<strong>Facilit<strong>at</strong>ing</strong> <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>enterprise</strong> <strong>level</strong><br />

The benefits of <strong>an</strong> integr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>an</strong>d purpose-built LIMS solution. By Dave Champagne<br />

Pharmaceutical comp<strong>an</strong>ies c<strong>an</strong> no longer afford to delay<br />

the implement<strong>at</strong>ion of next gener<strong>at</strong>ion tools to help them<br />

m<strong>an</strong>age the increasing amount of <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> gener<strong>at</strong>ed by their<br />

org<strong>an</strong>iz<strong>at</strong>ions. Working with multiple, dispar<strong>at</strong>e systems<br />

with minimal to no integr<strong>at</strong>ion is no longer <strong>an</strong> option.<br />

Pharmaceutical comp<strong>an</strong>ies need tools th<strong>at</strong> help them improve <strong>enterprise</strong>wide<br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ions, reach critical decisions faster <strong>an</strong>d produce timely,<br />

accur<strong>at</strong>e reports on how compounds are progressing, all while maximizing<br />

return on investment, shortening the pipeline life cycle <strong>an</strong>d cutting<br />

costs. The challenge is to successfully streamline <strong>an</strong>d integr<strong>at</strong>e the flow of<br />

<strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> so th<strong>at</strong> <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> has the inform<strong>at</strong>ion they need to make timely<br />

decisions. The solution begins with a purpose-built, <strong>enterprise</strong>-<strong>level</strong><br />

labor<strong>at</strong>ory inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> system (LIMS).<br />

The challenge<br />

With drug development times of approxim<strong>at</strong>ely 15 years <strong>an</strong>d<br />

subsequent costs approaching $2 billion by 2010, pharmaceutical<br />

comp<strong>an</strong>ies are increasingly in search of processes th<strong>at</strong> c<strong>an</strong> help them<br />

consistently deliver a return on investment during the p<strong>at</strong>ent life of a<br />

drug. Enterprise <strong>level</strong> LIMS are key contributors in this effort. Delivering<br />

adv<strong>an</strong>ced functionality th<strong>at</strong> is specific to each stage of the drug<br />

development process, sophistic<strong>at</strong>ed, purpose-built LIMS streamline<br />

processes <strong>an</strong>d help reduce costs, <strong>an</strong>d present org<strong>an</strong>iz<strong>at</strong>ions with unique<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ion opportunities. Purpose-built LIMS provide superior capabilities<br />

by delivering real-time <strong>an</strong>alysis <strong>an</strong>d reports, facilit<strong>at</strong>ing regula-<br />

tory compli<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d product quality, integr<strong>at</strong>ing with the comp<strong>an</strong>y’s<br />

broader network <strong>an</strong>d providing secure access to key <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> throughout<br />

the org<strong>an</strong>iz<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Historically, industry st<strong>an</strong>dard LIMS have only delivered 30-40<br />

percent of specific functionality targeted to each user’s needs, requiring<br />

extensive customiz<strong>at</strong>ion to make th<strong>at</strong> LIMS function in th<strong>at</strong> particular<br />

setting. Such customiz<strong>at</strong>ion is commonly only possible through the use<br />

of proprietary programming l<strong>an</strong>guages th<strong>at</strong> are developed <strong>an</strong>d provided<br />

by the LIMS vendor. The combin<strong>at</strong>ion of minimal industry-specific<br />

functionality <strong>an</strong>d often outd<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>an</strong>d/or costly proprietary l<strong>an</strong>guages has<br />

been particularly troublesome in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition,<br />

pharmaceutical labor<strong>at</strong>ories normally cre<strong>at</strong>e their own user document<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

design document<strong>at</strong>ion, valid<strong>at</strong>ion scripts <strong>an</strong>d help files. As a<br />

consequence, the implement<strong>at</strong>ion of LIMS in various labor<strong>at</strong>ory settings<br />

has been, almost without exception, a long, costly <strong>an</strong>d painful process<br />

not only during install<strong>at</strong>ion, but also in oper<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>an</strong>d maintaining the<br />

system over the years.<br />

The growing m<strong>an</strong>d<strong>at</strong>es of global regul<strong>at</strong>ory compli<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d longterm<br />

<strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> traceability, as well as the complexity of labor<strong>at</strong>ory testing <strong>an</strong>d<br />

emphasis on b<strong>at</strong>ch versus sample <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong>, have forced pharmaceutical<br />

m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers into lengthy, expensive adapt<strong>at</strong>ions of generic LIMS<br />

to meet their specific requirements. Extensive <strong>an</strong>d costly customiz<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

valid<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>an</strong>d implement<strong>at</strong>ion periods, in m<strong>an</strong>y cases lasting 36 months<br />

or more, have become routine, resulting in decreased productivity. However,<br />

with the increasingly higher costs of bringing a new drug to market,

CONNECTS<br />

In response to market growth indic<strong>at</strong>ors, Thermo Fisher<br />

Scientific has introduced a new Inform<strong>at</strong>ics initi<strong>at</strong>ive aimed<br />

<strong>at</strong> bridging the gap between labor<strong>at</strong>ory-gener<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> <strong>an</strong>d<br />

the <strong>enterprise</strong> <strong>level</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> is required for mission<br />

critical <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> decisions. Because of the breadth of our<br />

comp<strong>an</strong>y’s product offerings, <strong>an</strong>d our str<strong>at</strong>egic partnerships,<br />

we are uniquely positioned to offer Thermo Scientific<br />

CONNECTS, <strong>an</strong> <strong>enterprise</strong> <strong>level</strong> solution set th<strong>at</strong> allows<br />

comp<strong>an</strong>ies to more fully integr<strong>at</strong>e the work of the labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />

into the <strong>enterprise</strong>.<br />

CONNECTS enables our customers to extend the business<br />

of science from the labor<strong>at</strong>ory throughout the <strong>enterprise</strong>,<br />

providing both the integr<strong>at</strong>ion of instruments <strong>an</strong>d systems,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d the interoperability necessary to tr<strong>an</strong>sform <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> into<br />

relev<strong>an</strong>t business drivers. In facilit<strong>at</strong>ing this <strong>enterprise</strong>wide<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ion of systems, <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> will have the<br />

inform<strong>at</strong>ion they need to have early insight into how pipeline<br />

drugs or compounds are progressing on a routine basis, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

also have the critical <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> they need before, not after, <strong>an</strong>y<br />

point of crisis th<strong>at</strong> may affect oper<strong>at</strong>ions, shareholder value<br />

or the safety of the consumer. n<br />

pharmaceutical m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers c<strong>an</strong>not afford to delay the implementa-<br />

tion of next gener<strong>at</strong>ion tools th<strong>at</strong> will make them more productive.<br />

Integr<strong>at</strong>ed LIMS<br />

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, we have developed a portfolio of LIMS<br />

th<strong>at</strong> meet the needs of customers <strong>at</strong> every stage of the drug development<br />

process. This is particularly true in the pharmaceuticals industry where<br />

labor<strong>at</strong>ory requirements are unique in research <strong>an</strong>d development, discovery,<br />

<strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>ufacturing. There is no single system th<strong>at</strong> could <strong>an</strong>swer<br />

the unique needs of these labor<strong>at</strong>ories, so it is import<strong>an</strong>t to develop, with<br />

the help of individual customers, purpose-built LIMS for each area of the<br />

pharmaceutical value chain.<br />

Purpose-built LIMS for pharmaceutical applic<strong>at</strong>ions are particularly<br />

relev<strong>an</strong>t. According to the 2008 Str<strong>at</strong>egic Analysis of the US Labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />

