Mini national park trust gets award
A CONSERVATION trust which
created a mini national park
on Banks Peninsula has been
recognised at the annual civic
awards.
The Maurice White Native
Forest Trust received an
award at a private ceremony
on Wednesday for services to
conservation.
Twelve recipients were
presented with the city council
awards by Mayor Lianne Dalziel.
Maurice White, who is 94, set
up a fund in 1977 to purchase
land on Banks Peninsula and, in
1987, the first 109ha section was
bought for an ecological project
named Hinewai Reserve.
Following several other
additions, the reserve now
occupies 1250ha near Akaroa
and is highly-valued for its
indigenous flora and fauna,
including geckos, skinks, native
eels and fish.
For more than 30 years,
the trust has worked to
conserve and restore native
bush that the public can access
through an extensive 32km
network of walking tracks,
including a section that makes
up part of the Banks Peninsula
walk.
Well-known botanist Hugh
Wilson, 73, who is a member
of the trust and manages the
reserve, said even though it
the Maurice White Native Forest Trust, which received a civic
That includes about 2500
people walking the Banks
Peninsula track.
“The award is a lovely
recognition of Maurice. I’m very
proud of what we have achieved,
although nature has done most
of it, we’ve just been helping on
the side,” he said.
Mr Wilson wants to see the
reserve grow further in the
future so it extends down to the
sea.
SUMNER RESIDENTS may
know in February if ratepayers
will help fund the security
cameras they want.
Safer Sumner has approached
the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board for a grant of
$16,000 after the police
were unable to fund
the cameras.
The board will make
a decision in February
when it works through
the grant requests.
Safer Sumner’s
Kath Preston said
in her submission
to the board, it was
in desperate need
of support after the cost of the
cameras skyrocketed from $4000
to $20,000.
“The reason why the cost of the
cameras has gone up is because
we have had to align our cameras
with the cameras that the police
use.”
The cameras would be
installed at the entrance to
Sumner on Main Rd, with one
camera monitoring incoming
traffic and one monitoring
outgoing traffic.
The plan for the cameras was
prompted by a spate of aggravated
burglaries in Sumner and
Mt Pleasant last year.
A 31-year-old man was jailed
for three years in relation to them
and other offences.
Ms Preston said additional
cameras would also be needed
with Sumner Rd due to
reopen next year, which
is expected to cost an additional
$20,000.
“When we started
going down this track
it was nearly two years
ago and at that point, we
didn’t know if the road
was going to reopen.”
Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board member and city councillor
Sara Templeton supported the
installation of security cameras.
“I know that this is a real issue
in the area with a range of burglaries
and incidents with cars,
trailers and boats.”
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member
Darrell Latham said the cameras
would only be part of the solution.
“From my perspective, the
cameras must be complemented
by a sufficient level of monitoring
from a credible organisation, that
is the New Zealand Police.”
