold a Christmas
gathering for people without
family or friends over the
holidays.
Community development coordinator
Kathy Bartlett said she
did not want anyone who did not
want to spend Christmas alone to
have to.
“I think we all know it can
be an isolating time of year if
you don’t have the cosy family
atmosphere.”
There will be a barbecue and
guests are welcome to bring
a shared plate and their own
refreshments to the gathering.
Ms Bartlett said everyone will
be welcome.
“We know that there are a wide
range of people here. There are
lonely, older people, but there are
also recent immigrants that don’t
have family here.”
If you want to attend call the
community centre to reserve a
place on 384 1656.
Deck the halls
Christmas isn’t Christmas without a decoration or two around the home.
Whether its outdoor lights with a waving Santa or
just draping tinsel across your mantelpiece, there are
many ways to celebrate the festive season in your home.
Go natural
Driftwood painted white with LED lights wrapped
around, or pine cones with a touch of silver spray
paint, make beautiful natural additions to the home
at this time of year. If you have a tree branch around
the home, why not cut it up into discs and spray paint
white stars and reindeer on the disc. Drill a hole in the
top and thread some gardeners string through the hole
and you have an instant decoration to hang on the tree
or somewhere around the home. Cover polystyrene
balls in ripped linen, hessian and cotton strips. These
can either be hung up or a number placed in a bowl on
the table.
Tinsel town
Many love the glitter and sparkle that tinsel brings
but how about using it in different ways. A threetiered
cake plate with tinsel laid on each plate with
baubles then placed on top, can look really impressive
as a centrepiece for the table. Make your own wreath
by wrapping tinsel around and around a polystyrene
circle. Hang just as it is, or hot glue gun baubles on to
create extra wow.
Table setting
Sometimes the simplest decorations on the table
can look the most stunning. A beautiful napkin rolled
up with a piece of red and white ribbon, or rosemary
wreath looks amazing. Why not place a hessian runner
down the middle of the table and add greenery and
candles in jars on top to create a wonderful centrepiece.
If you have a children’s eating table, why not put a
long piece of brown paper as a table cloth. Draw large
circles where the plates can go and write Christmas
questions beside each plate outline. A little bottle with
a red and white paper straw is great too. Put a jar of
red and green crayons on the table. When the kids are
finished their dinner, they can play noughts and crosses
or hangman or just draw pictures.
WITH MARY IN FAITH
TĀTOU KO MERE E WHAKAPONO ANA
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
This year has been particularly special in that so many of our past students and staff
have responded to our call to join a new group. Named Rauru, the group has been
formed to strengthen and support our Marian College community. Past students and
staff of Marian College, St Mary’s College (Christchurch) and McKillop College, are
warmly invited to register for Rauru and help us shape the future of Marian.
Collective dialogue and strategic visioning are underway as we prepare for a new
school. Work includes development of a brief to ensure our Special Catholic Character,
values and culture are captured and reflected in our new school.
We appreciate Marian College is part of the bigger picture and we support the Bishop
in taking due care of process and in making informed decisions for the benefit of the
Catholic Diocese of Christchurch as a whole. The old saying is true – good things
take time.
Thank you to our Board of Trustees, our school staff and community, and members of
the Marian Foundation for your support and fantastic work throughout 2018.
To our Marian girls – relax and enjoy a well-earned holiday. We look forward to
having you back refreshed, inspired and ready for 2019 at Marian College.
And finally, congratulations to our 2018 Marian leavers:
we wish you all the very best and please stay in touch.
Wishing you good health and blessings this Christmas.
Jan Paterson
Marian College Board of Trustees
THE GIFT OF GIVING
Our Young Vinnies Group helps support the important work of the
Society of St Vincent de Paul. Recently the group spent a lunchtime
wrapping Christmas presents for the Vinnie’s Christmas Party for
people in need.
Marian College has a long tradition of service. Both students and staff
members are actively involved and contribute positively to the wider
community. All students complete at least six hours of meaningful
service within the school and community every year.
PRIZE WINNERS
WHIRLWIND
WOW TRIP
Congratulations to Catherine Ryan (right)
and Louise Daly (left) who have been
awarded 2018 Marian College dux and
proxime accessit respectively.
Marian College Principal Mary-Lou
Davidson says major prize winners
demonstrate exceptional performance
and dedication across all aspects of life
at Marian College – in academia, special
character, leadership, music, sport,
environment, culture and service.
The Marian College PTA Grace Awards
are very special awards for senior students
who quietly go about their learning, being
kind and caring, participating in school
life and sometimes managing through
challenges. These students often go ‘under
the radar’ and as the award criteria says
– they just get on with school and are not
always officially recognised. This year
Grace Awards were presented to Mia
Blyth, Renee Rae, Zoe Frame, Molly Ford
and Hannah Manalaysay.
