12 Tuesday December 18 2018 Bright mural brought to life at Beckenham School A COLOURFUL mural has been brought to life beside the river at Beckenham School. Well-known artist Ira Mitchell- Kirk has helped pupils to paint a 13m x2m mural on the school’s toilet block. The artwork was unveiled on Thursday and features native birds and a wild landscape. Twenty-five year 7 and 8 pupils helped paint the mural. The project is part of the school’s weekly passion days it holds to allow pupils to work on subjects they are passionate about – from art to mountain biking and baking. Teacher Nicky Dunlop, who is in charge of the art projects for the school’s passion days, helped co-ordinate the painting of the mural. The city council donated a grant of $250, which helped cover the cost of the paint. Mitchell-Kirk donated 40 hours to help complete the project and taught the pupils about time management, budgeting and planning out the mural. Marian students experience colonial life MARIAN COLLEGE students have taken a step back in time to experience early colonial life. Eighty year 10 students spent the day out at Ferrymead Heritage Park recently as part of their social studies course. Students took part in an Amazing Race challenge and Christmas activities including making decorations and baking. The school’s head of social sciences Anna Perry said the students “loved” visiting the park – especially getting dressed up for the day. DRESSED UP: Olivia Tippen and Lily Armstrong.
