16 | December 27, 2018 | The orland park prairie dining out opprairie.com The Dish Lou Malnati’s in Tinley Park expands to full-service restaurant Jacquelyn Schlabach Contributing Editor Not long after opening the Lou Malnati’s carryout and delivery store in Tinley Park in 2009, owner Marc Malnati saw an opportunity to expand and offer a full-service restaurant to his loyal customers. His vision finally came to fruition Dec. 3, when after nearly four months of construction Lou Malnati’s re-opened to the community with more food options and dining space at the famous Chicago pizzeria franchise. The establishment, best known for its deep dish pizza, now offers more menu options at its Tinley Park location, in addition to the 250 seats that were added for dining. “Our carryouts have a way more simplified menu, so Tinley Park is getting to see a whole bunch of items that they haven’t experienced before,” Malnati said. In addition to the already existing menu items — including customer favorites such as The Malnati Chicago classic, the “Lou” and the cheese deep dish pizzas — there are three new pastas, two new desserts, three sandwiches and a salad. “We try to do things so that it’s a homemade, fresh menu,” Malnati said. “You can’t have too many items and be able to keep those standards.” Some of the new menu items featured are the chicken BBQ club salad, which is now offered in two sizes, has romaine lettuce, grilled chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, shredded mozzarella, cheddar and Volpi salami bits, served with the restaurant’s club dressing and tortilla chips. The chicken Louie pasta ($10.25) has tender pieces of chicken, fettuccine and cream sauce baked with mozzarella. And the beef sandwich ($8.95) — which has tender beef smothered with melted mozzarella, served with a choice of fries or fresh fruit and cottage cheese — is also now available. Those familiar with the Chicago staple have become accustomed to the deep dish and thin crust pizzas that draw customers there in the first place. Guests also can customize their own pizza, adding as many or as few toppings as they want. “[My dad] was very instrumental in making Chicago pizza what it would become,” Malnati said. “He was a guy who like to fiddle around in the kitchen.” His father and founder of the restaurant, Lou, died from cancer in 1978, and Marc has taken the reigns on the company ever since. Lou Malnati’s now has 53 Chicago-area locations and three in Arizona. Tinley Park is the 31st store to open, and the only one in the history of the company to be converted from a carryout and delivery store to a full-dining restaurant. “What I’ve loved is that our regular carryout customers who have been coming here for almost 10 years are all saying, ‘Hey, can I go see [the restaurant]?’ and so we had somebody set up, just touring people, like walking them through the door and taking them around the restaurant,” Malnati said. “[They say], ‘Oh I can’t wait to bring my family in here.’” The location still offers its carryout and delivery options, which are now attached and just a doorway away from the seating area. There also is a bar where customers waiting to be seated or waiting for their carryout order can sit. The “Lou” pizza is one of Lou Malnati’s most popular pizzas, which has spinach mix, garlic, basil, onion, mushroom and sliced Roma tomato, with three cheeses on the restaurant’s Buttercrust.