A full list of prize recipients and
photographs are on the College website.
IT’S
BUSINESS TIME!
Recently, Year 10 Marian College
students had the opportunity to pitch
their business ideas to a panel of judges
as part of the three-day Young Enterprise
BP Business Challenge programme.
The hands-on learning event creates
opportunities for students to develop
their skills, engage with local business
people and learn how a good business
works. The programme covers learning
in English, Mathematics and Statistics,
Social Sciences, Digital Technology and
Commerce subjects.
Described by some as the highlight
of the year, senior students studying
textiles at Marian College have the
opportunity to travel to Wellington for a
two-day whirlwind WOWtrip. The group
experienced the World of WearableArt
Awards Show, explored two tertiary
institutes offering textile and design
programmes and visited the Beehive.
“The show was incredible with amazing
outfits and dancers. This was a wonderful
way to end the term,” says Year 12 Marian
College student Phoebe O’Regan.
The group also attended the Suffrage 125
exhibition Whakatū Wāhine at Museum of
New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Boy Erased
A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family
by Garrard Conley
The son of a Baptist pastor and deeply embedded in church life
in small town Arkansas, as a young man Garrard Conley was
terrified and conflicted about his sexuality.
When Garrard was a nineteen-year-old college student, he was
outed to his parents, and was forced to make a life-changing
decision: either agree to attend a church-supported conversion
therapy program that promised to “cure” him of homosexuality; or risk
losing family, friends, and the God he had prayed to every day of his
life. Through an institutionalised Twelve-Step Program heavy on Bible study, he was
supposed to emerge heterosexual, ex-gay, cleansed of impure urges and stronger in his
faith in God for his brush with sin. Instead, even when faced with a harrowing and brutal
journey, Garrard found the strength and understanding to break out in search of his true
self and forgiveness.
By confronting his buried past and the burden of a life lived in shadow, Garrard traces
the complex relationships among family, faith, and community. At times heartbreaking,
at times triumphant, this memoir is a testament to love that survives despite all odds.
She Was The Quiet One
by Michele Campbell
The gripping new novel from Sunday Times bestselling author Michele Campbell
Because murderers are never who you expect…
She was the quiet one… but is she guilty?
For twin sisters Rose and Bel, enrolling at the prestigious new boarding school
should have been a fresh start. But with its sinister rituals and traditions, Odell
soon brings out a deadly rivalry between the sisters.
For Sarah and husband Heath, the chance to teach at Odell seems like the best
thing that ever happened to their small family – a chance to rise through the ranks
and put the past behind them.
Until one dark night ends in murder.
But who’s guilty and who’s telling the truth? And who’s been in on it all along..?
Korako reflects on 2018
National
List MP for
Port Hills
Nuk Korako
reflects on
the past year
and looks
forward to
Christmas
Pirate’s Corner
Boaties’ Xmas list
I’M LOOKING out over the
Opawaho/Heathcote River as I
think about this column.
The willows are resplendent
in their greenery, the birdlife is
out in force and in chorus, and
nature is signalling the approach
of Christmas.
And, of course, as our work
lives wind down, our family
lives are winding up as we
frantically buy presents, set
menus, and try and lose that
last pound, knowing that pound
will be replaced with five more
after Christmas Day. And we
wouldn’t change this for the
world.
Because Christmas is a time
to put aside the weight of the
world, put on some weight, and
focus on family, friends and
a small period of feasting to
celebrate a year that will have
been many things to us all.
For me, 2018 has seen a
dramatic change from being
in Government to being in
FEAST: Nuk Korako says Christmas is a time to put aside the
weight of the world and focus on family, friends and feasting.
Opposition. And it’s been a time
of renewal for my wife Chris
and I as we’ve thought about
what being in opposition means
and how we can still make a
difference for the Port Hills and
for New Zealand. I’ve embraced
the opportunity and can’t wait
for 2019.
It’s also an appropriate
moment to acknowledge what
we are all trying to achieve,
whether we are on one political
side or the other – and that
is a better life for all New
Zealanders. So I would like
to wish my Parliamentary
colleagues, Ruth Dyson and
Eugenie Sage and their families,
a merry Christmas.
And from my whanau to you
all – a very merry Christmas.
If you’re heading away for the
holidays, I hope you travel safely
and get the rest and relaxation
you’ve worked so hard for this
year. And for those who are
staying here, well, I often ask
myself why I would want to
head away from the loveliest
part of Christchurch – the Port
Hills. Enjoy all the pleasures of
our beautiful electorate over the
Christmas holiday break.
Meri kirihimete me nga mihi
o te tau hou – wishing you
a happy festive season and a
prosperous new year.
CHRISTMAS IS not far away
and for those of you who are
thinking about what to buy your
boatie husband, wife, boyfriend,
girlfriend, daughter or son, here
are some ideas from Gary, Santa’s
new boating adviser.
