Robert Pecoraro, of Cottleville, received the 2018 Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award from the National Association of Interpretation [NAI] at the group’s national workshop on Nov. 30 in New Orleans. Pecoraro is only the 12th person to be honored with this prestigious award. He also received the NAI’s Region 6 2017 Outstanding Interpretive Volunteer Award last year along with fellow parks volunteer Col. Barney Combs. The Outstanding Volunteer Interpreter Award is presented to an NAI member who has worked five or more years as a volunteer interpreter, whose educational background is not in interpretation, and whose current volunteer duties are in front-line interpretation or administration of an interpretive program. They must demonstrate a mastery of interpretive techniques and program development, and must demonstrate initiative and a dedication to the affiliated institution. For more than 30 years, Pecoraro, a certified interpretive guide, has been an active volunteer. He has donated thousands of hours of service as an advocate for historic and cultural preservation at The Historic Daniel Boone Home near Defiance. As a volunteer, he brings the legacy of Daniel Boone to life by bridging the past to the future through first-person interpretation of John Filson. Filson was Boone’s biographer, a Revolutionary War veteran, surveyor, and the first official historian for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Robert Pecoraro [center] with his NAI award Earlier this year, Pecoraro and Combs were recognized for their work with a proclamation by the Governor of Missouri, and in 2017 both received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Parks Department. O’FALLON Interim police chief named Mayor Bill Hennessy and the O’Fallon City Council have announced the hiring of Gary D. George as the Interim Police Chief for the O’Fallon Police Department. George George, who comes to O’Fallon through a contract with Strategic Government Resources [SGR], will serve in the role until a permanent chief is hired in early 2019. SGR is assisting the city in finding a permanent replacement for Chief Roy Joachimstaler, who retired on Dec. 7 after nine years with the city and nearly 50 years in law enforcement. George brings an extensive background to O’Fallon, having more than 47 years of experience in police work, including nearly 20 years as a police chief and director of public safety. His career began in Independence, Missouri, where he started as a patrol officer in 1970. He worked his way through the ranks and was named chief of police in 1997. He left Independence in 2001, taking over the position of chief of police for the community of Alpharetta, Georgia. In 2006, George was promoted to the position of Director of Public Safety for Alpharetta, where he oversaw police, fire and emergency services for the community. He retired from Alpharetta in 2017. “We appreciate Chief George stepping in to assist our community as we continue our national search for our new police chief,” Hennessy said. “I am confident that he, along with our talented group of officers, civilians and the existing leadership team, will continue to exceed the high standards our department has set for service, public safety and overall excellence in police work.” ST. PETERS Blues Special Hockey exhibition game The St. Peters Hockey Club and CarShield AAA Hockey hosts the Blues Special Hockey team in an exhibition game at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the St. Peters RecPlex - South Rink A. The Blues Special Hockey Team is a team of developmentally challenged kids and adults that share the love of the sport of hockey. Admission is $5 for adults; kids are free. A Ryan O’Reilly autographed jersey will be offered as an attendance prize. Raffle tickets also will be available with all proceeds going directly to the Blues Special Hockey organization, a not-for-profit 501[c][3] organization. ST. Previous teams included the River- City Raiders, St. Louis Attack, River City Rage, River City Renegades, St. Louis Stampede and Missouri Monsters. Now, there is a new St. Louis Stampede, which is set to kick-off its inaugural season at The Family Arena in St. Charles on Saturday, April 6. The new team is part of the National Gridiron League [NGL] that plays in 12 U.S. metropolitan areas through the country. The league was founded in 2017 as a minor league alternative to the National Football League and owns all 12 teams. So it is not “owner franchised,” said Stampede President Kallie C. Klein. She said the league’s ownership is backed by a group of investors in Jacksonville, Florida, and that the NGL offers more stability that may add to the longevity of the league. Klein, along with head coach Patrick Pimmel, St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith, County Finance Director Bob Schnur and other team officials and players, talked about the new team at a press conference on Dec. 13 at The Family Arena, a 9,755- seat arena that the team is hoping to fill. Pimmel brings more than 30 years of football to the Stampede’s inaugural season. In 2015, he came in at mid-season to become head coach of the St. Louis Attack. He also spent a season as the offensive coordinator of the Orlando Predators. In 2012, he was the head coach of the Indoor Football League’s Allen Wranglers. He also was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Nebraska Danger and, in 2010, he served as head coach for the Omaha Beef. In 2009, he was the head coach of the River City Rage, which won a conference championship and was the United Bowl runner-up. Pimmel said he would like to use younger players for the Stampede, many just out of college. That also may include some players who recently graduated high school. A tryout is being held from 7-11 a.m. on Jan. 12 at Olympia Athletic and Events Centre, 49 Lawrence Street in St. Charles. Details are available online at stlstampede.com. County Parks to offer Winter Trails Day The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department hosts its Winter Trails Day event at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Shelter #7 in Broemmelsiek Park, 1795 Hwy. DD near Defiance. Depending on the weather, participants will be able to hike, cross-country ski or snowshoe alongside park staff on a short, guided tour through the park. After the tour, participants can warm up with hot chocolate under the pavilion and enter to win a park camping certificate.