Inform<strong>at</strong>ion M<strong>an</strong>agement Systems Market, by Frost & Sulliv<strong>an</strong>, preconfigured<br />

solutions with test methods for specified industries will drive<br />

growth across all markets. The more functionality included in the core<br />

product out-of-the-box, the less risk, lower costs <strong>an</strong>d less time involved<br />

in the implement<strong>at</strong>ion, valid<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>an</strong>d support of the applic<strong>at</strong>ions. The<br />

objective of purpose-built LIMS solutions is to deliver as much domainspecific<br />

functionality as possible th<strong>at</strong> addresses the critical needs of the<br />

labor<strong>at</strong>ory <strong>an</strong>d delivers the increased <strong>enterprise</strong>-<strong>level</strong> access th<strong>at</strong> multisite/multi-user<br />

org<strong>an</strong>iz<strong>at</strong>ions are looking for. According to the same<br />

Frost & Sulliv<strong>an</strong> report, market growth indic<strong>at</strong>ors for LIMS solutions<br />

providers are focused on providing customers with not only purposebuilt<br />

LIMS th<strong>at</strong> are fully integr<strong>at</strong>ed with other labor<strong>at</strong>ory equipment, but<br />

also LIMS th<strong>at</strong> easily align with global <strong>enterprise</strong> solutions.<br />

A coherent str<strong>at</strong>egy th<strong>at</strong> c<strong>an</strong> integr<strong>at</strong>e <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> from a LIMS, chrom<strong>at</strong>ography<br />

<strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> system (CDS), <strong>enterprise</strong> resource pl<strong>an</strong>ning (ERP), m<strong>an</strong>ufacturing<br />

<strong>enterprise</strong> system (MES), electronic labor<strong>at</strong>ory notebooks (ELN),<br />

<strong>an</strong>d other sources across the <strong>enterprise</strong> is a key business driver. Modern<br />

LIMS serve as common pl<strong>at</strong>form frameworks th<strong>at</strong> other inform<strong>at</strong>ics solutions,<br />

instrument<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>enterprise</strong> systems <strong>an</strong>d <strong>enterprise</strong> communic<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

tools c<strong>an</strong> plug into to share common functions, without having to<br />

build them from scr<strong>at</strong>ch for each product.<br />

Conclusion<br />

The world of labor<strong>at</strong>ory inform<strong>at</strong>ics is ch<strong>an</strong>ging to meet the needs<br />

of pharmaceutical comp<strong>an</strong>ies, which are continually searching for ways<br />

to reduce costs, acceler<strong>at</strong>e time-to-market <strong>an</strong>d respond to increasing<br />

regul<strong>at</strong>ory requirements. LIMS c<strong>an</strong> help pharmaceutical comp<strong>an</strong>ies to<br />

respond with more certainty to the m<strong>an</strong>y unforeseen challenges th<strong>at</strong><br />

c<strong>an</strong> often make or break a comp<strong>an</strong>y. Enterprise <strong>level</strong> integr<strong>at</strong>ion is particularly<br />

relev<strong>an</strong>t in today’s business clim<strong>at</strong>e, where near inst<strong>an</strong>t<strong>an</strong>eous<br />

response is required by pharmaceutical comp<strong>an</strong>ies to protect the public<br />

<strong>an</strong>d the environment. LIMS help bring key business knowledge origin<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

in the labor<strong>at</strong>ory to <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> <strong>at</strong> all <strong>level</strong>s of the <strong>enterprise</strong>.<br />

Seamless <strong>enterprise</strong>-wide integr<strong>at</strong>ion is a necessity because it enables<br />

key knowledge origin<strong>at</strong>ing in the labor<strong>at</strong>ory to be available to <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong><br />

in real time. Integr<strong>at</strong>ing the <strong>enterprise</strong> will facilit<strong>at</strong>e better pl<strong>an</strong>ning,<br />

<strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> quality, collabor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>an</strong>d end-to-end report gener<strong>at</strong>ion, all<br />

with the goal of providing <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> dashboard views of key business<br />

metrics, which are essential to effectively run oper<strong>at</strong>ions, <strong>an</strong>d thereby<br />

enabling <strong>m<strong>an</strong>agement</strong> to have the critical <strong>d<strong>at</strong>a</strong> they need before, not after,<br />

<strong>an</strong>y point of crisis. n<br />