1. A new lifejacket. Throw the
old kapok one away and get a
modern lifejacket that will keep
your loved one afloat should you
end up in the water. Go to your
local boating retailer and ensure
you buy the right jacket for the
type of boating they will partake
in. Make sure there is a crotch
strap fitted.
2. A waterproof hand-held
VHF radio. This is a must and
can be purchased at any good
boat shop or chandler.
3. A personal locator beacon
(PLB). For those boating in lakes
or areas where there is no cellphone
coverage, these are a musthave
item. Remember to register
them when purchased, all the
information is in the instructions.
4. First-aid kit. This is a nobrainer;
every boat should have
one.
5. Sunscreen. It might seem
silly, but nothing can spoil a day
quicker than sunburn.
6. Wind and waterproof jacket.
Sometimes the weather can turn,
even if the forecast was initially
good. Hypothermia is not something
you want.
7. A good pair of sunglasses.
The glare on the water is not good
for visibility or the eyes.
8. A thermos so you can either
have a nice cuppa or cold drink
on hand.
9. A boating safety course.
Put this list somewhere safe,
give the items some thought,
leave a note for Santa, and I am
sure he will be able to assist. On
that note, remember two things:
“If you can’t be heard, you can’t
be helped” and “nobody’s faster
than disaster.”
Take care out there. Have a
great Christmas and New Year.
Heathcote chasing historic season
• By Gordon Findlater
HEATHCOTE CRICKET Club
are one win away from becoming
the first winners of metro
cricket’s one-day championship.
On Sunday, Heathcote defeated
St Albans by 125 runs in
their metro championship semifinal
at Heathcote Domain. The
win means they will now host
Merivale-Papanui in the championship
final on Sunday.
The championship grade was
established this year, replacing
the former senior A grade. The
championship consists of some
former teams from the senior A
grade, such as Heathcote, and
reserve teams from some of the
bigger premiership clubs.
Heathcote are also looking
like early favourites to gain
promotion to the premiership
at the end of the summer. The
top overall side on points from
the one-day, T20, and two-day
formats in the championship will
have the option to move to the
premiership next summer.
“That’s been the objective since
the start of the season. We’re off
to a really good start and feel we
have a really complete team more
than capable of winning promotion,”
said Heathcote bowler Ben
Cochrane.
Batting first on Sunday, Heathcote
got off to a bright start.
Captain Jordan Horrell and Matt
House put on an opening stand
of 53. Horrell went on to make
ON A ROLL: Heathcote are one win away from capturing
the one-day championship title and going unbeaten in the
competition.
52, while No 3 Nick Durham
top-scored with 76.
Healthy contributions from
the lower order, highlighted by
a quick fire 31 from 20 deliveries
by Craig Davenport, helped
Heathcote through to a healthy
total of 257/7 from their 50 overs.
In defending their total, two
wickets in the opening four overs
to Cochrane and Nick Turner
put Heathcote on the front foot.
Consistent wicket-taking meant
St Albans were unable to ever
mount any real challenge, with
just two players scoring more
than 20.
Heathcote dismissed St Albans
in the 36th over for 132. Tom
Payne was the best of the bowlers
with 3-20, Turner picked up
3-32, while Cochrane finished
with 2-25.
That continued an unbeaten
run for Heathcote in the one-day
competition after recording eight
wins in the round-robin.
It was a busy weekend for
SPORTS
Heathcote. On Saturday they
increased their promotion hopes
with a strong opening day in
their two-day match with East
Christchurch Shirley.
Heathcote hold a strong first
innings lead after batting first
and scoring 245. Payne top
scored with 75, while Horrell
contributed 57. Young Shirley
Boys’ High School seamer Marek
Bungard then did the damage,
with an impressive 7-22 as he
helped his side roll East Shirley
for 107.
Meanwhile, Sumner have
a first innings lead in their
two-day match against Merivale-
Papanui at Edgar MacIntosh
Park. After electing to bowl
first Sumner dismissed their
opposition for 154. Jonny
Percasky 4-51 and Dan Vann
3-41, were the best of the
bowlers.
Sumner just managed to
eclipse the total in their first
innings. Opener George Moore
top-scored with 65.
Motoring
• By Ross Kiddie
MY WIFE will tell you I’m not a
big fan of supermarkets, and she
is right, I see them as a necessary
evil.
However, there is one thing
that I find favour with, and that is
when it comes to pay, the item is
scanned through the barcode and
that is what it costs.
It should be that simple when it
comes to buying cars – one price,
no discounts, what you see on the
price tag is what you pay.
Honda has utilised that price
promise concept for several years,
and it’s been very successful for
the company, people rock up and
there is no need to talk turkey
over the price.
Toyota, too, have just incorporated
that method of selling and
judging by recent sales figures it’s
keeping Toyota in a comfortable
position as the end-of-year sales
figures roll in.
