The Goombungee Golf Club has been successful in
having a watering system installed, using water from
a dam on Little Gomoren Creek which previously
supplied water to the town before being connected to
the Toowoomba water system.
President of the Goombungee Golf Club John Harth
led the project.
Mayor Paul Antonio, when opening the new system,
referred to John’s determination in overcoming
obstacles to achieve what the club wanted.
Cr Antonio thanked John Harth for his persistence
that led to the installation of the system.
Aldi opposition dropped
Developer and surveyor Stephen Bowers has
dropped his action against a planning application for
an Aldi store at Highfields.
Mr Bowers, a principal of the Avenues of
Highfields development, said the construction of an
Aldi store on Highfields Road near Mary MacKillop
College would put a lot of pressure on traffic flow.
There is to be a roundabout on Highfields Road near
the intersection of Lauder Drive which runs between
the Highfields Tavern and the fast food stores.
This is also near the Mary MacKillop access to
Highfields Road.
Mr Bowers thought traffic could become
Cr Antonio said sporting clubs were a significant part
of a community, and the golf club was special to the
Goombungee community.
The Mayor said he hoped that predicted rain from excyclone
Owen would fill the dam which was at a low
level from drought conditions.
The Goombungee dam is located just to the east of
the golf course. A solar powered submersible pump was
installed at the dam, pumping into two 5000 gl tanks on
the course. Water for the greens and other parts of the
course is pumped from these tanks.
The State Government’s gaming benefit fund
provided almost $35,000 for the project
particularly congested during school drop down and
pick up times.
He thought that some students meet their parents
at the shopping centre and needed to cross Highfields
Road during these times.
He thought a more appropriate location for the Aldi
store would be on the Toowoomba Council’s 19ha
site on O’Brien Road, where a town centre is to be
developed.
He had hoped that Aldi might rethink the decision,
but Mr Bowers said he was just one person and
decided to drop the action.