Toyota’s success this year has
also been buoyed by the arrival
of a new Corolla, a car which
doesn’t look that much different
to that of the previous generation,
but underneath it has had some
significant changes for comfort,
safety and driveability.
The Corolla lands with a choice
of five different models, two of
those are hybrid. Regular readers
will recall my hybrid evaluation
at the beginning of last month,
and it served to convince me that
hybrids are a viable future as we
head into the electric revolution.
However, this evaluation surrounds
the mid-spec SX model
which has a traditional power
plant, a 2-litre four-cylinder
petrol engine. Gone is the 1.8-litre
unit of the previous generation;
in the name of progress, the new
power plant is more refined than
before, has more power and marginally
greater fuel economy.
Toyota rates the new engine
with 125kW at the top end and
200Nm of torque, up 21 per cent
and 15 per cent respectively. The
points of delivery are quite tall
in the rev band – 6600rpm and
4800rpm, however, such are the
overall outputs there is still a
broad spread of power. Take into
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
Nothing has changed in Corolla – except everything
TOYOTA COROLLA SX: No-haggle price of $32,490
account as well, the engine drives
through a paddle-shift continuously
variable transmission which
is stepped through 10 points,
which means the engine isn’t
loaded.
Together there is good harmony
and fluid response to accelerator
input. The engine feels quite zingy
and strong, it works the rev band
freely and, I guess, you’d expect
nothing less, Toyota has built millions
of Corolla engines and I’d be
surprised if it didn’t feel right.
It is also an engine which is
light on fuel use. That’s a necessary
criteria in these days of wayward
fuel prices. Toyota claims
a six-litre per 100km (47mpg)
combined cycle average, which
sits well with the fuel usage readout
in the test car. It was showing
a constant 7.2l/100km (39mpg)
• Price – Toyota Corolla SX,
$32,490
• Dimensions – Length,
4652mm; width, 1843mm;
height, 1697mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
200Nm, 10-step CVT
BAY HARBOUR
Local
News
Now
PAGE 27
Fire rages, homes at risk
during a mix of pre-Christmas
inner-city driving and a Port Hills
loop. At 100km/h the engine
is working over slowly at just
1500rpm, returning an instantaneous
fuel usage consumption of
just 4.5l/100km (63mpg).
My wife had a work Christmas
function to attend in Barrys Bay,
so the Corolla was used to travel
to that event.
The Christchurch/Akaroa
Highway isn’t my favourite piece
of road given the volume of traffic,
but the Corolla responded
well on the few overtaking
opportunities that presented
themselves. An overtaking time
of 6.8sec is possible (80km/h-
120km/h), while from a standstill
it will also launch to 100km/h in
9.2sec.
Those figures give you some
indication of its zest and ability. It
also handles nicely with beautiful
steering and strong steering
feedback. That’s no surprise,
over the years Corollas destined
for our market have had chassis
engineering developed for our
roads and that certainly showed
on the twists and turns of the
Akaora hill.
Add in the development
work Toyota has done with the
chassis in the latest generation
car and you have a dynamic
handling vehicle, one which
belies its role as a mainstream
hatchback.
Elsewhere, the Corolla stands
out for its quality of build and
high amount of fitment. At the
new no-haggle price of $32,490,
the SX includes all the features
you need for convenience and, of
course, comfort has been a high
manufacturing priority.
On the subject of prices, an
entry-level base model Corolla
is available for $29,990, and that
would be the car for me, but if
you want all the bells and whistles
then the ZR at $37,490 is also
there to tempt.
According to Toyota’s
advertising slogan, nothing has
changed for the new generation
Corolla – except everything. Sure,
it looks like the Corolla we have
come to know and love, and it
certainly drives like a Corolla
should, the only thing is that it is
much better in every respect.

WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has b en a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
New bid to fix potholes
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
council.”
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
New World Fe ry Rd butcher
Jeremy Garth and his team, the
It was the firs time Mr Garth
“We produced some top quality
products and came away
with a g od result so we’re very
The preparation for this year’s
intense as the team members
met in Auckland every two
Mr Garth, who has b en a
competition brought back his
“Doing a l thi stuff and
m eting new people, s eing new
ideas, it just brings that flair
back for you,” he said.
Mr Garth hopes t own a
butcher shop of his own someday
but says for now he wi l focus
on ge ting mor experience
and on the 2020 cha lenge.
“In two years’ time, we’ l be
Elite Meats owner Corey
Mr Winder and his team, the
He said the cha lenge started
The preparation for this
was intense as the team
“To get second behind Ireland
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agr e
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
in the February and June, 20 1,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
Mr Garth, who has b en a
“Doing a l thi stuff and
Mr Garth hopes t own a
Mr Winder and his team, the
He said the cha lenge started
The preparation for this
“To get second behind Ireland
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
